- Raw material selection. The production process begins with the rigorous selection of premium and prime-grade boards. This stage defines the quality of the future product, as timber characteristics directly affect the aesthetics and performance of the lamella.
- Kiln drying. Selected raw materials undergo drying in specialised kilns. This technology allows for the achievement of an optimal joinery moisture content (MC) level (8–10%), which is essential for material stability. Correct drying reduces internal stresses and prevents deformation or cracking.
- Calibration. Before sawing, the boards are calibrated to dimensions that match the parameters of the saw frame. This approach ensures high precision in subsequent processing and optimal material yield.
- Sawing. Prepared blanks are fed into a Wintersteiger machine. After setting the thickness and other parameters, the timber is resawn into sheets. The use of high-precision equipment guarantees consistent saw-cut quality.
- Quality control (QC) and grading. The finished sawn veneer is inspected for compliance with dimensions, thickness, and grade. After grading, the lamellas are grouped into bundles, which are then packed onto pallets for transport.
Linden Timber: Technical Characteristics and Properties
Linden (Tilia), also known as Lime or Basswood in international markets, is a low-density hardwood species that occupies a specific niche in the woodworking industry. Due to its combination of low density, high toughness, and the absence of resins, linden is considered the optimal material for artistic hand-carving and the interior cladding of steam rooms and saunas.
The species is widespread across the temperate zones of Europe, Western Siberia, and East Asia. In Ukraine, linden is prevalent nationwide, but the largest commercial timber stands are concentrated in the forest-steppe and Polissya regions. For professional woodworking, timber harvested from trees aged 60–80 years grown in shaded, high-density forest stands is considered of the highest quality.
The primary physical and mechanical advantage of solid linden is its exceptional dimensional stability after drying and high resistance to warping or cracking. Its Brinell hardness is approximately 1.5 HB, and its density typically ranges from 450 to 530 kg/m³. Its steam-bending capacity is rated as high, while its thermal conductivity remains remarkably low.
Linden is a sapwood-dominant, diffuse-porous species (non-heartwood). The timber features a light, nearly white color, occasionally exhibiting a subtle yellowish or pinkish undertone. Notably, the wood is resistant to photo-oxidation; it does not darken significantly under UV exposure but rather develops a refined matte finish. The texture is fine and uniform. Pores and annual growth rings are virtually invisible on longitudinal surfaces, creating a homogeneous, monolithic visual effect. The grain is fine and predominantly straight.
Linden timber is recognized as the «gold standard» for woodcarvers. The solid wood exhibits excellent machining properties, allowing it to be cut with equal ease both with and across the grain. The material retains the most intricate reliefs and sharpest corners without splintering. Machining linden requires high-precision, sharp tooling: dull blades may crush the wood fibers instead of severing them. The wood sands and polishes to a superior finish. As a resin-free species with low thermal conductivity, linden cladding and sauna benches do not emit organic volatiles when heated to +100°C and maintain a safe surface temperature for skin contact.
