What exactly is a sawn veneer grade? A grade is a standardised quality indicator that dictates the aesthetic and physical properties of the lamella sheet. This classification relies on the presence, quantity, and size of natural wood characteristics.

These characteristics include knots, cracks, sapwood, colour variations, and grain anomalies. The chosen grade directly impacts the material’s application, its decorative value, and the final cost of the product.

Applications of Sawn Linden Veneer (Lamella)

Thanks to its light hue, uniform texture, and eco-friendly nature, sawn linden veneer has a broad spectrum of uses in joinery and furniture making. However, an important operational feature must be considered: linden is a soft wood species.

This factor determines how the timber should be used in structures subjected to physical stress. Here are the most common applications:

• Furniture fronts. This is one of the most popular uses for linden lamella. The material is lightweight, which reduces strain on hinges and fittings. Lacking prominent pores, linden provides an optimal base for any finish, from translucent stains to opaque paint.
• Internal doors. Using 2.5–4.5 mm thick sawn veneer for facing door leaves creates doors visually identical to solid wood. Crucially, they are significantly lighter and more resistant to humidity changes, meaning they will not dry out or warp.
• Wall panels. Linden lamella is widely used for crafting wall panels and boiserie. The light timber with its even texture perfectly suits minimalist, Scandinavian, and eco-friendly styles.

• Worktops and surfaces. Because linden is prone to denting under heavy impact, lamella should be used cautiously for worktops. For kitchen surfaces, linden lamella must be combined with ultra-durable protective coatings, such as epoxy resin or specialised polyurethane varnishes.

• Calibration. The next step involves adjusting the dimensions of the timber blanks. The solid wood is planed so that the timber block dimensions perfectly match the saw cassette parameters.
• Sawing process. The prepared timber blocks are fed into a Wintersteiger machine. Using industrial equipment ensures precise geometry for every sheet and significantly reduces waste.
• Quality control and packaging. In the final stage, the resulting products are checked for accurate thickness and grade. The sorted veneer sheets are then carefully bundled into packs for safe transport.

Linden Wood: A Brief Overview

Linden (Tilia) is a broadleaf species renowned for its combination of low weight, toughness, and excellent workability. The tree is a typical feature of temperate forests in the Northern Hemisphere.

For the Ukrainian woodworking industry, small-leaved linden (Tilia cordata) and common linden (Tilia europaea) are the most frequently harvested species.

The timber displays a uniform light shade, ranging from practically white and cream to a pale yellow. The sapwood and heartwood are visually indistinguishable. Upon exposure to sunlight, the solid wood gradually darkens, acquiring a warm golden-brown undertone.

The texture is fine and incredibly uniform. Annual rings are very faintly pronounced and barely visible on radial and tangential cuts. The wood fibres are predominantly straight, with small, evenly distributed pores.

There is a natural matte lustre that intensifies beautifully after polishing.

Linden belongs to the softwood category. Its density ranges from 530 to 560 kg/m³, and its Brinell hardness is 1.5. Linden is sensitive to pinpoint mechanical impacts; heavy pressure can leave noticeable dents.

Without specialist coatings, the solid wood is unsuitable for surfaces facing high abrasive wear. Despite its softness, the timber boasts exceptional impact toughness. The wood does not crumble, split, or crack when driving nails or fitting screws near the edges.

Its bending capacity is moderate. However, after steaming, linden becomes highly plastic, allowing for the creation of complex, curved structural elements.

The material cuts effortlessly in all directions, both along and across the grain. This makes linden the premier choice for intricate artistic carving. It also features excellent adhesion with all types of industrial joinery adhesives, including PVA and PUR.

Linden is incredibly easy to stain, mimicking more expensive exotic woods like walnut or mahogany. The pigment applies evenly, completely avoiding the formation of dark patches or streaks.
