Veneer tape is a thin gummed strip of rubberised paper made for joining veneer. It does not damage the timber, because it contains no acids. One of the jobs of the rubberised strip is to protect the edges of the veneer and stop the leaves from cracking.
The main features of tape for joining veneer are:
- Versatility. The gummed strip is used on all types of veneer. You can choose white or brown tape, perforated or plain, as the job requires.
- Environmental credentials. Veneer tape is made to international standards and is harmless to people and animals.
- Ease of use. Veneer tape is all but invisible on the joints and sands away readily.

Veneer tape: what is it?
Veneer tape is the name for a thin strip of strong rubberised paper with adhesive on one side. The material is used to join veneer. It is important to understand that veneer tape does not replace splicing thread. The leaves are spliced with heated glass-fibre thread, and the tape is then laid over the joint. The tape is needed because the thread may melt, and that can damage the veneer. It is also sometimes said that veneer tape can be replaced with masking tape. The two materials are meant for different jobs. Using masking tape to hold veneer leaves can damage the sheet.
Properties of veneer tape
Paper tape for veneer has the following qualities:
- low cost. An inexpensive consumable makes the work easier and helps craftsmen handle a range of jobs;
- versatility. The gummed strip is offered in white and brown. You can pick a tape that will not show on the timber;
- environmental safety. The material is made to international environmental standards, gives off no toxic substances and is harmless to people and animals.
Gummed tape has one further job: protecting the edges of the veneer. The strip of rubberised paper stops the leaves cracking and delaminating. Thin tape for veneering MDF or particle board is barely visible, easy to work with and sands away readily. Veneer tape makes it possible to do good veneering work with joints that are all but invisible.
Types of veneer tape
The Woodway Expert catalogue holds consumables that differ in the parameters set out in the table.
| Perforation | Perforated tape is used when laying up faces from thin, light and delicate veneer. Through the holes the craftsman can see the seam and correct how the leaves meet. For joining thicker veneer, plain tape is the answer. That material is stiffer and holds the edges better. |
|---|---|
| Colour | Tape for veneer splicing is available in white and brown. The shade is chosen to match the colour of the timber. The right consumable helps to make a neat job of facing MDF, particle board or plywood. |
| Sizes | Gummed tape for joining veneer is offered in widths of 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm. A standard roll holds around 200 running metres. |
Joining veneer with gummed tape: step by step
To splice veneer you will need veneer tape, water, a sponge, a spatula and scissors.
- First cut the paper tape into short pieces around 5 cm long.
- Dampen the pieces with water and leave them for a while so that the material dries off a little and becomes tacky. It is important not to let the tape dry out completely.
- Lay the prepared tape over the seam and run the spatula along it. As it dries, the consumable shrinks, which draws the edges together and presses them against each other.
There is another way of splicing veneer with paper tape: the tape is laid onto leaves that are still damp. In that case the tape shrinks together with the veneer. If the craftsman spots a mistake or a flaw, the material can easily be lifted off at any moment.
