Birch Planks: Stock Availability

Edged Birch Planks are characterised by processed side edges. The bark is cut off completely or almost completely. According to technical documentation, a minor amount of wane is permitted on edged timber products.

Dry birch boards without bark are ready for joinery work. They are suitable for manufacturing interior items.

Unedged Birch Planks are more affordable as they undergo fewer processing stages. Bark remains on the edges of the boards.

Timber with bark is actively used in carpentry but requires preliminary preparation. For certain rustic products, such as “live edge” worktops, partitions, or wall panels, boards with bark are specifically utilised.

Grades of Birch Joinery Timber

Birch is a valuable material for the furniture industry due to its uniform structure and viscosity. When choosing timber grades, we follow a clear quality gradation. This defines the appearance of the workpiece but not its mechanical strength.

Unlike oak, Grade 2 birch is rarely used for decorative purposes. The main value of such timber is its strength.

Birch of any grade holds fasteners (staples, self-tapping screws) excellently. Therefore, Grade 2 is the standard for internal frames of sofas and armchairs.

How to Calculate the Cubic Volume of a Birch Board Before Purchasing?

Solid wood is measured in cubic metres, and consequently, the price is indicated per m³. How do you find out how many cubic metres are in a single birch board?

For calculations, use the volume formula: V = a × b × c, where ‘a’ is length, ‘b’ is width, and ‘c’ is thickness.

For clarity, let us calculate the cubic volume of a board 40 mm thick, 1.9 m long, and 25 cm wide. Convert all values to metres, substitute into the formula, and obtain: 1.9 × 0.25 × 0.04 m = 0.019 m³.

The volume of boards of other sizes is calculated similarly.

How Many Birch Boards are in 1 Cubic Metre?

To find out the number of boards in one cubic metre, use the formula: N = 1 ÷ V, where ‘N’ is the number of pieces, and ‘V’ is the cubic volume of a specific board. The board volume is determined using the formula from the previous section.

For example, let us consider two boards. Parameters of the first: thickness 35 mm (0.035 m), width 28 cm (0.28 m), length 2.3 m. Parameters of the second: thickness 50 mm (0.05 m), width 25 cm (0.25 m), length 2.1 m.

Let us determine the cubic volume of these boards and how many fit into 1 cubic metre.

The volume of the first board is: 0.035 × 0.28 × 2.3 = 0.023 m³. Now, calculate how many boards are in a cube: 1 ÷ 0.023 ≈ 43 pieces.

Determine the cubic volume of the second board: 0.05 × 0.25 × 2.1 = 0.026 m³. Boards fitting in a cube: 1 ÷ 0.026 ≈ 38 pieces.

How to Calculate the Price of a Birch Board?

To find out the cost of timber, the price per cubic metre must be multiplied by the volume of the board. We have already clarified how timber volume is calculated.

Let us look at specific examples for edged and unedged birch boards to determine their cost.

Example 1. Edged birch board sized 30×300×4000 mm, Grade 1. The price per cubic metre is, let’s assume, €699. First, we determine the cubic volume, then the cost. 0.03 × 0.3 × 4 = 0.036 m³. 699 × 0.036 = €25.16.

Example 2. Unedged birch board, Extra grade, sized 40×250×2800 mm. The price per cubic metre is, for example, €599. 0.04 × 0.25 × 2.8 = 0.028 m³. 599 × 0.028 = €16.77.

Uses of Birch Joinery Boards

Unedged and edged birch boards are widely applied in the production of interior items, musical instruments, and household goods. Our customers manufacture the following products from this timber:

• Furniture. Facades and frame elements for wardrobes, cabinets, and chests of drawers made from solid birch withstand operational loads and serve for decades. Birch is used to create worktops, bed headboards, chair backs, and armrests for sofas and armchairs. The wood is easily toned and varnished, so stylisation causes no difficulties. Birch furniture perfectly complements bedrooms, living rooms, studies, hotel rooms, conference halls, cafes, and shops.
• Partitions. Diverse non-capital constructions for zoning space are produced from this affordable timber. Interior walls and partitions made of birch are used in flats, country houses, townhouses, and hotels. Mobile screens and dividers are popular in offices, restaurants, trading halls, and galleries.
• Floor Coverings. Birch floorboards are simple to lay and serve for a long time with proper treatment. Parquet boards, podiums, and decking are produced from the solid wood.

Properties of Birch Wood

Solid Birch (Betula) has a range of characteristics that make this material popular amongst joiners. The wood has a medium density of 600–700 kg/m³, and Brinell hardness is 3.5.

Birch withstands mechanical loads well and is easily processed: it can be sawn, planed, and sanded. It holds glue well, accepts stain, paint, and varnish, and is suitable for carving.

The colour of the wood is whitish or creamy, often with a golden tint. The texture is uniform with a delicate pattern.

Birch solid wood is quite flexible, making it suitable for the production of plywood and bent elements. Birch timber is used for structures that are not subjected to intensive loads.
