- Raw material selection. The production process begins with the rigorous selection of premium and prime-grade boards. This stage defines the quality of the future product, as timber characteristics directly affect the aesthetics and performance of the lamella.
- Kiln drying. Selected raw materials undergo drying in specialised kilns. This technology allows for the achievement of an optimal joinery moisture content (MC) level (8–10%), which is essential for material stability. Correct drying reduces internal stresses and prevents deformation or cracking.
- Calibration. Before sawing, the boards are calibrated to dimensions that match the parameters of the saw frame. This approach ensures high precision in subsequent processing and optimal material yield.
- Sawing. Prepared blanks are fed into a Wintersteiger machine. After setting the thickness and other parameters, the timber is resawn into sheets. The use of high-precision equipment guarantees consistent saw-cut quality.
- Quality control (QC) and grading. The finished sawn veneer is inspected for compliance with dimensions, thickness, and grade. After grading, the lamellas are grouped into bundles, which are then packed onto pallets for transport.
American Walnut Timber: Overview of Characteristics
Black American Walnut (Juglans nigra) is one of the most valuable temperate hardwood species globally. It is a premium-grade material that combines superior mechanical properties with high decorative appeal. The natural range of Juglans nigra spans Eastern North America, from Southern Canada to the Gulf Coast. The finest industrial-grade specimens are sourced from the US Central Plains (Iowa, Ohio, Indiana), where the specific climate ensures uniform density and rich, deep coloration.
American Walnut is classified as a medium-density wood with moderate hardness and high shock resistance. Technical specifications include a density of 610–660 kg/m³ and a Brinell hardness rating of 5. The lumber responds exceptionally well to steaming, making it a preferred choice for the production of bentwood components. In its solid form, the wood possesses moderate stiffness and excellent shock-absorption properties.
The heartwood color ranges from golden-brown to dark chocolate with distinct purple or grayish undertones. The sapwood is characteristically narrow and creamy-white, often requiring professional grading to meet specific aesthetic requirements. The grain is predominantly straight, though wavy, curly, and figured patterns occur naturally and are highly prized for high-end veneer production. Pores are medium-sized and clearly visible on longitudinal surfaces as fine, elegant grooves.
American Walnut demonstrates some of the best dimensional stability ratings among commercial hardwoods. The volumetric shrinkage coefficient is approximately 10.2%, significantly minimizing the risk of warping or deformation during fluctuations in relative humidity. The wood is easy to saw, mill, and sand to a high-quality finish. It is essential to use sharp, carbide-tipped tooling to prevent «tear-out» or chipping in areas with interlocked grain. It glues reliably and accepts all types of industrial finishes. Applying natural oils or waxes enhances the grain definition without altering the timber’s authentic color profile.
