Sawn poplar burr veneer 4.5 mm, 0.5–3 m

On request

Poplar burl sawn veneer (lamellas) 4.5 mm thick offers exceptional aesthetic value. These sawn lamellas can be repeatedly surface sanded (refinished) and finished with oils or lacquers. The material is used to create bespoke solid worktops, interior doors, wall panelling, and accent feature panels. Order sawn lamellas starting from 1 pack. Remote selection of facing materials is available tailored to customer specifications. We ship across Ukraine via freight carriers, with warehouse pickup available in Kyiv.

Key Features of Poplar Burl Sawn Veneer (Lamella)

  1. Structural integrity. Due to the sawing technology, the timber maintains a stable structure and fibre integrity, ensuring high surface quality.
  2. Natural colour palette. The production process for lamellas does not require preliminary steaming. This preserves the natural wood shades without unwanted yellow or red tints, which is critical for design projects.
  3. Durability and restoration. With thicknesses ranging from 2 mm to 10 mm, lamella products can be sanded and refinished multiple times (similar to solid wood boards). This makes the material ideal for high-traffic flooring, stairs, and furniture.
  4. Stability. Sawn veneer demonstrates high resistance to fluctuations in humidity and temperature. The risk of deformation in products veneered with these sheets is minimal.
  5. Workability. The smooth and clean surface after sawing ensures excellent adhesion with all types of adhesives (PVA, PU, resins). Veneer sheets are easy to cut, sand, stain, and varnish.

Custom Poplar Burl Sawn Lamella

We stock Acacia sawn veneer in thicknesses of 2.5 mm and 4.5 mm, lengths of 2–3.2 m, and widths of 10–21 cm.

Made-to-order options:

  • Thickness: Non-standard sizes from 2 mm to 10 mm.
  • Dimensions: Custom widths and lengths available upon request.
  • Minimum order quantity (MOQ): From 10 m² per species.
  • Lead time: 10 working days.

TIP. Always order sawn lamellas with a 10–15% surface area allowance. Extra material is essential for grain matching and figure alignment, as well as for end trimming and cross-cutting.

Poplar Burl Sawn Veneer Grades

For facing materials, the grade indicates aesthetic characteristics rather than technical quality. Since lamella is used as a face layer, its classification is based on visual parameters: the presence of knots, sapwood, medullary rays, and colour uniformity.

All grades in our range undergo the same kiln-drying cycle to a moisture content (MC) of 8–10% and precision thickness sanding. The choice of grade depends solely on the intended style of the finished product.

Grade Characteristics
A (Select / Prime)

This is the highest grade of material, intended for the face elements of premium furniture.

  • The surface is 85–100% covered with burl clusters. The figure is uniform, with «eyes» densely packed to create a continuous texture effect.
  • The colour is consistent (ranging from cream to golden). The material is free from sapwood, mineral streaks, or signs of fungal blue stain.
  • Technical cracks, unsound knots, or pith are not permitted.
  • Instrument panels, marquetry, and furniture fronts for exclusive collections.
B (Natural)

This grade demonstrates the natural structural diversity of solid wood.

  • Burl clusters cover between 50% and 80% of the surface area. The remainder of the surface features a «curly» figure (interlocking grain) with a characteristic silky lustre.
  • Natural colour transitions and a limited amount of light sapwood are permitted. Occasional closed, surface checks (non-through) and small black dots (pin knots) are allowed, provided they do not compromise the structural integrity of the sheet.
  • Cabinet furniture, decorative wall panels, and interior decor.
C (Rustic / Country)

Material with an emphasis on wood authenticity.

  • Suitable for projects where natural characteristics are integrated into the design. Burl clusters are localized or scattered, occupying less than 50% of the surface area. Standard poplar grain pattern predominates.
  • Distinct colour contrasts are present; natural dark mineral streaks (without loss of wood density) and sapwood are permitted.
  • Loft, country, and eclectic style products, as well as decorative items requiring maximum textural contrast.

Where is Poplar Burl Sawn Veneer Used?

Worktops — Burr Poplar Sawn Veneer

Worktops

Sawn veneer sheets are a durable material used for desks, coffee tables, and side tables, as well as bar counters, shop counters, reception desks, and kitchen islands.

Furniture facades — Burr Poplar Sawn Veneer

Furniture Fronts

Sawn lamella allows for the creation of unique custom cabinetry. Due to its sufficient thickness, veneered fronts can be milled or wire-brushed. Additionally, lamellas are used to create louvred fronts for wardrobes and other storage areas. Timber-faced doors for cabinets, chests of drawers, and sideboards are essential elements for bespoke design projects.

Wall panels — Burr Poplar Sawn Veneer

Wall Panels

Interior timber panels are not only wall or ceiling finishes but also an opportunity to enhance local lighting. LED-backlit panels are popular for living rooms and bedrooms. Veneered wall panels are also used for the interior fit-out of cafes, restaurants, retail spaces, and offices.

Interior decor — Burr Poplar Sawn Veneer

Interior Decor

Timber lamellas are used to manufacture various decorative products. The material is easy to cut, glue, paint, varnish, and stain. Sawn lamella is used to create toys, puzzles, coasters, napkin holders, boxes, phone holders, decorative panels, stationery organisers, cosmetic stands, wall clocks, and more.

Poplar Burl Sawn Lamella Production Technology

  • Raw material selection. The production process begins with the rigorous selection of premium and prime-grade boards. This stage defines the quality of the future product, as timber characteristics directly affect the aesthetics and performance of the lamella.
  • Kiln drying. Selected raw materials undergo drying in specialised kilns. This technology allows for the achievement of an optimal joinery moisture content (MC) level (8–10%), which is essential for material stability. Correct drying reduces internal stresses and prevents deformation or cracking.
  • Calibration. Before sawing, the boards are calibrated to dimensions that match the parameters of the saw frame. This approach ensures high precision in subsequent processing and optimal material yield.
  • Sawing. Prepared blanks are fed into a Wintersteiger machine. After setting the thickness and other parameters, the timber is resawn into sheets. The use of high-precision equipment guarantees consistent saw-cut quality.
  • Quality control (QC) and grading. The finished sawn veneer is inspected for compliance with dimensions, thickness, and grade. After grading, the lamellas are grouped into bundles, which are then packed onto pallets for transport.

Poplar Burl Timber: Technical Properties

Poplar burl (Populus nigra) is an exclusive decorative material formed as a result of abnormal growth in tree tissues (burls). Black poplar, which most frequently produces burls, is widespread across Europe, Central Asia, and North Africa. In Ukraine, the tree grows in river valleys, on floodplains, and in forest-steppe zones. Burl formations occur rarely, making every log a unique and scarce resource.

Poplar burl is a soft and lightweight material with a non-homogeneous structure. The physical and mechanical properties of the burl differ from standard poplar timber due to the chaotic arrangement of fibres. Density typically varies between 400 – 500 kg/m³, while hardness on the Brinell scale is 1.4 – 1.8 HB (though burl clusters are significantly harder). Due to the chaotically interlocking grain, its bending capacity is low. Products made from poplar burl require a protective coating of hard lacquer or a multi-layer oil finish to mitigate mechanical damage.

The background colour varies from creamy white to light yellow. Burl clusters («eyes») feature rich chocolate, dark brown, black, and reddish-brown tones. The figure is complex and curly. Fibres are intertwined, twisted into spirals and pin knots. Pores are diffuse-porous and small. The timber exhibits a characteristic silky lustre on the transverse and longitudinal sections.

Due to its low density and hardness, poplar demonstrates excellent machinability. To avoid grain tearing, sharp tools should be used at high speeds. Since voids and natural pockets are often found within the burl, the material is well-suited for combination with epoxy resins. It accepts hard wax oils exceptionally well, which «pop» (reveal) the depth of the figure. Water-based stains may cause blotching due to the varying absorption capacities of the earlywood and latewood areas within the burl.

Poplar burl is a decorative surfacing material for exclusive design. The primary advantage of this species lies not in its structural strength, but in its unique aesthetic appeal.
