Unedged hornbeam timber of grade 1 with a thickness of 32 mm and 52 mm is an ultra-hard kiln-dried (KD) sawn timber product with a moisture content (MC) of 8–10%. Minor colour transitions and solitary intergrown sound knots are permitted. Grade 1 boards maintain high mechanical strength and wear resistance while showcasing the natural grain texture of the wood. Available for self-collection from the warehouse and shipping across Ukraine.

Characteristics of Extra Grade Unedged Hornbeam Board

Board grade is a classification of timber based on the natural characteristics of the wood. This includes the number and type of knots, presence of cracks or sapwood, and uniformity of texture and colour.

The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than its basic physical-mechanical properties. Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the strength of the board.

Features of Extra (Prime) Grade boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and homogenous colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour variations are not permitted.
  • This is material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Unedged Hornbeam Board

The concept of wood grading is based on classifying sawn timber by its visual characteristics. It takes into account the number and classifications of knots, the potential presence of checks, shakes, and sapwood, as well as the uniformity of the grain pattern and color shade. The main point to remember is that the grade primarily determines the aesthetic appearance rather than the structural reliability of the material. If boards of the same species have undergone proper kiln drying (KD), the mechanical strength of the sawn timber will be virtually identical, regardless of its grade.

Features of Grade 1 boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery works: a surface practically without distinct features, but at a more accessible price.
  • Occasional live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • The optimal choice for worktops, staircases, parquet, and cabinet furniture, where the natural pattern of the wood is appreciated.

Advantages of Unedged Hornbeam Board

  1. Maximum Economic Benefit. This is the most affordable type of timber. The cost per cubic metre of unedged board is significantly lower than that of edged timber. This is because the price does not include the costs of edging and production waste percentages. It is the optimal choice for those who possess machinery for self-cutting or are seeking a budget-friendly solution.
  2. Unique “Live Edge” Aesthetics. In joinery, a waney edge is not a defect but an aesthetic feature. Preserving the natural contour of the trunk allows for the creation of exclusive furniture in loft, eco, rustic, and country styles. It is precisely from such boards that popular river tables with epoxy resin, bespoke window sills, breakfast bars, and headboards are crafted.
  3. Freedom of Cutting. When working with edged boards, a craftsman is limited by the strict geometry of the timber. Unedged Hornbeam board offers freedom: you decide how to navigate around a knot or crack. This is particularly valuable when manufacturing curved components (such as chair legs or decorative elements), as it allows you to extract more useful raw material from the board.
  4. Versatility of Application. Depending on the species and grade, this material covers a wide range of tasks. These range from construction (formwork, scaffolding) to high-end design projects (worktops with a live edge, non-standard window sills).

Unedged Hornbeam Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality unedged boards produced from selected and correctly dried timber. The timber is stored in appropriate conditions. Our warehouse stocks solid boards in the following dimensions:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm;
  • Width: From 20 cm;
  • Length: 1–4.5 m.

Boards exceeding 3 metres in length incur a +20% surcharge on the price listed in the price list. Our specialists will assist you in selecting quality material for your project of any complexity and scale. An additional rough cutting service is available for more convenient transport.

Features of Kiln Dried Hornbeam Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, the moisture content of the wood is brought to an average of 8–10%. This is the optimal figure for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses in the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing: the risk of warping, twisting, or the formation of shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over time under stable operating conditions.
  • Biological Purity of the Material. The temperature regimes of kiln drying inhibit the development of mould and fungi. They also destroy the majority of pest larvae, particularly woodworm. As a result, the timber enters production in a biologically safe state, which is particularly important for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of Mechanical and Finish Processing. Dry timber has a stable structure, which directly influences the processing result. During milling and sawing, tools work more cleanly, and the edge emerges smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “raise”, and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate the pores better and deeper, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Areas of Application for Unedged Hornbeam Board

Hornbeam Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing hard-wearing worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid board is also used for the production of tops for bar counters, reception desks, shop counters, kitchen islands, and work surfaces.

Hornbeam Furniture Facades

Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor or wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such items are used to furnish residential and public premises, including offices. Furniture facades made from hardwood species withstand elevated operational loads, which is crucial for spaces with high footfall.

Hornbeam Flooring

Dry solid board is used for the production of various floor coverings. Timber can be applied as the top layer of parquet and engineered boards. Furthermore, tongue-and-groove floorboards are manufactured from natural wood for interior installation.

Internal Hornbeam Staircases

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Correctly treated timber resists abrasive wear and scuffing in zones of the most intense traffic. Solid wood is subject to repeated scraping and refinishing, which extends the service life of wooden staircases.

Decorative Elements from Hornbeam Timber

The unique texture and inimitable pattern of growth rings make every item an exclusive design object. This applies whether it is a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder. The ability of the wood to easily undergo various types of finish processing (tinting, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to be integrated into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Hornbeam Timber: Key Characteristics

Specialists identify 41 species of Hornbeam (Carpinus), a deciduous tree found across Europe, North America, and Asia. In Ukraine, two varieties are common: common hornbeam, reaching 25–30 m in height, and oriental hornbeam, which grows to 5–8 m.

Transverse and longitudinal sections of the solid wood are homogenous in structure. The cut surface is even and smooth, with uneven fibres and a clearly visible pattern.

Hornbeam is a hard wood species. Its Brinell hardness is 3.7, and its density is 740–795 kg/m³. Hornbeam possesses high resistance to abrasion: historically, mill gears, weaving shuttles, and press screws were made from it.

Hornbeam timber is easier to process in its raw state. As dry solid wood is more viscous, appropriate tools should be selected for sawing, milling, and drilling.

It is an optimal species for turning works. Hornbeam allows for the turning of minute details with perfect clarity and holds threads well (on screws and clamps). It polishes to a mirror shine: the surface becomes smooth as bone. The wood can be dyed through completely, which is why it is used to imitate black ebony wood.
