For facing materials, the grade indicates aesthetic characteristics rather than technical quality. Since lamella is used as a face layer, its classification is based on visual parameters: the presence of knots, sapwood, medullary rays, and colour uniformity.

Hardwood sawn veneer is used as the wear layer of flooring. Apple Wood Sawn Lamella Production Technology
- Raw material selection. The production process begins with the rigorous selection of premium and prime-grade boards. This stage defines the quality of the future product, as timber characteristics directly affect the aesthetics and performance of the lamella.
- Kiln drying. Selected raw materials undergo drying in specialised kilns. This technology allows for the achievement of an optimal joinery moisture content (MC) level (8–10%), which is essential for material stability. Correct drying reduces internal stresses and prevents deformation or cracking.
- Calibration. Before sawing, the boards are calibrated to dimensions that match the parameters of the saw frame. This approach ensures high precision in subsequent processing and optimal material yield.
- Sawing. Prepared blanks are fed into a Wintersteiger machine. After setting the thickness and other parameters, the timber is resawn into sheets. The use of high-precision equipment guarantees consistent saw-cut quality.
- Quality control (QC) and grading. The finished sawn veneer is inspected for compliance with dimensions, thickness, and grade. After grading, the lamellas are grouped into bundles, which are then packed onto pallets for transport.
Apple Wood: Technical and Aesthetic Characteristics
Apple (Malus domestica) is a dense hardwood species distinguished by its high density, exceptional toughness, and premium aesthetic qualities. Due to limited industrial timber supplies and inherent seasoning challenges, apple wood is primarily utilized in exclusive joinery, high-end furniture, and decorative arts.
Domestic and wild apple trees are widely distributed across the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. In Ukraine, the species is found throughout the country; however, mature logs (aged 50+ years) are of the highest commercial value for woodworking and veneer production.
In terms of mechanical strength, apple wood often outperforms common oak and ash. Its density ranges from 730 to 800 kg/m³, with a Brinell hardness of 4.5–5.0 HB. This split-resistant hardwood exhibits excellent plasticity and responds well to steam bending. Furthermore, it possesses high wear resistance, making it an ideal material for functional components such as hand plane soles and tool handles.
The heartwood and sapwood are clearly differentiated. The heartwood features a rich palette of reddish-brown, deep brown, and terracotta hues. The narrow sapwood typically presents light pink or yellowish tones. Over time, the timber develops a more saturated, mature patina. The texture is fine and uniform, with diffuse-porous structures that are virtually invisible to the naked eye. Interlocked and figured grain patterns are common, providing a high decorative value.
Despite its high density, apple wood exhibits excellent machining properties, including cutting, turning, and sanding. It is a preferred choice for fine-detail carving and micro-sculpture. The timber is highly receptive to oil and wax finishes. This fine-grained species can be polished to a superior mirror-like finish. It demonstrates reliable adhesive bonding (gluing) but requires compatibility testing with water-based lacquers and coatings due to its high tannin content.
