Plywood is a layered material widely used in constructing non-permanent structures, furniture making, cladding walls, ceilings, and floors, and manufacturing decorative and household items. Composed of cross-laminated sheets of rotary-cut veneer, these panels are known for their strength, dimensional stability, and easy machinability. The layers are bonded with adhesive, and its composition determines another crucial property: moisture resistance. In this article, we will examine how two common types of plywood—FK (Interior) and FSF (Exterior)—perform in this regard.

Meaning of the FK and FSF markings
Interior Birch Plywood is a layered panel bonded with urea-formaldehyde glue. Such sheets are referred to as moisture-resistant, but direct contact with water will cause the veneer to swell. Plywood panels marked FK are not designed for harsh service conditions. The material retains its dimensional stability under fluctuating indoor humidity levels, making it suitable strictly for interior work. Moisture-resistant FK interior plywood is used to produce:
- interior partitions;
- flooring underlayment;
- cabinet furniture;
- wall and ceiling cladding;
- boxes, organizers, and packaging.
Exterior Birch Plywood is a wood-laminated material manufactured using phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. This resin both bonds and impregnates the veneer sheets. The panels also receive additional treatment to enhance moisture resistance. When comparing which plywood is superior (FK or FSF), the latter wins in terms of moisture resistance. Moisture-resistant FSF exterior plywood is used in:
- facade cladding;
- timber framing;
- roofing work;
- the manufacture of railcars, vehicles, and vessels.
The material also features higher strength and wear resistance. For instance, the bending strength of FK plywood is 40 MPa, compared to 60 MPa for FSF plywood. Both varieties can be laminated and sanded. At the same time, FK plywood panels are considered more suitable for decorative finishing.

How to distinguish FK plywood from FSF?
You can visually tell these plywood types apart by looking at the edge or cut line. The side edges of FK sheets are virtually uniform in color, with little difference in shade between the veneer and glue line. Looking at the edge of FSF plywood reveals darker glue layers. The phenol-formaldehyde resin gives the adhesive lines a dark brown color.

Another way to distinguish FSF from FK panels is the wood species. Moisture-resistant interior sheets are most commonly made from hardwoods, while exterior high-water-resistance plywood may use softwood timber. If the material smells of pine, it is likely an FSF panel.
Which plywood is better: birch or pine?
The service properties of plywood are influenced by the wood species used for the veneer sheets. Both hardwood and softwood are used in the production of laminated panels.

Hardwood Plywood |
Veneer for panels is made from poplar, alder, okoume, ceiba, and birch. Although poplar and alder timber is easy to machine, it belongs to soft hardwood species. Plywood made of poplar or alder is not suitable for all structural tasks, but is affordable. Plywood sheets made of exotic species are more expensive due to logistics and specific application requirements. For example, waterproof okoume plywood can be used in demanding environments. Our warehouse stocks marine plywood made from okoume wood, used in boat building and yacht cabin linings. Fire-retardant okoume plywood is used for flooring, wall, and ceiling cladding in public buildings, retail spaces, and industrial facilities. This plywood does not burn openly, but smolders with virtually no smoke. Ceiba wood is lightweight, dense, and flexible. If you need to make large but lightweight products, consider lightweight ceiba plywood. For producing curved components, Flexible Plywood is ideal, where veneer sheets are laid with matching grain orientation across adjacent plies rather than perpendicularly. This plywood sheet can bend both along and across the grain. Birch plywood holds a leading position in terms of price-to-performance ratio. Durable panels are suitable for non-permanent structures, cabinet furniture making, and interior finishing work. |

Softwood Plywood |
Pine plywood is more affordable than birch, but lacks comparable bending strength. Pine veneer is typically used for FSF exterior plywood. This sheet material is well-suited for exterior cladding. The resin-rich wood adds natural moisture resistance on top of the waterproof glue. |
|
Combi Plywood |
Combination plywood consisting of hardwood and softwood plies is widely available on the market. Most often, birch veneer is used for the face veneers and pine for the inner cores. Plywood is also available with birch faces and alternating birch and pine core plies. Combi plywood panels are sufficiently strong, suitable for diverse tasks, and sit in an accessible price bracket. |
Which plywood is environmentally friendly?
Can plywood be used in living spaces? Yes, provided you choose the right type of sheet material.
Sheets marked FK are bonded with safe urea glue and are considered the most eco-friendly option. These panels are certified for interior use. Items made from these panels are chosen for both commercial (offices, retail, cafés) and residential spaces (houses and apartments).

FSF exterior plywood contains phenol. While emissions are minimal (8 mg per 100 g), the material is generally not used in bedrooms, living rooms, or children’s rooms. Phenol-formaldehyde bonded sheets are well-suited for exterior work, packaging, outbuildings, and warehouse partitions.
