The difference between flexible and bent plywood

Bent plywood is produced by bending a sheet (shaping the wood panel) and pressing it into shape. To create curved surfaces, glued plywood sheets are placed into preheated moulds. The material remains under pressure until the adhesive cures. Mould-bent plywood sheets are used to manufacture furniture fronts, chair backs and seats, and various household items. High-quality bent plywood requires industrial equipment, though experienced craftsmen can also produce smaller radius parts in a workshop setting.

Flexible Plywood is a multi-ply panel consisting of several glued veneer sheets. The key feature of this material is how the veneer plies are laid. In standard plywood, the grain direction of alternating layers is cross-oriented (perpendicular). In flexible panels, however, the veneer sheets are laid with parallel grain alignment. Producing curved parts from flexible plywood is much simpler because these panels bend easily.

Flexible plywood is manufactured using Ceiba veneer. This exotic hardwood tree is native to the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The timber is classified as a soft hardwood. Solid Ceiba wood is lightweight, moderately dense, and flexible. This industrial timber is used to produce veneer, plywood, packaging, decorative items, and household goods.

1. Stability and strength. Thanks to its layered structure, the panels maintain dimensional stability. The material does not warp or delaminate.
2. Wear resistance. The multi-ply panels withstand service loads in residential and commercial spaces, making them suitable for fit-outs in apartments, houses, offices, retail spaces, lobbies, and conference halls.
3. Ease of processing. Flexible plywood is easy to machine. Sheets can be cut, sanded, and glued without difficulty.
4. Moisture resistance. Flexible plywood is designed for interior use. The material handles typical indoor humidity and temperature fluctuations.
5. Light weight. Ceiba timber is almost twice as light as solid birch. This makes the exotic species an ideal choice for lightweight structures.
6. Environmental safety. Natural veneer is safe for humans and animals. Safe, non-toxic adhesives are used to bond the veneer layers. Panels with an E1 emission class rating are approved for indoor residential applications.
7. Aesthetic appeal. Another benefit of flexible plywood panels is finishing versatility. The wood features a light, uniform colour. The light beige surface can be finished with oils, waxes, and varnishes.
