Tools for processing the solid wood require sharp edges. If a knife is dull, the soft lime fibres do not cut cleanly but crumble, leaving a fuzzy surface. It sands easily, but a fine-grain abrasive is needed for a smooth surface.
The solid wood is light, practically white or slightly creamy. The heartwood is not distinct. Over time, it may acquire a slightly yellow or grey tint. A delicate pattern is visible on the cut; the texture is uniform without large pores.
Lime has excellent thermal insulation qualities, making it suitable for cladding work in baths and saunas. Lime shelves do not heat up to skin-burning temperatures, even in a hot steam room. Unlike pine, lime does not “weep” hot resin.
