Prime (extra) grade edged hornbeam timber with a thickness of 32 mm and 52 mm is a durable sawn timber product featuring a uniform texture clear of defects, dark stains, false heartwood, or knots. We offer kiln-dried (KD) joinery boards with a moisture content (MC) of 8–10%. This solid wood provides manufacturers of furniture, stairs, sports equipment, and flooring with the advantage of virtually waste-free production. Hornbeam timber is available for self-collection from our warehouse, and shipping across Ukraine is available.

Characteristics of Extra Grade Hornbeam Edged Board

The grade of a board is a classification of timber based on natural wood features. This includes the number and type of knots, the presence of cracks or sapwood, and the uniformity of texture and colour. The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than its basic physical and mechanical properties. Assuming the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the board’s strength.

Features of Extra (Premium) Grade Boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour variations are not permitted.
  • This is the material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Hornbeam Edged Board

When determining the lumber grade, the natural characteristics of the wood are evaluated: knots and their classifications, the potential presence of checks, shakes, or sapwood, as well as the uniformity of color and grain texture. This grading system primarily characterizes the visual and decorative qualities of the sawn timber. The grade has a negligible impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, provided that the boards are manufactured from the same species and feature the proper moisture content (MC).

Features of Grade 1 Boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery work: the surface is practically free of features, but the price is more accessible.
  • Occasional live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • The optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture where the natural wood grain is valued.

Advantages of Edged Hornbeam Board

  1. Time efficiency and a quick start. Edged board allows you to skip the most labour-intensive and messy stage of initial preparation. You do not need to spend time removing bark or levelling edges on a band saw. The material is immediately ready for precise cutting, planing, and gluing. This reduces the production cycle by 20-30%, allowing your workshop to produce more output per unit of time.
  2. Maximum yield coefficient. When buying unedged timber, you pay for the total volume, a portion of which (bark, sapwood, edge defects) will become waste. With edged board, you pay only for usable working material. You receive a predictable result: 90-95% of the purchased volume becomes the finished product.
  3. Preserving tool life. The bark of any tree often accumulates dust and sand, which act as an abrasive. Processing unedged timber dulls planer knives and circular saw blades much faster. By working with clean edged boards, you extend the life of your cutting tools and save on machine maintenance.
  4. Precision in calculations. You can accurately calculate the cost price of a future product (stairs, facades, worktops) before work begins. This eliminates the risk of miscalculating waste percentages.
  5. Convenient storage. Edged material has clear width parameters, which simplifies stock control. Boards with processed edges take up 1.5 times less space in the warehouse compared to unedged timber.

Hornbeam Edged Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality edged boards made from selected and properly dried timber. The timber is stored in appropriate conditions. We have solid boards available in our warehouse in the following dimensions:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm
  • Width: From 20 cm
  • Length: 1 – 4.5 m

Note: Boards longer than 3 metres incur a +20% surcharge on the listed price. Our specialists will help you select quality material for projects of any complexity and scale. We also provide a rough cutting service to facilitate easier transport.

Features of Kiln-Dried Hornbeam Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, the moisture content of the wood is brought to an average of 8–10%. This is the optimal figure for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses in the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing. The risk of warping, distortion, or shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over long periods under stable usage conditions.
  • Biological Purity of the Material. The temperature regimes of kiln drying inhibit the development of mould and fungi. It also destroys the majority of insect larvae, including woodworm. As a result, the timber enters production in a biologically safe state, which is particularly important for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of Mechanical and Finish Processing. Dry timber has a stable structure, which directly affects the processing result. During milling and sawing, the tool works cleaner, and the edge comes out smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, and the fibres do not “raise”. Furthermore, stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate deeper into the pores, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Areas of Application for Hornbeam Edged Board

Hornbeam Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing wear-resistant worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid board is also used for producing tops for bar counters, reception desks, counters, kitchen islands, and general working surfaces.

Hornbeam Furniture Facades

Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such items are used to furnish both residential and public spaces, including offices. Furniture facades made from hardwood species withstand increased operational loads, which is vital for high-traffic areas.

Hornbeam Flooring

Dry solid board is used for the production of various floor coverings. The timber can be applied as the top layer of parquet and engineered boards. Additionally, natural wood is used to manufacture tongue-and-groove floorboards for indoor installation.

Internal Stairs made of Hornbeam

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Properly treated timber resists abrasive wear and friction in zones of the most intense traffic. Solid wood is subject to repeated scraping and refinishing, which extends the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements from Hornbeam Timber

The unique texture and distinct pattern of growth rings make every item an exclusive design object. This applies whether it is a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder. The wood’s ability to easily undergo various types of finishing (tinting, varnishing, brushing) allows the decor to integrate into any style, from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Hornbeam Timber: Key Characteristics

Specialists identify 41 species of Hornbeam (Carpinus). This is a deciduous tree found across Europe, North America, and Asia. Two varieties are common in Ukraine: Common Hornbeam, reaching 25-30 m in height, and Oriental Hornbeam, which grows to 5-8 m.

Cross and longitudinal sections of the solid wood are uniform in structure. The surface of the cut is even and smooth, with uneven fibres and a clearly visible pattern.

Hornbeam is a hard wood species. Its Brinell hardness is 3.7, and its density is 740-795 kg/m³. Hornbeam possesses high resistance to abrasion. Historically, it was used to make mill cogs, weaving shuttles, and press screws.

Hornbeam timber is easier to process when green. As dry solid wood is more viscous, appropriate tools must be selected for sawing, milling, and drilling.

It is an optimal species for turning work. Hornbeam allows for the turning of the finest details with perfect clarity and holds threads well (on screws and clamps). It polishes to a mirror shine, with the surface becoming smooth as bone. The wood can be dyed through completely, which is why it is used to imitate black ebony wood.
