Edged sweet cherry timber of prime (extra) grade is a kiln-dried sawn timber product with a moisture content of 8–10%. The 32 mm and 52 mm thick boards are used for the manufacturing of premium furniture, wall paneling, and solid parquet. The sawn timber features square-edged sides clear of wane. The face surface is clear of defects such as knots, sapwood, and wormholes. Sawn timber products can be collected from our warehouse in Kyiv or shipped across Ukraine.

Characteristics of Extra Grade Edged Cherry Board

Board grade is a classification of lumber based on the natural features of the wood: the number and type of knots, presence of cracks or sapwood, and uniformity of texture and colour.

Grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than basic physical-mechanical properties. Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the strength of the board.

Features of Extra (Prime) Grade Boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour variations are not permitted.
  • This is the material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Edged Cherry Board

When determining the lumber grade, the natural characteristics of the wood are evaluated: knots and their classifications, the potential presence of checks, shakes, or sapwood, as well as the uniformity of color and grain texture. This grading system primarily characterizes the visual and decorative qualities of the sawn timber. The grade has a negligible impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, provided that the boards are manufactured from the same species and feature the proper moisture content (MC).

Features of Grade 1 Boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery work: the surface is practically free of features, but the price is more accessible.
  • Occasional live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • The optimal choice for worktops, staircases, parquet, and cabinet furniture where the natural pattern of the wood is appreciated.

Advantages of Edged Cherry Board

  1. Time Efficiency and Quick Start. Edged board allows you to skip the most labour-intensive and messy stage of primary preparation. You do not need to spend time removing bark or levelling edges on a band saw. The material is immediately ready for precise cutting, jointing, and gluing. This shortens the production cycle by 20–30%, allowing the workshop to release more products per unit of time.
  2. Maximum Useful Yield. When buying unedged timber, you pay for the total volume, a portion of which (bark, sapwood, edge defects) goes to waste. With the edged board format, you pay only for workable material. You receive a predictable result: 90–95% of the purchased volume becomes a finished product.
  3. Preservation of Tool Life. Tree bark often accumulates dust and grit, which act as an abrasive. Processing unedged margins blunts planer knives and circular saw blades significantly faster. Working with clean Edged Cherry Board extends the life of your cutting tools and saves on machine maintenance.
  4. Calculation Accuracy. You can accurately calculate the cost price of a future product (stairs, facades, worktops) before work begins, without the risk of miscalculating wastage percentages.
  5. Convenient Storage. Edged material has clear width parameters, simplifying stocktaking. Boards with processed edges take up 1.5 times less space in the warehouse than unedged timber.

Edged Cherry Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality edged boards manufactured from selected and properly dried timber. The lumber is stored under appropriate conditions. We have solid wood boards in the following dimensions in stock:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm
  • Width: From 20 cm
  • Length: 1–4.5 m

Boards longer than 3 metres incur a +20% surcharge on the listed price. Our specialists will help you select quality material for projects of any complexity and scale. An additional rough cutting service is available for more convenient transport.

Features of Kiln-Dried Cherry Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, wood moisture is brought to an average of 8–10% — the optimal figure for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses in the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing: the risk of warping, twisting, or shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over time under stable usage conditions.
  • Biological Purity. The temperature regimes of kiln drying inhibit the development of mould and fungi and destroy most insect larvae, including woodworm. As a result, the lumber enters production in a biologically safe state, which is particularly important for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of Mechanical and Finishing Work. Dry timber has a stable structure, directly influencing the processing result. During milling and sawing, tools work cleaner, and the edge comes out smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, grain does not “raise,” and stains, oils, and lacquers penetrate deeper into the pores, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Applications of Edged Cherry Board

Cherry Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing hard-wearing worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid boards are also used for the production of bar counters, reception desks, shop counters, kitchen islands, and working surfaces.

Cherry Furniture Facades

Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor or wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board last for decades. Such items are used to furnish both residential and public spaces, including offices. Furniture facades made from hardwood withstand increased operational loads, which is crucial for spaces with high footfall.

Internal Cherry Staircases

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Properly treated timber resists abrasive wear and friction in zones of the most intense traffic. Solid wood is subject to repeated scraping and refinishing, which extends the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements from Cherry Wood

The unique texture and inimitable pattern of annual rings make every item, whether a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder, an exclusive design object. The ability of the wood to easily accept various types of finishing (toning, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to be integrated into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Cherry Timber: Characteristics

Cherry (Prunus avium) is a deciduous tree belonging to the Rose family. Plantations are found in regions with a warm climate. Its distribution area covers Europe, southern Asia, and northern Africa. The tree reaches a height of 18–24 m, with a trunk diameter of up to 75 cm.

Cherry belongs to the heartwood species. The sapwood and heartwood differ in colour. The outer layer is light (white, light yellow, or cream tones occur). The central part is more saturated: brown, amber, and red colours predominate. Rays and fine pores are visible on the wood cut. Generally, the grain is straight, but wavy inclusions are possible. The surface is smooth with a natural lustre.

At 12% moisture content, the density of the solid wood is 580–630 kg/m³. Cherry is lighter than oak and beech. Furniture made from this fruit species turns out elegant and does not create excessive load on floors.

Hardness on the Brinell scale is 3.5. Cherry is significantly softer than maple or ash but sufficiently durable for cabinet facades, tables, and wall panels. The species has excellent elasticity indicators. The solid wood bends well after steaming, which historically made the material popular in styles featuring many curved lines (such as Art Nouveau).

The timber cuts cleanly, sands and polishes well, and glues without problems using standard joinery glues. Fresh timber has a pale pink or peach hue. Under the influence of light (UV rays) and oxygen, cherry rapidly darkens, acquiring a reddish-brown (cognac) colour.
