The balance of price and quality is what defines grade 1 unedged beech timber. The available sawn timber features thicknesses of 32 mm and 52 mm and a moisture content of 8–10% (kiln-dried). Solitary small, intergrown sound knots and natural shade transitions are permitted on the boards. Grade 1 solid beech provides manufacturers of serial furniture, interior doors, and stair components with ease of milling and high joints strength. Self-collection from the warehouse and fast shipping across Ukraine are available.

Characteristics of Extra (Prime) Grade Unedged Beech

Board grade is a classification of timber based on natural wood characteristics: the number and type of knots, presence of cracks or sapwood, and uniformity of texture and colour. The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than basic physical-mechanical properties. Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the board’s strength.

Features of Extra (Prime) Grade Boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring. * No knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour variations are permitted.
  • This is the material of choice for furniture facades, wall panelling, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Unedged Beech

The concept of wood grading is based on classifying sawn timber by its visual characteristics. It takes into account the number and classifications of knots, the potential presence of checks, shakes, and sapwood, as well as the uniformity of the grain pattern and color shade. The main point to remember is that the grade primarily determines the aesthetic appearance rather than the structural reliability of the material. If boards of the same species have undergone proper kiln drying (KD), the mechanical strength of the sawn timber will be virtually identical, regardless of its grade.

Features of Grade 1 Boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery work: a surface practically free of defects, but at a more accessible price point.
  • Isolated live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • An optimal choice for worktops, staircases, parquet, and cabinet furniture where the natural grain pattern is appreciated.

Advantages of Unedged Beech Board

  1. Maximum Economic Efficiency. This is the most affordable type of timber available. The cost per cubic metre of unedged Beech board is significantly lower than that of square-edged timber, as the price does not include edging costs or production waste percentages. It is the optimal choice for those with their own cutting equipment or those seeking a budget-friendly solution.
  2. Unique “Live Edge” Aesthetics. in joinery, the waney edge is not a defect but an aesthetic feature. Preserving the natural contour of the trunk allows for the creation of exclusive furniture in Loft, Eco, Rustic, and Country styles. This type of board is specifically used to craft popular epoxy resin tables, bespoke window sills, breakfast bars, and headboards. 3. Freedom of Cutting. When working with square-edged boards, a craftsman is limited by the strict geometry of the timber. Unedged board offers freedom: you decide how to navigate around a knot or crack. This is particularly valuable when manufacturing curved components (such as chair legs or decor elements), as it allows you to extract more usable raw material from the board.
  3. Versatility of Application. Depending on the species and grade, this material covers a wide range of tasks. It is suitable for everything from construction (formwork, scaffolding) to high-end design projects (live edge worktops, non-standard window sills).

Unedged Beech Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality unedged boards manufactured from selected and properly seasoned timber. The lumber is stored in appropriate conditions. We stock solid wood boards in the following dimensions:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm
  • Width: From 20 cm
  • Length: 1–4.5 m

Boards exceeding 3 metres in length incur a +20% surcharge on the list price. Our specialists will assist you in selecting quality material for projects of any complexity and scale. We also provide a rough cutting service to facilitate easier transport.

Features of Kiln-Dried Beech Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, the wood moisture content is brought to an average of 8–10%—the optimal figure for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses within the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing; the risk of warping, cupping, or shrinkage cracks is substantially lower.
  • Biological Purity. The temperature regimes of kiln drying inhibit the development of mould and fungi and destroy most insect larvae, particularly woodworm. As a result, the timber enters production in a biologically safe state, which is crucial for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of Mechanical and Finish Processing. Dry timber has a stable structure, directly influencing the machining result. During milling and sawing, tools work cleaner, and edges remain smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “raise,” and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate deeper into the pores, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Applications of Unedged Beech Board

Beech Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing hard-wearing worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid boards are also used for producing tops for bar counters, reception desks, shop counters, kitchen islands, and general work surfaces.

Beech Furniture Facades

Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such items are used to furnish both residential and public spaces, including offices. Furniture facades made from hardwood withstand increased wear and tear, which is essential for high-traffic areas.

Beech Flooring

Dry solid board is used for the production of various floor coverings. The timber can be applied as the top layer of parquet and engineered flooring. Additionally, natural wood is used to manufacture tongue-and-groove floorboards for interior laying.

Internal Beech Staircases

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Properly treated timber resists abrasive wear in areas of intense foot traffic. Solid wood can be sanded and refinished multiple times, extending the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements from Beech Wood

The unique texture and distinct pattern of growth rings make every item—whether a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder—an exclusive design object. The wood’s ability to easily accept various types of finishing (staining, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to be integrated into any style, from Scandinavian minimalism to Rustic.

Beech Wood: Main Characteristics

Beech (Fagus) is a deciduous tree common in Europe, Asia, and America. In Ukraine, Beech grows in the Carpathians. The tree features a broad crown and smooth, light-grey bark, growing up to 50 m tall with a trunk diameter reaching up to 3 m.

The structure of Beech timber is dense and uniform. Growth rings and scattered pores are clearly visible on the cut. The wood of young Beech is practically monochromatic (beige tones with brown or pinkish inclusions predominate). Trees older than 80 years are distinguished by a dark red heartwood.

At 12% moisture content, the density ranges between 700–750 kg/m³. Beech is a heavy, solid wood. Its hardness on the Brinell scale is 3.8 – 4.0 HB. Beech solid wood boasts excellent wear resistance. The species withstands friction and point loads, making it suitable for stairs, thresholds, parquet, and children’s furniture where impact resistance is vital.

Beech is the champion among industrial species for its bending capability. Under steam treatment, its fibres become plastic, allowing the material to be bent at significant angles without breaking. After drying, the shape is retained well. It is from Beech that the famous “Vienna chairs” and bentwood frames for upholstered furniture are made.

The wood is hard but cuts cleanly and sands well. Solid wood is easily stained to resemble Walnut, Cherry, or Mahogany. Pigment applies evenly without blotches. Beech is odourless and resin-free, which is why it is traditionally used for kitchen utensils (chopping boards, spatulas) and toys.
