Dry unedged Amur corktree timber of grade 1 has a moisture content (MC) of 8–10%. These joinery boards with a live edge are used for wear-resistant worktops, wall cladding, and the manufacturing of cabinet furniture. Grade 1 sawn timber offers an opportunity to reduce the product’s production cost compared to the prime grade. Boards (32/52 mm) are ready for dispatch by the piece or wholesale. We ship across Ukraine, and self-collection is available.

Characteristics of Unedged Amur Cork Tree Board (Extra Grade)

The grade of a board is a classification of timber based on the natural features of the wood. This includes the number and type of knots, the presence of cracks or sapwood, and the uniformity of texture and colour.

The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than basic physical-mechanical properties. Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the strength of the board.

Features of Extra (Premium) Grade Boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour changes are not permitted.
  • This is material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Unedged Amur Cork Tree Board (Grade 1)

The concept of wood grading is based on classifying sawn timber by its visual characteristics. It takes into account the number and classifications of knots, the potential presence of checks, shakes, and sapwood, as well as the uniformity of the grain pattern and color shade. The main point to remember is that the grade primarily determines the aesthetic appearance rather than the structural reliability of the material. If boards of the same species have undergone proper kiln drying (KD), the mechanical strength of the sawn timber will be virtually identical, regardless of its grade.

Features of Grade 1 Boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery works: the surface is practically without features, but the price is more accessible.
  • Occasional live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • An optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture where the natural pattern of the wood is valued.

Advantages of Unedged Amur Cork Tree Board

  1. Maximum Economic Benefit. This is the most affordable type of timber. The cost per cubic metre of unedged board is significantly lower than that of edged timber. This is because the price does not include the costs of edging and the percentage of production waste. It is the optimal choice for those who have equipment for self-cutting or are seeking a budget-friendly solution.
  2. Unique “Live Edge” Aesthetics. in joinery, a waney edge is not a defect but an aesthetic feature. Preserving the natural contour of the trunk allows for the creation of exclusive furniture in loft, eco, rustic, and country styles. It is precisely from such boards that popular epoxy resin tables, bespoke windowsills, bar counters, and bed headboards are made. 3. Freedom of Cutting. When working with edged boards, the craftsman is limited by the strict geometry of the timber. Unedged board offers freedom: you decide yourself how to work around a knot or crack. This is particularly valuable when manufacturing curvilinear details (for example, chair legs or decor elements), as it allows you to “extract” more useful raw material from the board.
  3. Versatility of Application. Depending on the breed and grade, this material covers a wide range of tasks. This ranges from construction (shuttering, scaffolding) to designer tasks (worktops with a live edge, non-standard windowsills).

Unedged Amur Cork Tree Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality unedged boards made from selected and properly dried timber. The lumber is stored in appropriate conditions. We have solid boards available in the following dimensions:

Features of Kiln-Dried Amur Cork Tree Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, the moisture content of the wood is brought to an average of 8–10%. This is the optimal indicator for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses in the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing: the risk of warping, distortion, or the formation of shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Kiln-dried timber products retain their shape better over a long period under stable usage conditions.
  • Biological Purity of the Material. The temperature regimes of kiln drying suppress the development of mould and fungi. Furthermore, it destroys the majority of insect pest larvae, particularly woodworm. As a result, the timber enters production in a biologically safe state, which is especially important for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of Mechanical and Finish Processing. Dry timber has a stable structure, which directly affects the processing result. During milling and sawing, the tool works cleaner, and the edge comes out smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “raise”, and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate deeper into the pores. This ensures reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Areas of Application for Unedged Amur Cork Tree Board

Amur Cork Tree Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing hard-wearing worktops for writing desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid board is also used for the production of tops for bars and reception desks, counters, kitchen islands, and work surfaces.

Amur Cork Tree Furniture Facades

Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor-standing and suspended cabinets made from furniture board last for decades. Such items are used to furnish residential and public premises, particularly offices. Furniture facades made from hardwood withstand increased operational loads, which is vital for spaces with high footfall.

Amur Cork Tree Flooring

Dry solid board is used for the production of various floor coverings. Timber can be applied as the top layer of parquet and engineered boards. Additionally, tongue-and-groove floorboards are manufactured from natural wood for indoor installation.

Internal Stairs Made of Amur Cork Tree

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Properly treated timber resists abrasive wear and abrasion in zones of the most intense traffic. The solid wood is subject to multiple cycles of scraping and refinishing, which extends the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements from Amur Cork Tree Timber

The unique texture and inimitable pattern of growth rings make every item an exclusive designer object. This applies whether it is a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder. The ability of the wood to easily undergo various types of finishing (tinting, varnishing, brushing) allows the decor to be integrated into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Amur Cork Tree Solid Wood: Properties

Amur Cork Tree (Phellodendron amurense), also known as Amur Velvet, has a medium density of approximately 540-600 kg/m³. It is a moderately heavy and strong timber that withstands mechanical loads. The solid wood cannot be called extremely hard, so it is not typically used during heavy construction works.

The heartwood has a golden-yellow or pale green tint. The sapwood is lighter and creamy. The texture is uniform and smooth with fine fibres. The wood pattern of the cork tree resembles Ash.

Amur Velvet timber is moderately elastic. It is not a leader in bending (like Beech), but it is well-suited for standard bent elements (aprons, banisters) after steaming.

The material is simple to work with. It undergoes sawing, sanding, milling, tinting, and varnishing without issues. It cuts softly, like Walnut, and does not blunt tools as severely as Oak or Acacia. Chips break off evenly. Amur Velvet polishes to a high gloss. Thanks to distinct growth rings and a porous structure, the breed is used for brushing (removal of soft fibres) and patination. The solid wood absorbs oils well, which highlights its golden colour.
