This premium sawn timber is successfully used in the furniture industry, flooring manufacturing, wall paneling, and various interior furnishings.

Edged and Unedged Amur Cork Tree Boards: Stock Availability

We offer high-quality edged and unedged timber products for interior items and internal finishing. What distinguishes edged from unedged Amur Cork Tree boards?

Edged Amur Cork Tree Board

This timber has no bark on the side edges. However, it is important to understand that technical standards allow for a minor amount of wane. The timber is ready for further processing and is convenient for storage and transport.

Edged boards are chosen for creating furniture, solid parquet flooring, and interior panels.

Unedged Cork Tree Board

Bark is present on the side edges of this material. Unedged boards are more affordable in price but require preliminary preparation. The craftsman will need to remove the bark and level the edges independently.

Unedged Amur Cork Tree boards are a true find for design projects in Loft or Eco styles. Thanks to the pronounced contrast between the light sapwood and the darker heartwood, this species is used for manufacturing “live edge” worktops, window sills, and accent décor, where the natural contour becomes the main aesthetic advantage.

Classification of Amur Cork Tree Boards by Grade

Timber sorting usually occurs based on visual characteristics (the number of wood features per linear metre or board area).

Characteristic Extra (Prime) Grade 1 Grade 2
General Appearance Surface uniform in texture and colour. Minor natural features are permitted. Variegated appearance, pronounced colour changes.
Knots Not permitted at all, or only microscopic “pin” knots (up to 3–5 mm) in singular quantities. Healthy light knots (live), intergrown with the wood (diameter up to 20–30 mm) are permitted. Large knots, dark and partially non-intergrown (if not loose), and “tobacco” knots are permitted.
Sapwood (Light Part) Not permitted (heartwood only) or permitted only on the reverse side. Minor healthy sapwood that does not spoil the overall pattern is permitted. Permitted without restrictions. Creates a striking contrast for decorative tasks.
Cracks Absent. Micro-cracks that do not affect integrity are permitted. End splits and shallow surface cracks are permitted.
Sphere of Use Elite furniture, kitchen façade elements, musical instruments, expensive parquet. Worktops, stairs, cabinet furniture, wall panels. Rustic, Loft, Eco, Country style furniture, trusses, as well as upholstered furniture frames, sub-flooring.

Does Grade Affect Board Strength?

This is a common question, and the answer has two aspects: physical and structural.

  • Physical: The structure of wood fibres in Grade 2 is just as hard and dense as in Extra grade. Amur Cork Tree remains a robust material regardless of the presence of knots. A part made from a Grade 2 board will have identical physical-mechanical indicators to a part made from a higher grade board.
  • Structural: The grade affects the part’s bending and tensile strength at defect locations. A large knot breaks the straight wood fibres. At this point, the board is less resistant to breaking loads. If you are making a chair leg and there is a large through-knot in the middle (characteristic of Grade 2), it may snap precisely there. Low-grade boards may have cracks that reduce resistance to vibrations and dynamic loads.

For decorative purposes (wall cladding, manufacturing worktops or façades), the grade virtually does not impact the product’s strength. For load-bearing elements (chair frames, table legs, long shelves without supports), it is better to use Extra or Grade 1. This is precisely the timber represented in our warehouse programme.

How Many Cubic Metres are in an Amur Cork Tree Board?

Timber is measured in cubic metres, hence the price of timber materials is quoted per cube. How do you understand how many cubes fit into 1 board? It is necessary to determine the volume using the formula: V = a × b × c, where ‘a’ is length, ‘b’ is width, and ‘c’ is thickness.

For clarity, let us calculate the cubic volume of an unedged board 40×300×3100, where 40 is the thickness, 300 is the width, and 3100 is the length.

We convert all indicators to metres, substitute them into the formula, and obtain: 3.1 × 0.3 × 0.04 = 0.037 m³.

Let us also find out the cubic volume of an edged board with a length of 2.8 m, thickness of 35 mm (0.035 m), and width of 25 cm (0.25 m). We perform calculations using the same formula: 2.8 × 0.25 × 0.035 = 0.025 m³.

What is the Price of Edged and Unedged Amur Cork Tree Boards?

The cost of timber products is influenced by grade, type, and dimensions. To find out the price of a board, use the formula: price per cube × V of the board. The cubic volume of boards is determined by multiplying length, width, and thickness.

Let’s clarify how the cost of timber is calculated with examples. Let’s take two boards:

  1. Edged Extra Grade: Length 2.6 m, width 28 cm (0.28 m), thickness 32 mm (0.032 m), price per cube, for example, €749.
  2. Unedged Grade 1: Length 2.9 m, width 26 cm (0.26 m), thickness 35 mm (0.035 m), price per m³, let’s say, €499.

€749 × (2.6 × 0.28 × 0.032) = €17.45 €499 × (2.9 × 0.26 × 0.035) = €13.17

The cost of boards of other dimensions is calculated analogously.

How Many Amur Cork Tree Boards are in 1 Cubic Metre?

How many boards fit into a cubic metre? The quantity is determined by the formula: N = 1 ÷ V, where N is pieces, and V is the volume of a specific board. Board volume formula: V = a (length) × b (width) × c (thickness).

For example, let us calculate the number of boards in a cube of 4-metre timber with a thickness of 50 mm and a width of 20 cm. Convert measurements to metres and substitute into the formula: 1 ÷ (4 × 0.2 × 0.05) = 25, meaning 25 boards of this size will fit in 1 m³.

Applications of Amur Cork Tree Joinery Boards

Timber materials from Amur Cork Tree are practically not used for exterior works, as the material requires additional special treatment. Items for internal use are created from the solid wood, for example:

  1. Furniture. Durable and wear-resistant wooden façades last for decades. Wardrobes, cabinets, chests of drawers, tall units, and sideboards made of Cork Tree wood are stained and fitted into interiors of various styles. Benches, shelving units, ottomans, chair elements, armrests for sofas and armchairs, and bed headboards are also produced from the solid wood.
  2. Partitions. Non-structural walls are often used for replanning and highlighting functional zones. Various constructions are made from dry boards: interior partitions, screens, and louvre dividers.
  3. Wall Panels. The expressive pattern and pleasant warm colour palette make Amur Cork Tree solid wood an excellent option for interior panels. Wooden wall panels logically complement traditional and contemporary settings. Wooden panels for walls are chosen for bedrooms, living rooms, studies, meeting rooms, restaurants, hotel rooms, and offices.
  4. Lighting. Wooden lighting remains a trend in interior fashion. Ceiling lights, floor lamps, table lamps, and wall sconces are created from textured solid wood that is pliable to processing.
  5. Home Décor. The wood is suitable for manufacturing photo frames, mirror frames, paintings, stationery organisers, ornaments, caskets, figurines, phone stands, toys, wall maps of the world, vases for dried flowers, and more.

Amur Cork Tree (Amur Velvet) Wood: Main Characteristics

Amur Cork Tree (Phellodendron) is a rare species distributed in Asia. The name “Amur Velvet” is connected to its range (in the Amur Valley) and the visual similarity of its rough bark to velvet fabric. The plant is called a Cork Tree because of its bark. The tree is more often used as a cork producer, as the layer of bark can be periodically cut without harm to the plant.

The density of the solid wood is approximately 500–600 kg/m³. This moderately hard wood of medium density is easily processed: it can be sawn, planed, glued, milled, sanded, stained, painted, and varnished.

The heartwood part of the trunk is coloured in rich yellowish-brown or golden tones. The sapwood is almost white. The texture is distinguished by pronounced growth rings and has a silky lustre. Visually, the solid wood resembles Ash.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

How do edged and unedged Amur Cork Tree boards differ?

Edged boards have processed side edges, making the material ready for manufacturing furniture panels, façade boards, and parquet. Unedged boards retain natural side edges with bark. This timber is chosen for creating exclusive tables with a live edge, bar counters, and décor with a rustic aesthetic.

What is the moisture content of the Cork Tree board?

We offer kiln-dried timber. The moisture content is 8–10% (±2%). This is the joinery standard which guarantees the stability of the wood and simplicity of processing.

What are the advantages of kiln-dried boards over air-dried?

Kiln drying relieves internal fibre tension, which prevents the finished product from cracking. The high temperature in the chamber destroys possible pest larvae and fungal spores. The technology allows one to avoid darkening (blue stain) and preserve the natural golden colour of the wood.

How hard is Amur Cork Tree wood compared to Oak or Ash?

Amur Cork Tree is slightly softer than Oak and Ash, but harder than Alder or Pine. On the Brinell scale, the species has indicators close to Walnut. The solid wood is optimal for processing: it blunts tools less and polishes well, yet remains sufficiently strong for manufacturing furniture or stair elements.

Why is it called the «tree with a silky lustre»?

After sanding and polishing, the surface of the Amur Cork Tree acquires a specific pearlescent or silky shimmer which is not inherent to Ash or Oak. The texture of the solid wood, when lacquered or coated with oil, is expressive and allows for the creation of aesthetic items.

How does Amur Cork Tree behave during painting and staining?

Thanks to its porous structure (similar to Ash), Amur Cork Tree easily absorbs stains and oils. The species is suitable for brushing (removal of soft fibres) and patination. When toning, one can achieve deep contrast by highlighting the pattern of growth rings, or leave the natural golden-honey shade by coating with transparent varnish.

For which items is it better to buy unedged Amur Cork Tree board?

Unedged Amur Cork Tree is a top material for items in Loft, Country, Farmhouse, Rustic, and Eco styles. Worktops for coffee and dining tables, accent window sills, bed headboards, wall panels, and shelves are created from this material.
