Sawn veneer sheets are a durable material used for desks, coffee tables, and side tables, as well as bar counters, shop counters, reception desks, and kitchen islands.
Furniture Fronts
Sawn lamella allows for the creation of unique custom cabinetry. Due to its sufficient thickness, veneered fronts can be milled or wire-brushed. Additionally, lamellas are used to create louvred fronts for wardrobes and other storage areas. Pine Sawn Lamella Production Technology
- Raw material selection. The production process begins with the rigorous selection of premium and prime-grade boards. This stage defines the quality of the future product, as timber characteristics directly affect the aesthetics and performance of the lamella.
- Kiln drying. Selected raw materials undergo drying in specialised kilns. This technology allows for the achievement of an optimal joinery moisture content (MC) level (8–10%), which is essential for material stability. Correct drying reduces internal stresses and prevents deformation or cracking.
- Calibration. Before sawing, the boards are calibrated to dimensions that match the parameters of the saw frame. This approach ensures high precision in subsequent processing and optimal material yield.
- Sawing. Prepared blanks are fed into a Wintersteiger machine. After setting the thickness and other parameters, the timber is resawn into sheets. The use of high-precision equipment guarantees consistent saw-cut quality.
- Quality control (QC) and grading. The finished sawn veneer is inspected for compliance with dimensions, thickness, and grade. After grading, the lamellas are grouped into bundles, which are then packed onto pallets for transport.
Pine Timber: Characteristics and Features
Pine (Pinus) is the primary softwood species in the European woodworking industry, accounting for over 60% of the sawn timber market. It is a versatile structural material utilized in applications ranging from timber framing to the production of veneer and furniture.
Pine has one of the most extensive natural ranges among conifers, spanning all of Europe and Northern Asia. In Ukraine, pine forests are primarily concentrated in the Polissia and forest-steppe zones. The highest technical value is attributed to so-called “Northern pine” (characterised by tight annual rings) and timber harvested from sandy soils (boreal pine), which features higher density and a superior knot structure.
Pine is a softwood species with a pronounced resinous nature. Mechanical properties depend significantly on the width of the annual rings and the cumulative proportion of latewood. Density values typically range between 500 and 520 kg/m³ (at standard moisture content). The Brinell hardness is 2.5 $HB$. Due to the inherent brittleness of the fibres, its bending capacity is relatively low.
There is a distinct visual contrast between the heartwood and the sapwood. The heartwood is reddish-brown, while the sapwood is wide and ranges from light yellow to creamy white. Under UV exposure, the timber undergoes photochemical darkening, yellowing and deepening in tone quickly. The texture is pronounced, featuring clearly defined growth rings and a predominantly straight grain. High resin content is evident through the clearly visible resin ducts on transverse sections. While resin acts as a natural antiseptic, it can complicate certain types of industrial finishing.
The timber demonstrates excellent machinability, being easy to saw, plane, and sand. However, high resin content can cause pitch buildup on cutting tools. Before painting or lacquering, a de-resining (pitch removal) procedure should be performed (treating the surface with specialized solvents); otherwise, resin may bleed through the finish. Pine is compatible with all types of industrial adhesives and mechanical fasteners (nails, screws). Solid timber accepts stains and varnishes well, but “blotching” often occurs due to the differing absorption rates of earlywood and latewood. The use of a wood conditioner is highly recommended prior to staining to ensure a uniform finish.
Pine remains the optimal material for budget and mid-range solutions in the construction and furniture sectors. The primary competitive advantages of this species are its favorable strength-to-weight ratio and consistent availability.
