Joinery Spruce Timber: Grades, Dimensions, Kiln-Drying Benefits

Unedged and edged spruce boards are cost-effective and easy-to-machine sawn timber products. We offer high-quality kiln-dried (KD) spruce lumber with the following specifications:

• grade: 1, Extra;
• moisture content: 8-10%;
• length: 1-4.5 m;

• thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm.

You can select boards yourself—we look forward to seeing you at our warehouse. We also select boards remotely. Upon agreement with the customer, we perform rough (transport) cutting of spruce boards purchased in our shop. This service is paid for additionally.

This light-coloured, lightweight, and resilient solid wood belongs to the softwood category. The sawn timber is suitable for the manufacturing of temporary structures, furniture, interior and exterior cladding, and musical instruments.

Edged and Unedged Spruce Boards: Stock Availability

We operate a stock programme that includes approximately 20 species of edged and unedged timber. Spruce timber is available in the warehouse, and supply upon order is possible. Both edged and unedged products are available. How do the varieties differ?

Edged Spruce Board (Carpathian Spruce)

This is timber where the bark has been cut off completely or almost completely from the sides. Technical documentation allows for a significant amount of wane. Edged boards are ready for use and are suitable for:

• Frame construction and roofing. Due to its low weight, spruce places less load on the foundation than oak or larch. Frames for partitions inside the house, counter-battens, and battens for fixing metal tiles are made from this wood.
• Joinery and interior items. Spruce is ideal for wall and ceiling cladding. Solid wood is used for gluing shields, from which wardrobes, shelves, and beds are subsequently made.
• Musical instruments. Alphorns (Trembitas), decks for violins, and guitars are created from solid spruce.

Unedged Spruce Board

This is lumber with bark remaining on the side edges. Such material is more affordable in price, but the craftsman will have to spend time removing the bark manually. Without processing, boards with bark are used in rustic projects.

Unedged spruce boards are used for:

• Rough construction works. Temporary structures for builders, formwork, and continuous roof sheathing are made from this material.
• Rustic, loft, and country style items. Boards are used to clad walls in themed restaurants or saunas. The bark on live-edge tabletops is removed, and the ends are sanded and varnished.
• Transport packaging. Pallets, crates, and boxes are produced from this timber.

Spruce Timber Grades: How to Choose the Right Option?

Spruce is a species that naturally has many branches, so the presence of knots is a characteristic feature. Grading of the timber is based on visual signs.

Extra (Premium) Grade

• Knots are almost absent. Only single “pin” knots (up to 3-5 mm), light and sound, are allowed.
• Cracks and resin pockets are absent.
• Use: Premium quality cladding, furniture face details where a surface with uniform texture is required.

1st Grade

• Sound light knots intergrown with the wood are allowed. Their quantity is not limited; the main priority is preserving the board’s geometry.
• Small hairline cracks that do not affect strength are possible. Single resin pockets are permitted.
• Use: Frame construction, rafter systems, finished flooring, stairs, visible interior elements.

2nd Grade

• Knots are the main difference from the 1st grade. Black, “tobacco”, and partially loose knots are allowed.
• End and surface cracks, as well as resin pockets, are permitted.
• Use: Concrete formwork, scaffolding, subfloors, hidden frame elements, packaging.

Does Grade Affect Board Strength?

Yes, it does, but it depends on the type of load. The density of wood in Extra and 2nd grade boards is identical. A knot-free section on a cheaper board withstands the same load as a section on a more expensive one.

Strength decreases specifically in places with features because a knot breaks the integrity of the fibres:

• Vertical load: The influence of grade is minimal. A 2nd grade board with knots works reliably as a vertical frame stud.
• Horizontal load: The grade is of critical importance. A large knot, especially a “dead” (black) one or one placed on the edge of the board, can cause the beam to fracture under the weight of a roof or floor.

How Many Cubic Metres in Spruce Boards?

Spruce solid wood is measured in cubes, so the price is indicated per cubic metre. How do you find out how many cubic metres are in one board? To calculate the volume of timber, the formula is used: V = a × b × c, where ‘a’ is length, ‘b’ is width, and ‘c’ is thickness.

Let’s determine the cubic volume of a board with the following characteristics: length – 3.4 m, width – 28 cm (0.28 m), and thickness – 45 mm (0.045 m). Substitute the values: 3.4 × 0.28 × 0.045 = 0.043 m³.

The cubic volume of boards with other dimensions is calculated using this principle.

How is Spruce Timber Price Determined?

The cost of lumber depends on the type (edged/unedged), grade, and dimensions. To determine the price of boards, refer to the formula: price per cube × Board V. As we have already established, the volume (cubic capacity) of lumber is determined by multiplying length, width, and thickness.

For clarity, let’s calculate the cost of edged and unedged spruce boards.

Example 1. Edged board: Extra grade, length 2.9 m, width 30 cm (0.3 m), thickness 38 mm (0.038 m), price per cube €549. Substitute the values: 549 × (2.9 × 0.3 × 0.038) = €18.12.

Example 2. Unedged board: 1st grade, length 3.2 m, width 34 cm (0.34 m), thickness 50 mm (0.05 m), price per m³ €399. Calculations are performed similarly to the first variant: 399 × (3.2 × 0.34 × 0.05) = €21.55.

How to Calculate a Cube of Spruce Boards?

How to understand: 1 cubic metre is how much? The number of boards that fit into a cubic metre depends on their dimensions. To count how many boards are in a cube, use the formula: N = 1 ÷ V, where N is pieces, and V is the board’s cubic volume.

The volume is determined in the same way: multiply length, width, and thickness.

Let’s find out how many boards 2.7 m long, 29 cm (0.29 m) wide, and 40 mm (0.04 m) thick are in 1 m³. Substitute and calculate: 1 ÷ (2.7 × 0.29 × 0.04) = 32.26. That is, 32 such boards will fit in a cubic metre.

Spruce Wood (Carpathian Spruce): Features

Spruce (Picea abies) is a coniferous species common in the Carpathians. The tree grows in ecologically clean areas, so it is actively used in construction and the production of interior items as a safe and easy-to-work-with material.

The light and soft wood is distinguished by moderate strength and elasticity. The density is 400-450 kg/m³. The structure is uniform, there is less resin compared to pine, and it has a delicate pattern.

Spruce wood is practically white, with a slight yellowish or pinkish tint. The solid wood is easily processed with hand and mechanical tools: it can be glued, sawn, sanded, milled, stained, and varnished. Spruce holds nails and screws well. The wood is distinguished by acoustic properties, contributing to sound absorption in the room. Furthermore, the species has a low coefficient of thermal conductivity.
