Grade 1 edged spruce timber is suitable for construction, joinery, and manufacturing tasks that require an optimal combination of material quality, structural strength, and cost-efficiency. Grade 1 permits minor colour variations and solitary intergrown sound knots while maintaining the strength of the solid wood. Kiln-dried spruce timber has a moisture content of 8–10% and is sold by the piece and wholesale. Self-collection from the warehouse and delivery across Ukraine are available.

Characteristics of Extra Grade Edged Spruce Boards

Board grade is a classification of timber based on natural wood features: the number and type of knots, presence of cracks or sapwood, and uniformity of texture and colour. The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material, not the basic physical-mechanical properties. Provided the species is the same and the moisture content is correct, the grade has almost no effect on the board’s strength.

Features of Extra (Highest) Grade Boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour changes are not permitted.
  • This is material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Edged Spruce Boards

When determining the lumber grade, the natural characteristics of the wood are evaluated: knots and their classifications, the potential presence of checks, shakes, or sapwood, as well as the uniformity of color and grain texture. This grading system primarily characterizes the visual and decorative qualities of the sawn timber. The grade has a negligible impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, provided that the boards are manufactured from the same species and feature the proper moisture content.

Features of Grade 1 Boards:

  • The ‘Gold Standard’ for joinery work: the surface is practically without peculiarities, but the price is more accessible.
  • Single live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • An optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture, where the natural wood grain is valued.

Advantages of Edged Spruce Boards

  1. Labour Saving and Quick Start. Edged boards allow you to skip the most laborious and ‘messy’ stage of primary preparation. You do not need to spend time removing bark and levelling edges on a bandsaw. The material is immediately ready for final cutting, planing, and gluing. This shortens the manufacturing cycle by 20-30%, allowing the workshop to produce more goods per unit of time.
  2. Maximum Useful Yield. When buying unedged boards, you pay for the total volume, a portion of which (bark, sapwood, edge defects) will go to waste. With edged boards, you only pay for the working material. You receive a predicted result: 90-95% of the purchased volume becomes the finished product.
  3. Preserving Tool Life. The bark of any tree often accumulates dust and sand, which acts as an abrasive. Processing unedged edges blurs planer knives and circular saws much faster. Working with clean edged boards extends the sharpening life of cutting tools and saves on machine maintenance.
  4. Accuracy of Calculations. You can accurately calculate the cost price of the future product (stairs, facades, worktops) even before work begins, without the risk of miscalculating the waste percentage.
  5. Convenient Storage. Edged material has clear width parameters, which simplifies stock control. Boards with processed edges take up 1.5 times less space in the warehouse than unedged boards.

Edged Spruce Board: Dimensions

The WoodWay Expert company offers high-quality edged boards made from selected and properly dried timber. The timber is stored in appropriate conditions. Our warehouse stocks solid boards in the following dimensions:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm;
  • Width: from 20 cm;
  • Length: 1-4.5 m.

Boards exceeding 3 metres in length incur a +20% charge on the listed price. Our specialists will help you select quality material for your project of any complexity and scale. An additional service of rough cutting the board for more convenient transport is provided.

Features of Kiln-Dried Spruce Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, wood moisture is brought to an average of 8–10% — an indicator optimal for interior use. A controlled temperature and humidity regime allows for a significant reduction in internal stresses within the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing: the risk of warping, twisting, or the formation of shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over a long period under stable operating conditions.
  • Biological Purity of the Material. The temperature regimes of kiln drying suppress the development of mould and fungi and destroy most insect larvae, including woodworm. As a result, the timber enters production in a biologically safe state, which is particularly important for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of Mechanical and Finish Processing. Dry wood has a stable structure, which directly affects the processing result. During milling and sawing, the tool works cleaner, and the edge comes out smooth, without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not ‘rise’, and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate better and deeper into the pores, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Areas of Application for Edged Spruce Boards

Spruce Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing hard-wearing worktops for writing desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid boards are also used for the production of bar counters, reception desks, shop counters, kitchen islands, and working surfaces.

Spruce Furniture Facades

Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor-standing or wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such items are used to furnish residential and public spaces. Timber furniture facades withstand everyday operational loads.

Elements of Internal Spruce Stairs

Timber is chosen for manufacturing turned balusters, newel posts, handrails, and risers. The material lends itself to turning, allowing craftsmen to carve complex details without the risk of chipping or cracking. The species is easily toned, so products made from this soft solid wood can be integrated into design projects of various styles.

Decorative Elements from Spruce Timber

Unique texture makes every item, whether a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder, an exclusive design object. The wood’s ability to easily undergo various types of finishing (toning, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to be integrated into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Spruce Timber (Carpathian Spruce): Main Characteristics

Spruce, or Carpathian Spruce, is a coniferous tree common in the ecologically clean regions of the Carpathians. The timber density is 400–450 kg/m³. This soft solid wood (1.3-1.6 on the Brinell scale) is easily processed. The material can be sawn, planed, drilled, sanded, stained, varnished, and painted. Spruce has good flexibility and elasticity. The wood is capable of withstanding significant bending loads without breaking.

Spruce has many small, hard, often dead (black) knots. When planing, these knots are so hard they can chip knife blades faster than the wood itself. Knots are prone to falling out during drying (in pine, knots are large but ‘live’ and intergrown).

Spruce timber contains less resin than pine. Resin is concentrated in separate pockets rather than permeating the entire mass. This is the best coniferous species for painting. Due to low resin content, paint lies evenly without the risk of yellow resin spots appearing.

The colour palette consists of yellowish-white shades; the sapwood and heartwood are practically identical in colour. The wood texture is uniform, even, with a fine grain. Logs with knots are frequently encountered.

Solid wood withstands low temperatures, making it suitable for construction. Due to its loose structure, spruce is the warmest tree among conifers. A house made of spruce holds heat better than one made of pine.

Coniferous timber has excellent acoustic properties. Musical instruments, as well as furniture, cladding, doors, stair rails, interior partitions, and interior decor, are produced from Spruce. Thanks to cladding walls and ceilings with spruce timber, it is possible to reduce noise load and improve the microclimate in the room.
