Unedged red oak timber of grade 1 has a moisture content (MC) of 8–10% after kiln drying. Solitary intergrown sound knots and minor variations in texture or colouring are permitted on the face. Joinery oak boards are used for manufacturing cabinet furniture, flooring, stairs, worktops, and doors. This sawn timber allows for manufacturing durable oak products while optimizing the budget. Oak boards are sold wholesale and by the piece. They can be picked up from the warehouse via self-collection. We ship across Ukraine.

Characteristics of Extra Grade Unedged Red Oak Board

Board grade is a classification of timber based on natural wood features: the number and type of knots, presence of cracks or sapwood, and uniformity of texture and colour. The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than basic physico-mechanical properties. Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the strength of the board.

Features of Extra (Premium) Grade boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour changes are not permitted.
  • This is material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of 1st Grade Unedged Red Oak Board

The concept of wood grading is based on classifying sawn timber by its visual characteristics. It takes into account the number and classifications of knots, the potential presence of checks, shakes, and sapwood, as well as the uniformity of the grain pattern and color shade. The main point to remember is that the grade primarily determines the aesthetic appearance rather than the structural reliability of the material. If boards of the same species have undergone proper kiln drying (KD), the mechanical strength of the sawn timber will be virtually identical, regardless of its grade.

Features of 1st Grade boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery work: a surface practically without features, but at a more accessible price.
  • Occasional live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • An optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture where the natural wood pattern is valued.

Advantages of Unedged Red Oak Board

  1. Maximum Economic Value. This is the most affordable type of timber. The cost per cubic metre of unedged board is significantly lower than that of edged board. This is because the price does not include the costs of edge trimming and the percentage of waste during production. It is the optimal choice for those with equipment for self-cutting or those seeking a budget solution.
  2. Unique “Live Edge” Aesthetics. In joinery, the unedged edge is not a defect but an aesthetic feature. Preserving the natural contour of the trunk allows for the creation of exclusive furniture in loft, eco, rustic, and country styles. It is from such boards that popular tables with epoxy resin fills, non-standard windowsills, bar counters, and bed headboards are made.
  3. Cutting Freedom. When working with edged board, the craftsman is limited by the strict geometry of the timber. Unedged Red Oak Board offers freedom: you decide how to work around a knot or crack yourself. This is particularly valuable when manufacturing curvilinear parts (such as chair legs or decorative elements), as it allows you to “extract” more useful raw material from the board.
  4. Versatility of Application. Depending on the species and grade, this material covers a wide spectrum of tasks. It ranges from construction (formwork, scaffolding) to design tasks (worktops with a live edge, bespoke windowsills).

Unedged Red Oak Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality unedged boards made from selected and correctly dried timber. The lumber is stored in appropriate conditions. Our warehouse stocks solid board in the following dimensions:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm;
  • Width: From 20 cm;
  • Length: 1–4.5 m.

Boards longer than 3 metres incur a +20% surcharge on the price listed in the price list. Our specialists will help you choose high-quality material for your project of any complexity and scale. An additional rough cutting service is available for more convenient transport.

Features of Kiln-Dried Red Oak Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, wood moisture is brought to an average of 8–10% — the optimal figure for interior use. A controlled regime of temperature and humidity significantly reduces internal stresses in the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing: the risk of warping, twisting, or shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over a long period under stable usage conditions.
  • Biological Purity of the Material. Temperature regimes of kiln drying inhibit the development of mould and fungi and destroy most insect larvae, including woodworm. As a result, the timber enters production in a biologically safe state, which is particularly important for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of Mechanical and Finish Processing. Dry wood has a stable structure, which directly influences the processing result. During milling and sawing, tools work cleaner, and the edge comes out smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “rise”, and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate deeper into the pores, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Applications of Unedged Red Oak Board

Red Oak Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing wear-resistant worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid board is also used for the production of tops for bar and reception counters, shop counters, kitchen islands, and work surfaces.

Red Oak Furniture Facades

Robust wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor and wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board last for decades. Such products are used to furnish residential and public premises, including offices. Furniture facades made from hardwoods withstand increased operational loads, which is crucial for high-traffic spaces.

Red Oak Flooring

Dry solid board is used for the production of various floor coverings. The timber can be applied as the top layer of parquet and engineered board. Additionally, natural wood is used to manufacture tongue-and-groove floorboards for indoor installation.

Internal Stairs in Red Oak

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Correctly treated wood resists abrasive wear in zones of the most intense traffic. The solid wood is subject to multiple sanding and refinishing cycles, which extends the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements from Red Oak Timber

The unique texture and distinct pattern of annual rings make every item an exclusive design object. This applies whether it is a solid wall panel or a miniature key holder. The wood’s ability to easily undergo various types of finishing (toning, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to be integrated into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Solid Red Oak: Features

Red Oak timber (Quercus rubra) has a density of approximately 680–750 kg/m³. The solid wood is characterised by high bending strength, and its Brinell hardness equals 4.2. In terms of performance indicators, this deciduous tree is comparable to White Oak, but this variety is distinguished by a more porous structure and a delicate pink or reddish hue.

The timber of Red (Northern, Canadian) Oak is coloured in light brown tones with a pink or reddish tint. Medullary rays are less pronounced than in White Oak. The textured solid wood features straight and noticeable fibres and large pores. The material can be sawn, sanded, glued, stained, painted, and varnished.

Commercial Red Oak timber is a material that is simple to work with, strong, wear-resistant, and aesthetic. Solid wood and lumber made from it are used in the furniture industry and in the manufacture of interior decoration, household, and decorative items.
