Unedged burr poplar timber of prime (extra) grade with a thickness of 32 mm and 52 mm is a valuable material for manufacturing designer furniture, bespoke worktops, decorative panels, and exclusive joinery with a live edge. The extra grade is characterized by a maximally distinct burr figure, which allows for manufacturing high value-added products. Joinery boards with a moisture content (MC) of 8–10% are available for self-collection from our warehouse, and we ship across Ukraine. Available for purchase from 1 piece.
Characteristics of Extra Grade Unedged Poplar Burl Board
Board grade is a classification of timber based on natural wood characteristics. This includes the quantity and type of knots, presence of cracks or sapwood, and uniformity of texture and colour. The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than basic physical-mechanical properties.
Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the board’s strength.
Features of Extra (Premium) Grade Boards:
- Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and homogenous colouring.
- Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour variations are not permitted.
- This is material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.
Characteristics of 1st Grade Unedged Poplar Burl Board
The concept of wood grading is based on classifying sawn timber by its visual characteristics. It takes into account the number and classifications of knots, the potential presence of checks, shakes, and sapwood, as well as the uniformity of the grain pattern and color shade. The main point to remember is that the grade primarily determines the aesthetic appearance rather than the structural reliability of the material. If boards of the same species have undergone proper kiln drying (KD), the mechanical strength of the sawn timber will be virtually identical, regardless of its grade.
Features of 1st Grade Boards:
- The “Gold Standard” for joinery works: the surface is practically without distinctive features, but the price is more accessible.
- Occasional live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
- An optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture where the natural pattern of the wood is appreciated.
Benefits of Unedged Poplar Burl Board
- Maximum Economic Benefit. This is the most affordable type of timber. The cost per cubic metre of unedged board is significantly lower than that of edged board. This is because the price does not include the costs of edging and the percentage of production waste. It is the optimal choice for those who have equipment for self-cutting or are seeking a budget-friendly solution.
- Unique “Live Edge” Aesthetics. In joinery, the waney edge is not a defect but an aesthetic feature. Preserving the natural contour of the trunk allows for the creation of exclusive furniture in loft, eco, rustic, and country styles. It is precisely from this board that popular river tables with epoxy resin, non-standard window sills, bar counters, and headboards are made.
- Freedom of Cutting. When working with edged board, the craftsman is limited by the strict geometry of the timber. Unedged board offers freedom: you decide how to navigate around a knot or crack yourself. This is particularly valuable when manufacturing curvilinear details (such as chair legs or decor elements), as it allows you to “extract” more useful raw material from the board.
- Versatility of Application. Depending on the species and grade, this material covers a wide range of tasks. These range from construction (formwork, scaffolding) to design tasks (worktops with a live edge, bespoke window sills).
Unedged Poplar Burl Board: Dimensions
WoodWay Expert offers high-quality unedged boards made from selected and properly dried timber. The timber is stored in appropriate conditions. Our warehouse stocks solid board in the following dimensions:
- Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm;
- Width: From 20 cm;
- Length: 1–4.5 m.
Boards exceeding 3 metres in length incur a +20% surcharge on the price listed in the price list. Our specialists will help you select quality material for your project of any complexity and scale. An additional service of rough cutting the board is available for more convenient transport.
Features of Kiln-Dried Poplar Burl Boards
- Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, wood moisture is brought to an average of 8–10%. This is the optimal figure for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses in the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing. The risk of warping, distortion, or the formation of shrinkage cracks is significantly lower.
- Biological Purity of the Material. Temperature regimes in kiln drying suppress the development of mould and fungi. They also destroy the majority of insect pest larvae, including woodworm. As a result, the timber arrives for work in a biologically safe state, which is particularly important for furniture and joinery production.
- Quality of Mechanical and Finish Processing. Dry timber has a stable structure, directly influencing the processing result. During milling and sawing, the tool works more cleanly, and the edge comes out smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “rise”, and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate the pores better and deeper, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.
Areas of Application for Unedged Poplar Burl Board
Worktops made from Burl Poplar
Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing wear-resistant worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid board is also used for the production of tops for bars and reception desks, counters, kitchen islands, and work surfaces.
Furniture Facades from Burl Poplar
Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor or wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board last for decades. Such items are used to furnish both residential and public premises. Furniture facades made from timber withstand day-to-day wear and tear.
Elements of Internal Stairs from Burl Poplar
This timber is chosen for manufacturing shaped balusters, newel posts, handrails, and risers. The material lends itself well to turning, allowing craftsmen to carve complex details without the risk of chipping or cracking. The species is easily toned, so items made from this soft solid wood can be incorporated into design projects of various styles.
Decorative Elements from Burl Poplar Timber
The unique texture makes every item an exclusive designer object. This applies whether it is a solid wall panel or a miniature key holder. The wood’s ability to easily accept various types of finish processing (toning, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to be integrated into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.
Black (Burl/Bird’s Eye) Poplar Timber: Features
Poplar Burl is an exclusive decorative material. It is not a separate biological species, but rather wood with growths (burls) on the trunk of the black poplar. Black poplar solid wood is distinguished by a knotty structure. In places where burl growths form, the fibres become dense and intertwined, forming a swirling pattern.
Bird’s eye poplar timber is a valuable decorative material used in the furniture industry and for manufacturing decor and interior finishes.
Density: low and non-uniform, amounting to approximately 400-500 kg/m³. The main mass of the wood is very soft (like lime or alder) and is easily scratched with a fingernail. The “eyes” (centres of burl clusters) are significantly harder. This difference in hardness creates difficulties during sanding: the soft part sands away faster.
Poplar burl is brittle. Unlike ordinary poplar, which can be bent, burl solid wood lacks elasticity for bending. The wood glues, saws, sands, tones, and varnishes well. Areas with tangled fibres are harder, so well-sharpened tools must be used for sawing.
The decorative solid wood acts like a sponge. It absorbs a colossal amount of varnish, oil, or primer. The first layers of coating often “disappear” into the wood without a trace.
Varies from light cream to golden brown. Burl veins are darker: brown, reddish, or black. The pattern of the solid wood resembles “eyes” on a marble background. This unique material is used to create exclusive and designer products.
