1 grade edged oak board is a commercial lumber featuring a virtually uniform texture and a minimal number of sound, tight knots. These premium kiln-dried oak boards (8–10% moisture content) are perfectly suitable for manufacturing reliable furniture, staircases, and doors. Character grade wood combines exceptional structural strength with a moderate price point, directly reducing the production cost of finished goods. The use of these edged oak boards ensures a high usable material yield for manufacturers. Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm. Delivery across Ukraine and ex-works warehouse pickup are fully available.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Oak Edged Board

When determining the lumber grade, the natural characteristics of the wood are evaluated: knots and their classifications, the potential presence of checks, shakes, or sapwood, as well as the uniformity of color and grain texture. This grading system primarily characterizes the visual and decorative qualities of the sawn timber. The grade has a negligible impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, provided that the boards are manufactured from the same species and feature the proper moisture content (MC).

Features of Grade 1 Boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery work: the surface is practically free of features, but the price is more accessible.
  • Occasional live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • The optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture where the natural wood grain is valued.

Advantages of Oak Edged Board

  1. Time savings and a quick start. Edged board allows you to skip the most labour-intensive and messy stage of primary preparation. You do not need to waste time removing bark or levelling edges on a bandsaw. The material is immediately ready for precise cutting, planing, and gluing. This reduces the production cycle by 20-30%, allowing the workshop to produce more output per unit of time.
  2. Maximum yield coefficient. When buying unedged timber, you pay for the total volume, a portion of which (bark, sapwood, edge defects) will become waste. In the edged board format, you pay only for the working material. You receive a predictable result: 90-95% of the purchased volume becomes the finished product.
  3. Preservation of tool life. The bark of any tree often accumulates dust and grit, which acts as an abrasive. Processing unedged timber dulls planer knives and circular saws much faster. By working with clean European Walnut edged board, you extend the life of your cutting tools’ edges and save on machine maintenance.
  4. Accuracy of calculations. You can accurately calculate the cost price of the future product (stairs, facades, worktops) even before work begins, without the risk of miscalculating the waste percentage.
  5. Convenient storage. Edged material has clear width parameters, which simplifies stock control. Boards with processed edges take up 1.5 times less space in the warehouse than unedged timber.

Oak Edged Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality edged boards made from selected and properly dried timber. The timber is stored in appropriate conditions. We have solid boards in the following dimensions in stock:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm;
  • Width: From 20 cm;
  • Length: 1-4.5 m.

Boards longer than 3 m incur a +20% surcharge on the price listed in the price list. Our specialists will help you choose quality material for your project of any complexity and scale. An additional rough cutting service is available for more convenient transport.

Features of Kiln-Dried Oak Boards

  • Dimensional stability. During kiln drying, the wood moisture content is brought to an average of 8–10% — the optimal figure for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses in the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing: the risk of warping, twisting, or the formation of shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over a long period under stable usage conditions.
  • Biological purity of the material. The temperature regimes of kiln drying suppress the development of mould and fungi and destroy most insect larvae, particularly woodworm. As a result, the timber arrives for work in a biologically safe state, which is especially important for furniture and joinery production.
  • Quality of mechanical and finish processing. Dry timber has a stable structure, which directly influences the processing result. During routing and sawing, the tool works cleaner, and the edge comes out smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “raise,” and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate the pores better and deeper, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Areas of Application for Oak Edged Board

European Oak

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing wear-resistant worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid board is also used for producing tops for bar counters, reception desks, counters, kitchen islands, and general working surfaces.

Oak Furniture Facades

Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such items are used to furnish both residential and public spaces, including offices. Furniture facades made from hardwood species withstand increased operational loads, which is vital for high-traffic areas.

Oak Flooring

Dry solid board is used for the production of various floor coverings. The timber can be applied as the top layer of parquet and engineered boards. Additionally, natural wood is used to manufacture tongue-and-groove floorboards for indoor installation.

Internal Stairs made of Oak

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Properly treated timber resists abrasive wear and friction in zones of the most intense traffic. Solid wood is subject to repeated scraping and refinishing, which extends the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements from Oak Timber

The unique texture and distinct pattern of growth rings make every item an exclusive design object. This applies whether it is a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder. The wood’s ability to easily undergo various types of finishing (tinting, varnishing, brushing) allows the decor to integrate into any style, from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

European Oak Timber: Key Characteristics and Features

European oak (Quercus robur) is widespread throughout Europe, from the Atlantic coast to the Urals, as well as in parts of Asia Minor and the Caucasus. In Ukraine, this species is considered one of the primary commercial hardwood and forest-forming species.

Oak wood is classified as a medium-to-high density hardwood. Due to its high resistance to mechanical impact, the material offers exceptional wear resistance. Its air-dry density typically ranges between 650–800 kg/m³. Brinell hardness ranges from 3.7 to 3.9 HB. Oak exhibits superior resistance to abrasion, making it perfectly suited for heavy-duty commercial and residential flooring applications.

The color spectrum of the heartwood ranges from light yellow to deep yellow-brown and dark brown. Over time and under the influence of UV light, the heartwood darkens slightly. The narrow zone of sapwood is clearly demarcated from the heartwood and is light yellow or whitish in color. The wood grain is predominantly straight, though it can be slightly wavy depending on growth conditions. Large medullary rays are clearly visible on the radial cut, while characteristic parabolic patterns of growth rings appear on the tangential cut.

Due to its high density and hardness, oak requires the use of high-quality, sharp industrial tools. The solid timber displays excellent machining, sanding, and turning properties. Thanks to its optimal elasticity, oak is perfectly suited for steam bending applications. The material has excellent nail and screw-holding capacity, though pre-drilling is highly recommended to prevent splitting. Due to its high tannin content, oak timber can discolor when in contact with iron and alkaline compounds. This specific characteristic is utilized in artificial aging techniques, such as ammonia fuming or creating a bog-oak effect. Oak is easily stained, oiled, and waxed for a premium finish.
