Grade 1 edged maple timber with a thickness of 32 mm and 52 mm is dimensionally stable, split-resistant, and easy to sand thanks to proper kiln drying to a joinery moisture content (MC) of 8–10%. Minor colour variations and solitary small intergrown sound knots are permitted. Maple boards are suitable for the serial production of furniture, interior doors, stairs, and parquet. Self-collection from our warehouse is available, and we ship across Ukraine.

Characteristics of Extra Grade Edged Maple Board

Board grade is a classification of timber based on natural wood features. This includes the number and type of knots, the presence of cracks or sapwood, and the uniformity of texture and colour.

The grade primarily defines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than its basic physical and mechanical properties. Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the strength of the board.

Features of Extra (Premium) Grade boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour variations are not permitted.
  • This is the material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Edged Maple Board

When determining the lumber grade, the natural characteristics of the wood are evaluated: knots and their classifications, the potential presence of checks, shakes, or sapwood, as well as the uniformity of color and grain texture. This grading system primarily characterizes the visual and decorative qualities of the sawn timber. The grade has a negligible impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, provided that the boards are manufactured from the same species and feature the proper moisture content (MC).

Features of Grade 1 boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery work: the surface is practically free of features, but the price is more accessible.
  • Single live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • The optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture, where the natural grain of the wood is appreciated.

Advantages of Edged Maple Board

  1. Saves time and ensures a quick start. Edged board allows you to skip the most labour-intensive and “dirty” stage of primary preparation. You do not need to spend time removing bark or levelling edges on a bandsaw. The material is immediately ready for final cutting, planing, and gluing. This shortens the production cycle by 20–30%, allowing your workshop to produce more units per hour.
  1. Maximum useful yield. When buying unedged (waney edge) timber, you pay for the total volume. A significant portion of this (bark, sapwood, edge defects) ends up as waste. With the edged board format, you pay only for working material. You receive a predictable result: 90–95% of the purchased volume becomes a finished product.
  1. Preserves tool life. The bark of any tree often accumulates dust and sand, which acts as an abrasive. Processing unedged timber dulls planer knives and circular saw blades much faster. By working with clean edged timber, you extend the lifespan of your cutting tools and save on machinery maintenance.
  1. Accuracy of calculations. You can precisely calculate the cost price of a future product (steps, facades, worktops) before work begins. This eliminates the risk of miscalculating waste percentages.
  1. Convenient storage. Edged material has clear width parameters, which simplifies stock management. Boards with processed edges take up 1.5 times less space in the warehouse than unedged timber.

Edged Maple Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality edged boards made from selected and properly dried timber. The timber is stored in appropriate conditions. We have solid maple boards in stock with the following dimensions:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm;
  • Width: from 20 cm;
  • Length: 1–4.5 m.

Please note: Boards longer than 3 metres incur a +20% surcharge on the price listed in the price list. Our specialists will help you select quality material for projects of any complexity and scale. We also provide a rough cutting service to facilitate easier transport.

Features of Kiln-Dried Maple Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, the moisture content of the wood is brought to an average of 8–10%. This is the optimal figure for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses in the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing: the risk of warping, twisting, or shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over time under stable conditions.
  • Biological Purity. The temperature regimes of kiln drying inhibit the development of mould and fungi. They also destroy most insect larvae, particularly woodworm. As a result, the timber enters production in a biologically safe state. This is especially important for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of Machining and Finishing. Dry wood has a stable structure, which directly affects the processing result. During milling and sawing, tools work cleaner, and the edge comes out smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “raise”, and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate the pores better and deeper. This ensures reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Applications of Edged Maple Board

Maple Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for making hard-wearing worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid board is also used for producing tops for bar counters, reception desks, shop counters, kitchen islands, and work surfaces.

Maple Furniture Facades

Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor or wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such items are used to furnish residential and public spaces, including offices. Furniture facades made from hardwood species withstand increased operational loads, which is vital for high-traffic areas.

Maple Flooring

Dry solid board is used for the production of various floor coverings. Timber can be used for the top layer of parquet and engineered boards. Natural wood is also used to manufacture tongue and groove floorboards for interior installation.

Internal Maple Stairs

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Properly treated wood resists abrasive wear in zones of the most intense traffic. Solid wood can be sanded and refinished multiple times, which extends the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements from Maple Wood

The unique texture and inimitable pattern of growth rings make every item an exclusive design object. This applies whether it is a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder. The ability of the wood to easily accept various types of finishing (toning, lacquering, brushing) allows decor to be integrated into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Maple Timber: Key Characteristics

Maple (Acer) is a deciduous tree belonging to the hardwood species. Maple stands are found in Central Europe and Southwest Asia. About 20 species of maple are found in the forests of Ukraine. The distribution area covers the Forest-Steppe, the Carpathians, and the Cis-Carpathians. Maple can reach a height of 20–35 m, with a trunk diameter of 1–1.5 m.

Maple is a hard (3.5 on the Brinell scale) and dense (600 kg/m³) wood, distinguished by good bending strength. Maple timber is elastic, viscous, and dries without problems. The cut is smooth and even, with a silky sheen and clearly visible growth rings. The natural wood pattern is noticeable but not high-contrast. The colour range of maple consists of light tones: white, light beige, cream, and sand.

Important Note: Maple wood contains sugars. When using dull saws or cutters, or if the tool stops in one place, the wood burns. This leaves dark black-brown marks that are difficult to sand out. Always use sharp saws, high rotation speeds, and a fast feed rate for the material.

Maple is a closed-pore species, so it sands to a very smooth surface. However, maple is very difficult to stain. Due to varying fibre density, it absorbs pigment unevenly (blotchiness). Specialists recommend using sealers or conditioners before staining, toning via spraying, or leaving the natural colour under a clear varnish.
