Prime (extra) grade edged beech timber with a thickness of 32 mm and 52 mm is a flawless quality solid wood with a moisture content (MC) of 8–10%. These sawn timber products guarantee maximum dimensional stability of components for manufacturers of furniture, parquet, and stairs. Due to the absence of defects, knots, or checks, beech boards ensure virtually waste-free production. Available for self-collection from our warehouse or fast shipping across Ukraine.

Characteristics of Extra Grade Edged Beech

Board grade is a classification of timber based on natural wood characteristics: the number and type of knots, presence of cracks or sapwood, and uniformity of texture and colour. The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than its basic physical-mechanical properties. Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the strength of the board.

Features of Extra (Premium) Grade Boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouration.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour variations are not permitted.
  • This is the material of choice for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Edged Beech

When determining the lumber grade, the natural characteristics of the wood are evaluated: knots and their classifications, the potential presence of checks, shakes, or sapwood, as well as the uniformity of color and grain texture. This grading system primarily characterizes the visual and decorative qualities of the sawn timber. The grade has a negligible impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, provided that the boards are manufactured from the same species and feature the proper moisture content (MC).

Features of Grade 1 Boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery work: a surface practically devoid of defects, but at a more accessible price point.
  • Occasional live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • The optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture, where the natural grain of the wood is appreciated.

Advantages of Edged Beech Timber

  1. Time Efficiency and Quick Start. Edged timber allows you to skip the most labour-intensive and messy stage of primary preparation. You do not need to spend time removing bark or levelling edges on a band saw. The material is immediately ready for precise cutting, planing, and gluing. This reduces the production cycle by 20–30%, allowing your workshop to produce more output per unit of time.
  2. Maximum Yield Coefficient. When buying unedged timber, you pay for the total volume, a portion of which (bark, sapwood, edge defects) will become waste. With the edged format, you pay only for workable material. You receive a predictable result: 90–95% of the purchased volume becomes a finished product.
  3. Preservation of Tool Life. Tree bark often accumulates dust and grit, which act as an abrasive. Processing unedged timber dulls planer knives and circular saws significantly faster. By working with clean, edged boards, you extend the lifespan of your cutting tools and save on machinery maintenance.
  4. Calculation Accuracy. You can precisely calculate the cost price of the future product (stair treads, facades, worktops) before work begins, without the risk of misjudging waste percentages.
  5. Convenient Storage. Edged material has clear width parameters, simplifying stock control. Boards with processed edges take up 1.5 times less space in the warehouse compared to unedged timber.

Edged Beech Timber: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality edged boards manufactured from selected and properly dried timber. The timber is stored in appropriate conditions. We stock solid boards in the following dimensions:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm;
  • Width: from 20 cm;
  • Length: 1–4.5 m.

Boards exceeding 3 metres in length incur a +20% charge on the listed price. Our specialists will help you select quality material for projects of any complexity and scale. An additional rough cutting service is available to facilitate easier transport.

Features of Kiln-Dried Beech Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, the moisture content of the wood is brought to an average of 8–10%—the optimal indicator for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses within the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing: the risk of warping, twisting, or shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over long periods under stable operating conditions.
  • Biological Purity. The temperature regimes of kiln drying inhibit the development of mould and fungi and destroy the majority of insect larvae, particularly woodworm. As a result, the timber enters production in a biologically safe state, which is particularly important for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of Mechanical and Finishing Processing. Dry wood has a stable structure, which directly impacts the processing result. During milling and sawing, tools work more cleanly, and the edge remains smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “raise,” and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate the pores better and deeper, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Areas of Application for Edged Beech Timber

Beech Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing wear-resistant worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid boards are also used for the production of tops for bar counters, reception desks, shop counters, kitchen islands, and working surfaces.

Beech Furniture Facades

High-quality wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor-standing or wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such items are used to furnish residential and public spaces, including offices. Furniture facades made from hardwood withstand increased operational loads, which is crucial for spaces with high footfall.

Beech Flooring

Dry solid timber is used for the production of various floor coverings. The material can be applied as the top layer of parquet and engineered boards. Additionally, natural wood is used to manufacture tongue-and-groove flooring boards for interior installation.

Internal Beech Staircases

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Properly treated timber resists abrasive wear and abrasion in areas of the most intense traffic. Solid wood is suitable for repeated scraping and refinishing, which extends the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements from Beech Wood

The unique texture and distinct pattern of annual rings make every item—whether a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder—an exclusive design object. The ability of the wood to easily accept various types of finishing (tinting, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to be integrated into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Beech Wood: Main Characteristics

Beech (Fagus) is a deciduous tree common in Europe, Asia, and America. In Ukraine, Beech grows in the Carpathians. A tree with a broad crown and smooth, light-grey bark, it grows up to 50 m, while the trunk diameter can reach 3 m.

The structure of Beech timber is dense and uniform. Annual rings and scattered pores are clearly visible on the cut. The wood of young Beech is practically monochrome (beige tones with brown or pinkish inclusions predominate). Trees older than 80 years are distinguished by a dark red heartwood.

At 12% moisture content, the density ranges between 700–750 kg/m³. Beech is a heavy, solid timber. Hardness according to the Brinell classification is 3.8 – 4.0 HB. Beech solid wood possesses excellent wear resistance. The species withstands friction and point loads, which is why it is used for manufacturing stairs, thresholds, parquet, and children’s furniture, where impact resistance is important.

Beech is a champion among industrial species for its bending capability. Under the influence of steam, its fibres become plastic, allowing the material to be bent at significant angles without breaking. After drying, the shape is well preserved. It is from Beech that the famous “Vienna chairs” and bent frames for upholstered furniture are made.

The wood is hard but cuts cleanly and sands well. Solid wood is easily tinted to resemble Walnut, Cherry, or Mahogany. Pigment lays down evenly without spots. Beech has no odour and does not emit resins, so it is traditionally used to make kitchen utensils (chopping boards, spatulas) and toys.
