Ash edged board 32/52 mm, grade 1, 8-10%

Ash · Edged · 32/52 mm · Grade 1

Joinery edged ash timber of grade 1 is a kiln-dried sawn timber product with a moisture content (MC) of 8–10%. Solitary intergrown sound knots and natural colour transitions are permitted. The boards are selected for manufacturing reliable furniture frames, doors, and flooring. Available thicknesses: 32 mm and 52 mm; please check details with our sales department. Dispatch from 1 piece. Self-collection from the warehouse and shipping across Ukraine are available.

Characteristics of Extra Grade Edged Ash Boards

Timber grade is a classification based on natural wood features. This includes the number and type of knots, presence of cracks or sapwood, and uniformity of texture and colour. The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than basic physical-mechanical properties. Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the strength of the board.

Features of Extra (Premium) Grade Boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour changes are not permitted.
  • This is the material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Edged Ash Boards

When determining the lumber grade, the natural characteristics of the wood are evaluated: knots and their classifications, the potential presence of checks, shakes, or sapwood, as well as the uniformity of color and grain texture. This grading system primarily characterizes the visual and decorative qualities of the sawn timber. The grade has a negligible impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, provided that the boards are manufactured from the same species and feature the proper moisture content (MC).

Features of Grade 1 Boards:

  • The “Golden Standard” for joinery work: a surface practically without peculiarities, but at a more accessible price.
  • Single live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • An optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture where the natural wood grain is valued.

Advantages of Edged Ash Boards

  1. Saving labour time and a quick start. Edged board allows you to skip the most labour-intensive and messy stage of initial preparation. You do not need to spend time removing bark or levelling edges on a bandsaw. The material is immediately ready for final cutting, planing, and gluing. This shortens the production cycle by 20-30%, allowing the workshop to produce more units per hour.
  2. Maximum useful yield coefficient. When buying unedged timber, you pay for the total volume, a portion of which (bark, sapwood, edge defects) will become waste. With an edged board, you pay only for the working material. You receive a predictable result: 90-95% of the purchased volume becomes a finished product.
  3. Preservation of tool resources. Tree bark often accumulates dust and sand, which act as an abrasive. Processing unedged timber dulls planer knives and circular saw blades much faster. Working with clean edged timber extends the life of your cutting tools and saves on machine maintenance.
  4. Accuracy of calculations. You can precisely calculate the cost price of a future product (steps, facades, worktops) even before work begins. This eliminates the risk of miscalculating waste percentages.
  5. Convenient storage. Edged material has clear width parameters, which simplifies stock control. Boards with processed edges take up 1.5 times less space in the warehouse than unedged timber.

Edged Ash Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality edged boards made from selected and correctly dried timber. The timber is stored in proper conditions. We have solid boards in the following dimensions available in our warehouse:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm;
  • Width: From 20 cm;
  • Length: 1–4.5 m.

Please note: Boards longer than 3 metres incur a +20% surcharge on the listed price. Our specialists will help you select quality material for projects of any complexity and scale. We also provide an additional rough cutting service for more convenient transport.

Features of Kiln-Dried Ash Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, the moisture content of the wood is brought to an average of 8–10%. This is the optimal indicator for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses in the solid wood. Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing. The risk of warping, twisting, or shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over time under stable usage conditions.
  • Biological Purity of the Material. The temperature regimes of kiln drying inhibit the development of mould and fungi. They also destroy most insect larvae, including woodworm. As a result, the timber arrives for work in a biologically safe state, which is especially important for furniture and joinery production.
  • Quality of Mechanical and Finish Processing. Dry timber has a stable structure, which directly affects the processing result. During milling and sawing, tools work more cleanly, and the edge comes out smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “raise”, and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate deeper into the pores. This ensures reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Areas of Application for Edged Ash Timber

Ash Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing wear-resistant worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid boards are also used for the production of bar counters, reception desks, shop counters, kitchen islands, and working surfaces.

Ash Furniture Facades

High-quality wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor or wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such items are used to furnish residential and public spaces, including offices. Furniture facades made from hardwood withstand increased operational loads, which is crucial for high-traffic areas.

Ash Flooring

Dry solid board is used for the production of various floor coverings. The timber can be applied as the top layer of parquet and engineered boards. Natural wood is also used to manufacture tongue-and-groove flooring laid indoors.

Internal Ash Stairs

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Correctly treated timber resists abrasive wear in areas of the most intense traffic. Solid wood is subject to repeated sanding and refinishing, which extends the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements from Ash Timber

Unique texture and an inimitable pattern of growth rings make every item an exclusive design object. This applies whether it is a solid wall panel or a miniature key holder. The ability of the wood to easily undergo various types of finishing (tinting, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to integrate into any style. This ranges from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic styles.

Ash Timber: Key Features

Ash (Fraxinus) is common throughout Europe, including Ukraine. This deciduous tree grows up to 20–35 metres, with a trunk diameter reaching 1–2 metres.

Ash belongs to the hardwood species. The heartwood may differ from the sapwood, but logs with practically uniform colouring are found. The colour palette includes grey, white, and yellow shades. The central part may acquire darker tones.

Ash timber is porous with a coarse texture. The cut surface is smooth and matte. The pattern is clearly visible: the design is formed by thin heart-shaped rays and growth rings. Fibres are most often straight, although boards with figured grain can sometimes be found.

At a standard moisture content of 12%, the density fluctuates between 680–750 kg/m³. By this indicator, ash is identical to oak, and sometimes even heavier. Brinell hardness is 4.0–4.1 HB. Ash surpasses oak (3.7–3.9 HB) in surface hardness. The solid wood better resists dents from heels or falling heavy objects.

It is the strongest species regarding tension and impact. Ash is capable of absorbing impact energy, which is why baseball bats, hammer and axe handles, and gymnastics bars are made from it.

Ash is the best species for bending among hardwoods. The wood has long and straight fibres, which become very pliable under the influence of steam. Ash allows for the creation of complex bent elements (chair backs, sports equipment, rims) while maintaining structural strength after drying.

It cuts, planes, glues, and tints easily. Sanding requires a thorough approach. Large pores are either smoothed with pore fillers or left as is.
