Edged American walnut timber (grade 1) is an optimal material for the serial and custom production of furniture, interior doors, and wall paneling. Available thicknesses: 28 mm, 38 mm, and 52 mm. The wood texture permits a minimal number of sound knots that highlight the wood’s authenticity. Thanks to proper kiln drying to an optimal moisture content (MC) of 8–10%, grade 1 timber demonstrates high dimensional stability and strength, responding excellently to surface finishing.

Characteristics of Extra Grade American Walnut Edged Board

Grade is the classification of lumber based on natural timber features: the number and type of knots, presence of cracks or sapwood, and uniformity of texture and colour. The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than basic physical-mechanical properties.

Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the board’s strength.

Features of Extra (Premium) Grade boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour variations are not permitted.
  • This is the material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 American Walnut Edged Board

When determining the lumber grade, the natural characteristics of the wood are evaluated: knots and their classifications, the potential presence of checks, shakes, or sapwood, as well as the uniformity of color and grain texture. This grading system primarily characterizes the visual and decorative qualities of the sawn timber. The grade has a negligible impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, provided that the boards are manufactured from the same species and feature the proper moisture content (MC).

Features of Grade 1 boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery work: a surface practically free of features, but at a more accessible price.
  • Isolated live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • An optimal choice for worktops, staircases, parquet, and cabinet furniture where the natural pattern of the wood is valued.

Advantages of American Walnut Edged Board

  1. Labour Saving and Rapid Start. Edged boards allow you to skip the most labour-intensive and messy stage of initial preparation. You do not need to spend time removing bark or levelling edges on a band saw.

The material is immediately ready for precise cutting, planing, and gluing. This shortens the production cycle by 20–30%, allowing your workshop to manufacture more products per unit of time.

  1. Maximum Yield Coefficient. When buying unedged timber, you pay for the total volume, a portion of which (bark, sapwood, edge defects) becomes waste.

With American Walnut edged board, you pay only for usable material. You receive a predictable result: 90–95% of the purchased volume becomes the finished product.

  1. Preserving Tool Life. Tree bark often accumulates dust and sand, acting as an abrasive. Processing unedged timber dulls planer knives and circular saws much faster.

By working with clean edged boards, you extend the life of your cutting tools’ edges and save on machinery maintenance.

  1. Calculation Accuracy. You can precisely calculate the cost price of a future product (steps, facades, worktops) before work begins. There is no risk of miscalculating the waste percentage.
  1. Convenient Storage. Edged material has clear width parameters, simplifying stock control. Boards with processed edges take up 1.5 times less space in the warehouse compared to unedged timber.

American Walnut Edged Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality edged boards manufactured from selected and correctly dried timber. The lumber is stored in appropriate conditions. Our warehouse stocks solid boards in the following dimensions:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm
  • Width: From 20 cm
  • Length: 1–4.5 m

Boards longer than 3 metres incur a +20% surcharge on the listed price list. Our specialists will help you select quality material for projects of any complexity and scale. We also provide an additional rough cut service for more convenient transport.

Features of Kiln Dried American Walnut Boards

  • Dimensional Stability. During kiln drying, wood moisture is brought to an average of 8–10%—the optimal figure for interior use. Controlled temperature and humidity regimes significantly reduce internal stresses in the solid wood.

Consequently, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing. The risk of warping, twisting, or shrinkage cracks forming is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over long periods under stable conditions.

  • Biological Purity. The temperature regimes of kiln drying inhibit the development of mould and fungi. They also destroy most insect larvae, including woodworm. As a result, the lumber arrives for work in a biologically safe state, which is particularly important for furniture and joinery production.
  • Mechanical and Finishing Quality. Dry timber has a stable structure, directly influencing processing results. During milling and sawing, tools work cleaner, and edges come out smooth without excessive fuzz or chipping.

Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “raise,” and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate deeper into the pores. This ensures reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Areas of Application for American Walnut Edged Board

American Walnut Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing hard-wearing worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid boards are also used for producing bar tops, reception desks, counters, kitchen islands, and work surfaces.

American Walnut Furniture Facades

Substantial wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor or wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such items are used to furnish residential and public spaces, including offices. Hardwood furniture facades withstand increased wear and tear, which is vital for high-traffic areas.

American Walnut Flooring

Dry solid board is used for producing various floor coverings. The lumber can be applied as the top layer of parquet and engineered boards. Natural timber is also used to manufacture tongue-and-groove floorboards laid indoors.

Internal Staircases in American Walnut

The high density of hardwoods guarantees the structural strength of stair flights. Correctly treated timber resists abrasive wear in zones of intense traffic. Solid wood is subject to repeated sanding and refinishing, extending the service life of wooden stairs.

Decorative Elements in American Walnut

Unique texture and an inimitable ring pattern make every item an exclusive designer object. Whether a massive wall panel or a miniature key holder, the wood stands out.

The ability of the timber to easily accept various types of finishing (staining, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to integrate into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Solid American (Black) Walnut: Key Characteristics

American Walnut (Juglans nigra) is the most common name for the tree, native to North America. It is also known as Eastern Black Walnut.

The average tree height is 30–45 m. The texture of the solid wood is even and smooth. This exotic species has narrow sapwood, coloured in light brown, honey tones. The heartwood is distinguished by a richer gamut.

The palette is dominated by deep dark brown, chocolate, and black tones, with occasional red inclusions. American Walnut timber is notable for its expressive pattern.

Solid American Walnut belongs to the premium class. The material is prized by cabinetmakers as it combines aesthetic qualities with excellent performance characteristics.

At 12% moisture content, the density is approximately 610–660 kg/m³. Furniture made from American Walnut is lighter than oak. The hardness of the solid wood on the Brinell scale is 4. The species is resistant to everyday wear, making it suitable for flooring and worktops.

American Walnut has a low shrinkage coefficient, ensuring product stability. The timber possesses good shock resistance and is not brittle. The solid wood responds excellently to steam bending. This makes the species an optimal material for creating curved chair elements (backs, armrests) and complex architectural forms.

The wood is easily processed with both hand and mechanical tools. Black Walnut provides a clean cut, polishes to a shine, and bonds well with joinery glues (PVA, PUR). It holds screws and nails well and is not prone to splitting when correctly pre-drilled.

The timber easily absorbs oils and waxes. When using water-based varnishes, the colour may become slightly “cooler” (greyish). Therefore, primers with a “warming” effect are recommended to preserve the warm undertone.
