Grade 1 edged alder timber has a moisture content of 8–10% thanks to kiln drying. Minimal natural colour variations and solitary intergrown sound knots are permitted. This is an optimal sawn timber product for the manufacturing of furniture fronts, doors, worktops, and partitions. Please check the specifications of available boards. Self-collection and shipping across Ukraine are available.

Characteristics of Extra Grade Alder Edged Board

The board grade is a classification of timber based on the natural features of the wood: the number and type of knots, the presence of cracks or sapwood, and the uniformity of texture and colour. The grade primarily determines the aesthetic qualities of the material rather than basic physical-mechanical properties. Given the same species and correct moisture content, the grade has almost no effect on the strength of the board.

Features of Extra (Premium) Grade boards:

  • Elite timber with a clean surface: uniform texture and consistent colouring.
  • Knots, sapwood, cracks, or sharp colour changes are not permitted.
  • This is material for furniture facades, wall panels, and other interior items where visual perfection is required.

Characteristics of Grade 1 Alder Edged Board

When determining the lumber grade, the natural characteristics of the wood are evaluated: knots and their classifications, the potential presence of checks, shakes, or sapwood, as well as the uniformity of color and grain texture. This grading system primarily characterizes the visual and decorative qualities of the sawn timber. The grade has a negligible impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, provided that the boards are manufactured from the same species and feature the proper moisture content (MC).

Features of Grade 1 boards:

  • The “Gold Standard” for joinery work: the surface is practically feature-free, but the price is more accessible.
  • Isolated live (light) knots of small diameter and minor natural shade variations are permitted.
  • The optimal choice for worktops, stairs, parquet, and cabinet furniture, where the natural wood pattern is valued.

Benefits of Alder Edged Board

  1. Saving working time and a quick start. Edged board allows you to skip the most labour-intensive and “messy” stage of initial preparation. You do not need to spend time removing bark and levelling edges on a band saw. The material is immediately ready for precise cutting, jointing, and gluing. This shortens the production cycle by 20–30%, allowing the workshop to produce more units per hour.
  2. Maximum yield coefficient. When buying unedged board, you pay for the total volume, a part of which (bark, sapwood, edge defects) will go to waste. In the edged board format, you pay only for the working material. You receive a predictable result: 90–95% of the purchased volume becomes the finished product.
  3. Preservation of tool resources. The bark of any tree often accumulates dust and sand, which act as an abrasive. Processing an unedged edge blunts planer knives and circular saws significantly faster. Working with clean edged board extends the life of the cutting tool’s edge and saves on machine maintenance.
  4. Calculation accuracy. You can accurately calculate the cost price of the future product (treads, facades, worktops) even before work begins, without the risk of miscalculating the waste percentage.
  5. Convenient storage. Edged material has clear width parameters, which simplifies warehouse accounting. Boards with processed edges take up 1.5 times less space in the warehouse than unedged boards.

Alder Edged Board: Dimensions

WoodWay Expert offers high-quality edged boards made from selected and properly dried timber. The timber is stored in appropriate conditions. We have solid boards in the following dimensions in stock:

  • Thickness: 32 mm, 52 mm;
  • Width: from 20 cm;
  • Length: 1–4.5 m.

Boards longer than 3 m incur a +20% surcharge on the price listed in the price list. Our specialists will help you choose high-quality material for your project of any complexity and scale. An additional rough cutting service is available for more convenient transport.

Features of Kiln-Dried Alder Boards

  • Dimensional stability. During kiln drying, the moisture content of the wood is brought to an average of 8–10%—a figure optimal for interior use. A controlled temperature and humidity regime significantly reduces internal stresses in the solid wood. Thanks to this, the board behaves predictably during cutting and further processing: the risk of warping, distortion, or the formation of shrinkage cracks is significantly lower. Products made from kiln-dried timber retain their shape better over a long period under stable operating conditions.
  • Biological purity of the material. The temperature regimes of kiln drying suppress the development of mould and fungi and destroy most insect larvae (woodworm). As a result, the timber enters production in a biologically safe state, which is particularly important for furniture and joinery manufacturing.
  • Quality of mechanical and finish processing. Dry timber has a stable structure, which directly affects the processing result. During milling and sawing, the tool works cleaner, and the edge comes out smooth, without excessive fuzz or chipping. Sanding proceeds evenly, fibres do not “raise”, and stains, oils, and varnishes penetrate the pores better and deeper, ensuring reliable adhesion and a stable finish.

Areas of Application for Alder Edged Board

Alder Worktops

Joinery board is a suitable material for manufacturing wear-resistant worktops for desks, coffee tables, and side tables. Solid board is also used for the production of worktops for bar counters, reception desks, counters, kitchen islands, and work surfaces.

Alder Furniture Facades

Sturdy wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, shelving units, and floor-standing or wall-mounted cabinets made from furniture board serve for decades. Such products are used for furnishing residential and public premises. Furniture facades made of timber withstand everyday operational loads.

Elements of Internal Alder Stairs

This timber is chosen for manufacturing figured balusters, newel posts, handrails, and risers. The material lends itself well to turning, allowing craftsmen to carve complex details without the risk of chipping or cracking. The species is easily toned, so products made from this soft solid wood can be integrated into design projects of various styles.

Decorative Elements from Alder Timber

The unique texture makes every product, whether it is a solid wall panel or a miniature key holder, an exclusive design object. The ability of the timber to easily undergo various types of finish processing (toning, varnishing, brushing) allows decor to be integrated into any style: from Scandinavian minimalism to rustic.

Alder Timber: Species Characteristics

Alder (Alnus) grows in Asia, Europe, and North Africa. This deciduous tree belongs to the soft species. Alder reaches a height of up to 35 m, with an average trunk thickness of 40–50 cm.

The timber, with its dense and uniform structure, has sapwood and heartwood that are virtually indistinguishable in colour. The colour palette of alder includes light beige, cream, and golden-pink shades with brown and red inclusions. Under the influence of sun and air, the wooden canvas darkens. Alder is distinguished by a delicate pattern: distinct lines are visible, but not contrasting against the general background.

At a moisture content of 12%, the density is 520–550 kg/m³: alder furniture is comparatively light. The Brinell hardness of the solid wood is 2.7. Alder is used for vertical surfaces (doors, facades, panels).

The wood is quite viscous, so it does not split when nailing or screwing. During cutting, the tool does not blunt, and the cut comes out clean without chipping. Alder is suitable for carving: figured cornices, cabriole legs, and decorative overlays are made from the solid wood.

It polishes easily and quickly, yielding a smooth satin surface. Alder is easily toned to resemble cherry, walnut, mahogany, or ebony. When painted with enamels, the timber provides an even surface without texture subsidence.
