Water-resistant okoume plywood
(okoume): key characteristics
Water-resistant plywood consists of an odd number of okoume wood veneer layers bonded with a special moisture-resistant adhesive. Key features of the material include:
- Enhanced water resistance. The wood sheets used to make the plywood board withstand prolonged contact with water (including salt water). Okoume plywood products are used in demanding, high-moisture environments.
- Impact resistance. The water-resistant plywood sheet withstands significant mechanical loads, making it suitable for automotive and shipbuilding applications.
- Light weight. Okoume plywood is both strong and lightweight. Structures made from this material are 20-50% lighter than birch equivalents.
To ensure maximum durability for water-resistant plywood products, their surfaces are coated with epoxy resin, fiberglass, painted, or varnished. It is crucial that the edges of water-resistant boards are thoroughly sealed.

A common name for this material is marine plywood. The sheets are used in the construction of wooden boats, pleasure craft, speedboats, kayaks, and canoes. Marine plywood is also used to manufacture components for inflatable boats, such as seats and flooring.
Furniture manufacturing
Okoume plywood is used to manufacture furniture for boats and cruise ship cabins. Nightstands, tables, cabinets, and bed headboards withstand high humidity and temperature changes while maintaining their dimensional stability and appealing look.
Finishing & cladding materials
Water-resistant okoume plywood is also an excellent finishing material. The panels are used for cabin wall cladding, serving multiple functions at once: these moisture-resistant wood panels improve sound insulation and the indoor microclimate. For a higher-end aesthetic, walls are lined with veneered okoume plywood. This durable and wear-resistant material is also utilized for flooring. Okoume wood: key species characteristics
The hardwood tree okoume (okoume, gabon, gaboon) is native to Central Africa. Commercial names for this timber also include Gaboon mahogany. However, okoume is not related to true mahogany; the association arose purely due to their similar grain patterns.
This exotic tree grows up to 30-40 m tall with trunk diameters around 1-1.18 m. The color of this valuable wood ranges from pale pink to light brown tones, darkening over time. Grain patterns can be straight or slightly interlocked, showing a natural luster on cut surfaces. Okoume is a resilient timber that withstands high humidity. This durable and wear-resistant wood is easy to machine with woodworking tools and bonds exceptionally well.
