The 4 mm moisture-resistant (MR) plywood in a 2400×1220 mm format made of birch and poplar combines low weight with sufficient rigidity. The sanded birch surface is suitable for painting and tinting. The sheets are used to create packaging, organisers, back panels for open shelving, and point-of-sale displays. Thanks to the internal poplar layers, the material does not chip at the edges during profile CNC routing. You can buy MR plywood from 1 sheet. We ship across Ukraine, and orders can be collected from our warehouse in Kyiv.

Features of Birch and Poplar MR Plywood: Twin Board Structure

Calibrated and sanded moisture-resistant (MR) combi plywood (Twin) is a multilayer sheet material engineered from two timber species. The outer plies of the board are formed from birch veneer, whilst the inner core is made from rotary-cut poplar veneer. The plies, laid with alternating perpendicular grain directions, are bonded with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin. This cross-banded structure absorbs internal timber stresses and stabilises the sheet’s geometry during humidity fluctuations.

  • Birch outer plies. The birch face veneers (density 650–700 kg/m³) provide a hard, durable surface. The face veneer withstands intensive sanding, edge chamfering, and the application of paints, stains, and varnishes.
  • Poplar inner plies. The lightweight core (density 450–500 kg/m³) reduces the overall weight of the board by 15–20% compared to all-birch plywood. Poplar veneer maintains stable internal glue lines and is easy to machine.
  • Moisture-resistant (MR) urea glue. The glue line meets the E0/E1 formaldehyde emission standards. The material is approved for interior use in dry and moderately humid environments.

The face veneer of Twin plywood is visually identical to classic birch boards. Woodworkers obtain the pale grain of natural birch at a more accessible cost and with a lighter board weight.

Advantages of Combi Plywood for Manufacturing

MR combi plywood optimises product unit cost without compromising structural strength. Using birch/poplar sheets provides joinery workshops, furniture manufacturers, and production facilities with the following benefits:

  • Reduced weight of finished products. Lower component weight reduces static loads on hinges, concealed drawer runners, and wall fixings. Assembling bulky cabinetry and transporting finished items requires less physical effort.
  • Extended cutting tool life. Inner poplar layers offer less resistance to saw blades and router cutters. CNC router bits last longer, and the machined edge remains clean and free of tear-out.
  • Stability during CNC routing. The cross-laminated structure compensates for internal tension and prevents warping within the sheet.
  • High screw-holding capacity. Dense birch outer plies prevent fixings from stripping. The panels hold furniture fittings and hardware securely.
  • Reduced production costs. Twin boards cost less than all-birch plywood of an equivalent grade. Manufacturers optimise their raw material budgets without compromising the aesthetics of the exposed surfaces.

Combi plywood speeds up the serial cutting of components. Furniture factories and joinery workshops achieve predictable machining results while keeping material procurement costs efficient.

FC Combined Plywood Grades

Plywood grade Face veneer / Reverse veneer Recommended finish Applications
B/BB The face surface has a uniform light colour and consistent texture without sharp colour variations. Occasional tight, sound pin knots up to 5–10 mm in diameter without splits are permitted; veneer patches are not allowed.
The reverse surface allows sound knots up to 20–25 mm in diameter and minor closed splits. Loose knots and manufacturing defects are repaired using wood patches matched by colour and grain direction.
Clear varnish, oil, staining Furniture fronts, worktops, open shelving, feature wall panels
BB/BB Both surfaces may contain sound knots up to 20–25 mm in diameter and minor closed splits. Veneer patches (plugs) are permitted, colour-matched and aligned with the grain direction. Painting, veneering Partitions, furniture fronts, CNC-routed drawer boxes
BB/CP Face side: sound knots up to 20–25 mm in diameter, minor closed splits, and colour-matched veneer patch repairs.
The reverse surface is designed for structural applications or subsequent overlay with opaque materials. Sound knots up to 40 mm, dead/loose knots up to 6 mm, natural discolouration, veneer patching, and synthetic putty repairs are permitted.
Staining (face side), opaque coating Cabinet carcasses, bed frames, units with concealed back panels
CP/CP Material for technical and structural applications. Surfaces are intended for coverage with opaque finishes or laminates. Knots up to 40 mm and loose knots up to 6 mm in diameter are permitted. Natural colour variations are allowed. Unlimited veneer patching without texture matching. No decorative finish required Internal frames for upholstered furniture, packaging, subflooring under parquet

Where is Birch and Poplar Moisture-Resistant (MR) Plywood Used?

Moisture-resistant (MR) plywood is designed for interior use in dry and moderately humid areas. The E0/E1 formaldehyde emission class allows the boards to be used in residential rooms, commercial offices, and childcare facilities. Craftsmen choose Twin combi boards for the manufacture of the following structures:

  • Cabinetry and children’s furniture. The material is used to produce wardrobes, chests of drawers, desks, shelving units, and children’s bunk beds. The light birch face veneer is suitable for clear lacquering, whilst the poplar layers reduce the load on furniture hinges and drawer runners.
  • Upholstered furniture frames. Boards 15–21 mm thick are suitable for internal frame components of sofas, armchairs, and upholstered headboards. The plywood holds staples securely and reduces the overall weight of bulky furniture pieces.
  • Interior finishing and wall panelling. Thin plywood sheets are installed as decorative wall panels, ceiling coffers, and interior partitions. The acoustic properties of porous poplar timber further improve the sound insulation of home offices, studios, and public spaces.
  • Shopfitting and exhibition stands. Mobile display units, kiosks, promotional counters, and showrooms require rapid assembly and disassembly. Lightweight plywood simplifies the handling and transportation of these structures.
  • Packaging, containers, and organisers. Boards are CNC-machined into gift boxes, custom foam/timber inserts, instrument cases, and lightweight shipping crates. Clean cuts without tear-out and low weight reduce postal and delivery costs.
  • Level subflooring for floor coverings. Technical grades of plywood are laid onto subfloor screeds before installing parquet or engineered timber flooring.

To ensure long service life, it is essential to consider the operational limits of the urea glue. MR plywood is not used for outdoor applications (balconies, terraces, gazebos, or garden furniture).
