It is essential to clarify how furniture edge-glued panel differs from other wood-based panels. MDF and chipboard are engineered using wood particles/fibres and bonding resins, while plywood consists of cross-laminated layers of rotary-cut veneer.

In contrast, furniture board is a solid wood product made from edge-glued wooden lamellas. A panel constructed from staves is significantly more dimensionally stable than a single wide timber plank of the same size.

High performance is achieved by reducing internal stresses, utilising an alternating grain structure, selecting premium raw materials, and ensuring structural rigidity through industrial gluing processes.

The manufacturing process of beech furniture board involves the following stages:

1. Ripping dry planks into lamellas. Kiln-dried timber with a moisture content of 8–10% is sawn into staves of specific widths and thicknesses.
2. Grading and sorting. The resulting segments are sorted by grade, texture, and colour. Staves with defects such as mineral streaks, large cracks, or knots are rejected according to the grade requirements.
3. Panel assembly. Lamellas are arranged into a sheet, ensuring the grain direction of adjacent segments is alternated. This multi-directional structure prevents warping and material deformation.
4. Gluing. High-strength wood adhesives are used to bond the staves. The assembled panel is then cured under a high-pressure industrial press.
5. Calibration and sanding. After the adhesive has set, the beech furniture board is calibrated to precise thicknesses and sanded to a smooth finish.

Grades of Beech Edge-Glued Panel

It is crucial for procurement specialists to note: panels of any grade possess identical density, moisture content (8–10%), and bonding strength. The distinction lies exclusively in the visual characteristics of the face surface.

• Grade 1 (A). The premium category. Lamellas are meticulously matched by colour and grain pattern. The surface is smooth with a uniform light pink or cream tone. Sound knots, sapwood, mineral streaks, cracks, or significant colour variations are not permitted.
• Grade 2 (B). An optimal balance of cost and natural timber appearance. The board displays a more pronounced natural grain; lamellas are not strictly matched by tone. Sound (“live”) knots of small diameter (up to 15-20 mm), minor colour variations, and natural inclusions are acceptable, emphasizing the wood’s authenticity.
• Grade 3 (C). A budget-friendly grade that retains all structural integrity. This is an ideal substrate for projects where the texture will be covered (e.g., opaque painting). Dark/dead knots, sapwood, significant discoloration, traces of wood filler, and micro-cracks are permitted.

«Sandwich» (multi-layered) edge-glued panel is rarely the same grade on both sides. Combining two panels of different grades allows for significant cost reduction without compromising the visual quality of the visible face.

• Grade A/B is the industry standard for worktops and windowsills. The face side (A) is flawless, while the back side (B) may contain sound knots, which are typically concealed by the cabinet frame or supports.
• Grade B/B represents the “golden mean” for components where both sides are visible and a natural, “rustic” wood appearance is desired. This material is frequently specified for open shelving units and room dividers.
• Grade A/C or B/C is the optimal technical solution for staircases mounted on concrete (where the underside is bonded to the base) or for concealed structural elements of cabinetry.
