Reconstructed material is made from peeled veneer, mostly from soft, fast-growing species. This peeled veneer is dyed, glued into blocks under pressure, and sliced again.
- Technical characteristics. Maple veneer is denser, weighing approximately 620–670 kg/m³ compared to fine-line’s 400–450 kg/m³. A natural wood sheet provides a unique texture and higher wear resistance. Fine-line has a repetitive, templated pattern and is much easier to damage.

The Manufacturing Technology of Maple Wood Veneer
The production process of this natural facing material consists of the following stages:
- Raw material preparation. We use carefully selected timber without rot, cracks, blue stain, or other visual defects. These flaws could negatively affect the sheet’s quality. Logs are cut into ridges, debarked, and sawn longitudinally to form flitches.
- Hydrothermal treatment. The resulting flitches are steamed or boiled in special chambers or hot water basins. This hydrothermal exposure increases the plasticity of the wood fibres. It also evens out the colour, reduces internal stress, and minimises the risk of cracking during slicing. Temperature and duration depend on the wood species and material density. Finally, flitches are cleaned of bark and dirt to prevent knife damage and surface defects.
- Veneer slicing. The prepared flitch is securely fixed in a veneer slicing machine. The sheet thickness (usually 0.5–2.5 mm) and feed rate are set. The knife sequentially cuts thin sheets of uniform thickness across the entire plane. This stage forms the decorative pattern and texture of the future facing material.
- Drying. The sliced sheets have high moisture content, so they are moved to drying chambers. These chambers feature controlled temperature and air circulation parameters. The material is dried to a working moisture content of 8–10%.
- Sorting and packaging. After drying, the sheets are inspected and sorted. They are categorised by grade, length, thickness, and cut type. Colour uniformity, texture clarity, and the absence of manufacturing defects are also considered. The selected material is bundled into packs (flitches), with edges trimmed using a guillotine.

Maple Veneer: Types of Cuts
The texture and visual characteristics of sliced maple veneer depend directly on the angle of the annual rings to the cutting plane. Choosing the right cut type is essential when designing furniture. It determines both the aesthetic appeal and the physical stability of the finished product.
Tangential Cut (Crown Cut)
In a tangential cut, the cutting plane passes tangentially to the annual rings, at a certain distance from the log’s core. It produces a pronounced pattern of cones, arches, and marbled swirls.
This is the most decorative type of veneer, showcasing the complex structure of maple. The angle of inclination of the annual rings to the veneer plane is less than 45°. It is widely used in cabinet furniture fascias and decorative wall panels. This cut is chosen when the emphasis is on the natural wood pattern.
Radial Cut (Quarter Cut)
The cut passes through the core of the log, perpendicular to the annual rings. The texture appears as parallel straight lines or stripes, evenly distributed across the sheet.
The pattern is highly minimalist and geometrically correct. The angle of inclination of the annual rings is between 90° and 60°. This veneer has the highest stability coefficient. It is less prone to swelling or shrinkage, making it vital for door leaf production.
Semi-Radial Cut (Rift Cut)
This is an intermediate option combining characteristics of the two previous types. The texture features straight lines on one edge of the sheet, gradually transitioning into slight arcs or slanted lines on the other.
The angle of the annual rings ranges from 45° to 60°. It is the optimal choice for large cladding areas. It preserves the natural dynamic of the wood while avoiding the excessive vibrancy of a tangential cut.
Maple Wood: Characteristics
Maple (Acer) belongs to the sapwood species. Industry professionals consider maple the gold standard for highly stable, light-coloured wood. Tree plantations are widespread across the temperate latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere.
The most valuable species for veneer and solid wood production are Norway maple (Acer platanoides), sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), and sugar maple (Acer saccharum).
This heavy, dense timber (620–720 kg/m³) is comparable to oak in hardness, scoring 3.0–3.9 on the Brinell scale. Maple withstands static loads well, absorbs impacts superbly, and resists splitting. Solid maple is highly resistant to abrasion, making it suitable for flooring and worktops.
The colour palette ranges from almost pure white (in sycamore) to cream or pale yellow. Maple lacks a clearly defined heartwood, ensuring colour uniformity across the entire cross-section.
