Unlike sliced veneer, the solid wood is not boiled or steamed before sawing. Therefore, the sawn timber retains its natural wood colour.

Contrasting colour changes (large false heartwood), sapwood, and small cracks are permitted.
What is not permitted? False heartwood (darkening), rot, any cracks, loose or black knots, and signs of insect activity. Through holes, rot, and large dead (black) knots that fall out. Friable rot that destroys the structural integrity of the fibres and reduces the veneer’s strength.
