American (Black) Walnut: Key Species Properties

The tree with its distinctive trunk coloration is native to the eastern United States. American Walnut is also known as Black Walnut, botanically classified as Juglans nigra. The tree reaches heights of 30–37 m, with a trunk diameter of 0.6–1 m.

American Walnut is classified as a hardwood, making timber from this valuable solid wood ideal for durable, wear-resistant, and high-performance joinery. This dimensionally stable, shock-resistant timber handles humidity fluctuations well and is resistant to mold and insect infestation.

The cut surface shows straight or slightly wavy grain with occasional curls, accompanied by a moderate natural luster. Pores are large in young wood and medium-sized in mature growth. The growth rings are distinct, producing a prominent grain figure.

The species’ color palette is defined by rich brown hues. A pale yellow or grayish sapwood contrasts sharply with the dark coffee, chocolate, and deep brown tones of the heartwood. American Walnut timber occasionally displays reddish, purple, or grayish streaks.

The price of American Walnut timber depends on length, width, thickness, grade, and edge profile. Black walnut is regarded as a premium hardwood and remains highly sought after by joiners and woodworkers across both the United States and Europe.

Key Features of Edged American Walnut Timber

Edged boards are chosen for joinery projects for several key reasons. First, edged timber arrives ready for cross-cutting into components, sanding, and finishing. Second, edged material is significantly easier to transport and stack. Third, purchasing edged boards eliminates material waste associated with onsite edge trimming.

Depending on project requirements, joiners choose timber dimensions such as 40×200, 20×100, 30×150, 200×50, and 100×25. The most in-demand dimensions include:

·         Edged timber thickness: 32 mm – 52 mm;

·         Timber width: from 12 cm;

·         Timber length: from 2.1 m.

Applications of Kiln-Dried American Walnut Timber

Exclusive American Black Walnut hardwood is used in furniture manufacturing, interior millwork, and wall, ceiling, and floor paneling. Working with this species requires appropriate tooling and strict adherence to processing standards. This valuable timber is most commonly used for:

1.       Furniture. Cabinetmakers choose American Walnut for bespoke interior pieces. Solid boards are used to craft armrests for chairs and sofas, tabletop elements for desks and coffee tables, and front panels for cabinets, nightstands, and dressers. American Walnut furniture boards are finished with clear coats to emphasize their rich grain depth.

2.       Wood wall panels. Edged Black Walnut timber is an architectural material used to manufacture decorative wall panels. This paneling is a traditional favorite, though dark wood also integrates seamlessly into contemporary spaces when styled correctly. Wood wall panels remain a timeless feature for residential and commercial interiors. In addition to aesthetic appeal, solid wood panels provide acoustic dampening and improve indoor climate in bedrooms, living rooms, nurseries, offices, dining rooms, libraries, hotel suites, and retail showrooms.

3.       Flooring. Solid American Walnut flooring creates a hard-wearing and durable surface. American Walnut flooring is a premium choice for high-end interior projects. This valuable hardwood is used to produce both engineered flooring planks and traditional solid wood floorboards. Engineered flooring is a multi-layered product featuring a backing base, a core of glued secondary timber, and a decorative top layer of Black Walnut. To protect the surface, engineered flooring is treated with oils, waxes, or lacquers. For classic installations, solid tongue-and-groove American Walnut planks provide a flush, seamless floor that lasts for decades.

Solid walnut is also widely used for interior accessories: picture frames, decorative carvings, napkin holders, jewelry boxes, and desk organizers.
