Elm veneer edge banding — doubled veneer

  • Wood species: Elm
  • Backing: Fleece-backed
On request

Elm edge banding is a material used in the manufacture of cabinet and upholstered furniture. This strip of sliced veneer is used for:

  1. Protecting edges. Natural wood on the edges of a worktop, cabinet, shelf or shelving unit extends the service life of the part. Elm edging protects the edges against chipping, scratches, scuffing and moisture ingress.
  2. Environmental safety. The thin tape seals in the emissions of MDF and particle board, cutting formaldehyde emission to a minimum. Bed headboards, bedside cabinets and side tables whose edges are finished with veneer edging are approved for use in living spaces, especially children’s rooms and playrooms.
  3. The look of the piece. Edge banding gives furnishings a finished, neat appearance.

Elm veneer edge banding: types and sizes

The Woodway Expert catalogue lists elm edging both pre-glued and unglued, as well as fleece-backed tape. Material in the following sizes is available for collection from the warehouse in Kyiv:

  • length: 150 lin. m, 100 lin. m, 50 lin. m;
  • thickness: 0.5 mm;

Besides standard edging we supply strips of natural veneer in non-standard sizes specified by the customer. Delivery across Ukraine is available. We work with retail and trade customers alike.

Properties of elm wood

Natural veneer edging keeps virtually all the properties of elm wood. Makers single out the following qualities of the solid timber:

  1. Strength. Dense, tough and only slightly porous, elm withstands considerable mechanical loads. The material holds screws, nails and self-tapping screws, and resists swings in temperature and humidity.
  2. Flexibility. The wood is fairly flexible, which is why it is used to make curved furniture parts and other joinery components.
  3. Workability. Elm is tough and dense, so power tools are recommended for working it.
  4. Decorative value. Elm edging reproduces the texture and figure of the solid timber precisely. The bold figure formed by the annual rings stands out clearly against the pale background. The surface polishes, sands, stains and lacquers easily. A finishing coat brings out the beauty of the grain pattern.

Solid elm and sawn timber made from it are used in furniture, musical instruments, parquet, sports equipment, knife handles and finishing materials.

Natural edge banding: what it does

What is edge banding? It is a thin tape of sliced veneer glued onto the edges of MDF, particle board and plywood. Veneer in rolls for edge banding performs the following jobs:

  • protective. The strip keeps moisture out. Edging that protects corners from mechanical damage extends the service life of worktops, chests of drawers, chairs, wardrobes and shelves;
  • environmental. The tape glued to the edges seals in the toxic emissions of fibreboard or particle board. Wood-veneered furniture with natural edging is approved for use in living spaces, including children’s rooms;
  • decorative. Elm edging gives the part a neat, finished appearance.

Elm edge banding: varieties

The Woodway Expert trade counter stocks edging sanded on the face side. The catalogue offers the following types of edge banding for particle board, MDF and plywood:

Unglued edging Veneer edging supplied without pre-applied adhesive. The maker can choose a suitable adhesive independently or ask our managers for advice.
Pre-glued edging This furniture edging carries a layer of adhesive on the reverse side. A heat gun or an iron is used to apply it. The heat softens the adhesive, bonding the veneer tape to the edge of the particle board, MDF or plywood.
Fleece-backed veneer A synthetic non-woven material – fleece – is applied to veneer spliced to length. Fleece backing produces a strong, flexible and stable veneer. Fleece-backed edging does not crack where it bends. What is more, no chips form on the surface of the tape when profiled parts are faced. Fleece-backed elm edging is used for wrapping linear mouldings (furniture cornices, skirtings and architraves).

Natural elm edging: where it is used

Edge banding is a material that solves a variety of design problems. This thin strip of veneer is used in the furniture industry and in interior fit-out.

Furniture. Furniture edging improves the appearance of furnishings and makes them more environmentally sound, and it extends the service life of chairs, tables, shelving units, storage systems and the arms of sofas and armchairs.

Window sills, frames and screens. A neat interior calls for attention to every detail. Properly faced doors, partitions, staircase balusters and arches create a coherent, practical space.
