Ash furniture edging is a strip of sliced veneer that solves a range of problems in furniture manufacture and interior fit-out. The main jobs of the edging material are:

  1. The look of the finished item. White ash edging makes worktops, wardrobes, cabinet doors and other furnishings look neat and gives them a finished appearance. The thin strip is the ideal choice for finishing cabinet furniture veneered in natural ash.
  2. Protection of the edges. Natural veneer edging protects edges and corners from chipping, scuffing and moisture. The material extends the service life of furniture made from particle board, MDF and plywood.
  3. Environmental safety. Applying the edging seals in the harmful emissions of plywood, particle board and MDF. Items with edges finished in natural wood are approved for use in residential rooms, including play rooms and children’s rooms.

White ash: characteristics of the timber

Ash veneer conveys the structure, figure and colour of solid timber in full. The wood is notable not only for its working properties but also for its looks. The outer and central layers differ in colour. The sapwood palette runs to whites with a yellowish, creamy cast. The heartwood ranges through browns and greys. Fine medullary rays and annual rings form a crisp figure.

White ash is a hardwood. Among the timber’s main characteristics are:

  • hard-wearing. The dense timber withstands heavy mechanical loads, so it is often used to finish public premises and high-traffic spaces;
  • flexibility. Ash bends well, which allows curved components to be made from it;
  • impact strength. Machining leaves no splintering on the sheet. Standard joinery tools are used for sanding and polishing.

Types of furniture edging

As noted above, edge banding is a material the furniture industry and the interior fit-out trade cannot do without. The thin strip of sliced veneer serves several purposes. First, it protects the edges and corners of cabinet furniture from moisture and mechanical damage. Second, white ash edging seals in the toxic substances in particle board, plywood and MDF. Third, facing the edges improves the look of the finished item.

Woodway Expert carries ash furniture edging in the following types:

Unglued edging The veneer strip has no adhesive layer on the back. The joiner can choose the required adhesive or ask our sales managers for help.
Fleece-backed edging Fleece-backed veneer is made by splicing lengths of sliced wood and applying a synthetic non-woven material — fleece — to the back. The resulting tape is flexible and stable. Fleece-backed furniture edging does not crack where it bends, and its surface does not chip when profiled components are worked. Fleece-backed ash edging is used to wrap furniture cornices, skirtings and architraves.
Pre-glued edging The back of the veneer strip carries a hot-melt adhesive. The edging is applied with a heat gun or an iron. Under heat the adhesive softens and bonds the strip to the particle board or MDF.

The face side is sanded and takes polishing, lacquering, tinting and painting readily.

Natural ash edging: where it is used

The main fields of use for edging material are:

  1. Furniture manufacture. Furniture edging of the right width makes the edges of worktops and fronts look neater. White ash veneer is chosen for edging pale cabinet furniture, which looks its best in both compact smart flats and spacious houses.
  2. Facing architectural features. Veneer in rolls is also used to finish doors, window sills, window frames and archways. The material makes it possible to tie every piece of the furnishing scheme together: from partitions and screens to mouldings and cornices.
  3. Making decorative pieces. Edging is used to create decorative details. Photograph and picture frames, baskets, wall panelling and other small touches help give a room its own atmosphere.
