Alder veneer edge banding (natural) — non-glued

  • Wood species: Alder
  • Backing: Unglued
On request

Alder edging is a strip of sliced veneer used to finish furniture and other items. The material is valued above all for:

  1. Environmental safety. Veneer edge banding glued to the edge of a worktop or to the fronts of a chest of drawers, cabinet or wardrobe seals in the harmful emissions of MDF and particle board. As a result, furniture finished with natural alder veneer is safe and can be used in children’s rooms and play areas.
  2. Protecting the edges from chipping. Edging that protects the corners from mechanical damage and from moisture makes furniture more hard-wearing. Chairs, desks and shelves with properly faced edges last considerably longer.
  3. Finishing the piece. Natural veneer edging is a simple way to cover the edges of a carcass or of fronts. A thin strip gives the furniture a finished look.

Key characteristics of alder timber

Natural edging is made from sliced alder veneer. A slice taken from the trunk of this hardwood keeps the working properties of the solid timber. Alder is notable for the following:

  1. Moisture resistance. Thanks to its dense, even structure, the solid timber withstands direct contact with water. Properly treated, the material is used in rooms with high humidity.
  2. Wear resistance. Alder sawn timber withstands the loads of domestic spaces.
  3. Appearance. The pale timber has an attractive palette of cream and golden-pink tones with brown or red flecks. The figure is clear but not contrasting. This soft species is easy to work. The surface takes stains well, so the material can be finished to imitate other species, including precious ones.

Alder veneer edge banding: types

The Woodway Expert catalogue carries edging sanded on the face side. The following types of furniture edging are available:

Unglued edging Edge banding with no adhesive applied in advance. Our managers will advise on choosing a suitable material.
Pre-glued edging Self-adhesive furniture edging has a layer of glue on the back. A heat gun or a household iron is needed to work with it. Applying the edging calls for correct technique. Under high heat the adhesive strip softens and fixes the veneer to the edge of the particle board, MDF or plywood.
Fleece-backed veneer The back of veneer spliced along its length carries a layer of fleece, a non-woven synthetic material. Backing it this way gives a stable, flexible edge banding material. Because it is stronger, this furniture edging does not crack on bends. When fleece-backed veneer is applied to profiled parts, no chips form on the faced surface. Fleece-reinforced furniture edging is used to wrap furniture cornices, skirting boards, architraves and other mouldings.

Alder edging: what it does and where it is used

The answer to the question “What is edge banding?” becomes clear once you look at what the material does. Edging is a strip of sliced veneer of a given width that is glued to the edge of a worktop or other surface. It gives the piece a finished look. Edging for particle board or MDF covers the edge of the board and protects it from moisture and mechanical damage. A strip of natural wood also seals in the harmful emissions of fibreboard or particle board, making the furniture greener.

Edge banding is used above all in making furniture. Edging goes into:

furniture. Veneer edging is used to face the edges of wardrobes, tables, shelves, shelving units, chairs, the arms of armchairs and sofas, chests of drawers and whatnots;

  • doors. A neat door leaf and frame are essential in any domestic or public space;
  • wall panels. Furniture edging is used in making wall panels and mouldings. Wall panels faced in alder suit a study, a library, a living room, an entrance hall or a lobby;
  • arches and screens. A thin strip of veneer is what gives window frames, cornices and stair balusters a finished appearance;
  • decorative items. Alder takes toning very well, so it is widely used in making figurines, baskets, frames and other decorative pieces.

Woodway Expert sells alder edging, pre-glued and unglued, on favourable terms. We work with trade and retail customers alike. Our sales managers will confirm current pricing, stock, payment terms and delivery times.
