Edged teak board is timber with no bark on the side edges. The sawn product is ready for further processing and is convenient for transport and storage. This material is suitable for the production of both interior and exterior items.

Grades of Edged Teak Board

How Many Cubic Metres in a Teak Board?

Timber is measured in cubic metres, and the price of materials in the catalogue is indicated per cubic metre. How do you find out how many cubic metres are in one board?

The volume of timber products is calculated individually. The following formula is used for calculations: V = a × b × c, where a is length, b is width, c is thickness.

Let us calculate the cubic volume of a teak board 3 m long, 32 cm wide, and 40 mm thick. We convert the indicators to metres, substitute them into the formula, and find the board volume: 3 × 0.32 × 0.04 = 0.038 m³.

The cubic volume of boards of other sizes is determined similarly.

How to Calculate the Price of a Teak Board?

The cost of timber is influenced by grade and dimensions. The price in the price list and catalogue is indicated for 1 m³. How do you find out the price of 1 board?

You need to use the formula: Price per cube × (a × b × c). That is, multiply the cost of a cubic metre by the volume of the specific board.

Let us find out the price of Grade 1 and Extra (highest) grade teak boards.

Option 1. Edged board of Extra grade, length 2.8 m, width 27 cm (0.27 m), thickness 35 mm (0.035 m), price per cubic metre — €11,999. Using the formula above: 11999 × (2.8 × 0.27 × 0.035) = €311.97.

Option 2. Edged board of Grade 1, length 3.1 m, width 28 cm (0.28 m), thickness 45 mm (0.045 m), price per m³ — €9,999. Using the same principle: 9999 × (3.1 × 0.28 × 0.045) = €389.96.

How Many Teak Boards in a Cubic Metre?

How much is 1 cube? To determine the number of boards that fit into a cubic metre, use the formula: N = 1 ÷ (a × b × c). This divides 1 by the board’s cubic volume.

For clarity, let us calculate the number of boards in a cube. As an example, we will take timber 3.2 m long, 27 cm wide (0.27 m), and 50 mm thick (0.05 m).

Performing the calculation: 1 ÷ (3.2 × 0.27 × 0.05) = 23.3. Therefore, 23 such boards will fit in a cubic metre.

Teak Timber: Characteristics

Teak (Tectona grandis) is a deciduous tree common in the monsoon forests of Southeast and South Asia. This valuable timber is distinguished by its strength, resistance to nature’s whims, and aesthetic appearance. Teak solid wood is used in shipbuilding, the furniture industry, and construction.

Colour of teak timber: Golden-brown, dark brown; dark streaks are encountered. Texture: Dense (about 650-700 kg/m³) and uniform; there is a moderate lustre, and the grain pattern is pronounced.

Teak hardness on the Brinell scale is 3.5. The solid wood is resistant to loads and maintains a stable shape. Well-sharpened tools are used for working with the species.

Teak timber is easily processed: it can be sawn, milled, polished, stained, and varnished. Additional surface preparation is required before gluing and painting.

Due to the content of natural oils, teak is slightly oily, which can complicate the processing procedure. On the other hand, it is precisely thanks to these oils that the species is resistant to high humidity, mould, and insects. The material is suitable not only for internal but also for external use.

Most teak timber presented on the global market is grown on plantations in Indonesia and Myanmar (Burma). Solid wood from these countries undergoes control, so Burmese teak is considered of maximum quality.

Consumption of commercial timber is growing, so the valuable species is also grown on plantations in the tropics of South America. Additionally, trade names such as African teak, Rhodesian teak, and Brazilian teak can be found on the market. These varieties are similar to Burmese teak but belong to different botanical families.
