Furniture Board: What Is It?

An edge-glued panel (solid wood panel) is a sheet material made of wooden staves (lamellas) that are precisely sized and glued together. The width of these staves can vary: typically, segments 20–30 mm wide are used, but panels with staves 40–50 mm wide are also common. Made entirely of natural wood, these panels preserve the texture of solid timber, making them highly popular for producing interior elements. However, aesthetic appeal is not their only advantage. Unlike solid timber, edge-glued panels are dimensionally stable, more rigid, and not prone to warping or cracking. What gives edge-glued panels these qualities?

1. Relief of Internal Stress. The larger the surface area, the higher the internal stress caused by uneven drying and the natural structure of the wood. This internal tension can cause solid timber and products made from it to warp or split. Sawing the wood into staves relieves most of this internal stress. Once glued together, the segments form a stable, durable structure.
2. Alternating Grain Direction. In solid timber, the wood grain runs in a single direction. When humidity changes, the wood can deform along or across the grain. In an edge-glued panel, the staves are arranged so that the grain direction alternates between adjacent segments. This alternating pattern significantly reduces the risk of panel deformation.
3. Uniform Drying of Raw Material. Staves are made from dry lumber with a moisture content of about 8–10%. Kiln drying ensures that the wood is uniformly and thoroughly dried.
4. Quality Control of Staves. The staves are sorted by quality, length, and width. Segments with cracks, large knots, or resin pockets are rejected. This meticulous sorting results in a homogeneous, high-quality material. With solid wood, by contrast, defects can run through the entire log.
5. Gluing. Utilizing the right adhesive creates an exceptionally strong bond.

• Grading. Extra Grade: Staves are perfectly matched by grain pattern and color; the surface is uniform and completely free of knots. Grade 1 (A): Minor tonal variations are permitted; technical characteristics are comparable to Extra grade. Grade 2 (B): Variations in shades and wood texture are allowed; the surface remains free of cracks. Grade 3 (C): Significant color variation, sapwood, healthy knots, and minor surface cracks are permitted. These panels are often painted or veneered to conceal natural defects.

Oak is the most sought-after species in the Ukrainian market. Solid oak is approximately 30% harder than ash (Brinell hardness 3.7) and offers excellent machinability. With a density of 720 kg/m³ and a distinct, pronounced grain pattern, this timber integrates seamlessly into both contemporary and classic interiors.
