Oak Solid Wood Panels: Overview, Buying Guide, Grades & Varieties
Unlike chipboard and MDF, which are produced from wood shavings, oak solid wood panels are crafted from glued solid wood staves. Craftsmen value these edge-glued panels for their perfect balance of technical specifications and optimal pricing. Oak panels with a thickness of 20 mm and alternative dimensions are available from stock; our manager will provide detailed technical specifications. Minimum order quantity (MOQ) starts from a single panel. We ship across Ukraine via domestic carriers, with warehouse self-pickup also available.
An edge-glued panel is a durable and eco-friendly material. In terms of dimensional stability, it often surpasses solid timber. Production involves using staves (lamellas) of uniform width, arranged in a specific order and bonded with professional-grade wood glue.
The solid wood panel is characterised by:
- Reduced internal stress. Sawing the timber into staves relieves the internal tension found in wide solid planks, which often arises from structural peculiarities and uneven drying.
- Multi-directional structure. We offer oak solid wood panels where segments are arranged precisely. To create a warp-resistant sheet, staves are distributed so that the grain direction in adjacent blocks alternates.
- Evenly dried segments. Lamellas are obtained by sawing kiln-dried boards with a moisture content of 8-10%. All stages of kiln drying are strictly regulated, resulting in uniformly dried timber. Dry staves create a stable material not prone to checking or cracking.
- High-quality raw material. Staves for edge-glued panels are selected by grade, shade, texture, and size. Defective blocks are discarded, whereas solid timber may contain hidden resin pockets, cracks, or knots.
- Rigid structure. The gluing process adds significant stiffness and structural integrity to the sheet.
Solid wood panels can withstand significant loads, are environmentally safe, and are recyclable. They retain the natural grain pattern and palette of oak. Products made from edge-glued panels are chosen for both exquisite classical designs and cost-effective modern projects.
Solid Oak Wood Panels: Types
Depending on production specifics and structure, two varieties of panels are distinguished: those made from full staves and those from finger-jointed staves. Let us clarify the differences between these types.
- Finger-Jointed Oak Panel. These panels are produced from staves of varying lengths. To achieve blocks of a specific length, segments are joined using micro-tenons (finger joints). The lamellas are then glued longitudinally and placed under a high-pressure press. Once the glue sets, the boards are calibrated. A finger-jointed solid wood panel is exceptionally stable and rigid. The surface resembles a parquet pattern. The variety of oak textures and shades fits perfectly into interior styles such as Loft, Art, Eco, Neoclassical, Scandi, Industrial, and Eclectic.
- Full Stave Oak Panel. If a project requires a uniform texture and consistent colour scheme, we recommend you buy full stave solid wood panels. Made from lamellas of equal length (continuous staves), the panel features only side-to-side gluing, creating a surface that resembles wide solid planks. Such edge-glued panels are more expensive due to higher raw material requirements, yet they are stylistically universal. Items made from full stave oak fit seamlessly into classic interiors (Baroque, Art Deco, Classicism, Empire, Gothic).
Oak panels are a premium material suitable for high-end furniture manufacturing and interior fit-outs. Each panel represents a unique combination of textures and shades.

You can select a 20mm oak solid wood panel in person: visit our warehouse, and a manager will help you find the optimal material. These 20mm panels can also be ordered for delivery to any location.
We also manufacture 40mm oak edge-glued panels to order, available for purchase on favourable terms. Production lead times are up to 10 working days. Panels with a thickness of 40mm consist of two 20mm sheets (doubled-up). This layered structure provides the material with additional stability and resistance to warping.
Grades of Oak Solid Wood Panels
The grade of the oak panel influences aesthetics exclusively. Density, hardness, and bonding quality remain equally high across all classes.
- Grade 1 (A, Select). This is the highest quality and cleanest material. Lamellas are hand-picked by grain pattern and shade to create a monolithic effect. The surface is uniform and monochromatic, free from knots, sapwood, and defects.
- Grade 2 (B, Nature). The standard for modern interiors. The material retains the natural beauty of the wood. Sound “live” knots of small diameter (up to 10-20 mm), a minor amount of sapwood, and natural colour variations are permitted.
- Grade 3 (C, Rustic / Antique). The most textured grade, chosen for its character as much as for economy. The surface features large knots of various types (including filled or cracked ones), pronounced sapwood, sharp colour contrasts, and micro-checks.
Combined marking is used for multi-layered (sandwich) panels. Using a lower grade for the reverse side allows for reduced material costs while maintaining a premium appearance on the face.
- Grade 1/2 (A/B). The most popular option for worktops and stair treads. The face side (1/A) is clean and knot-free, while the reverse (2/B) allows for small knots and natural variations.
- Grade 2/2 (B/B). The optimal choice for vertical elements visible from both sides. Both surfaces feature a “live” natural pattern.
- Grade 2/3 (B/C) or 1/3 (A/C). “Technical” or “economy” grades. Used for items where one side will be painted or hidden within the construction.
What is the Optimal Moisture Content for Oak Solid Wood Panels?
When choosing an oak edge-glued panel, moisture content (MC) is the most critical technical indicator. The industry standard for interior joinery (furniture, stairs, window sills) is 8–10%.
Why is this critical? Wood is a hygroscopic material that constantly seeks equilibrium moisture content (EMC) with its environment. In a residential setting, relative humidity typically fluctuates between 40–60%. Oak with 8–10% moisture maintains its shape and dimensions in such conditions.
If the moisture content is higher than 12%, the oak will begin to release moisture rapidly in a heated room. Fibres contract, leading to shrinkage. Consequently, deep cracks may appear, glue lines may rupture, and the panel’s geometry may fail (warping).
If the moisture content is lower than 6%, the timber begins to absorb moisture from the air aggressively. The panel swells and may start to cup or bow, which can lead to the failure of fixings or joinery hardware.
What Can Be Made from Oak Solid Wood Panels?
Material made from edge-glued solid wood is used for the production of various furnishings and interior architectural elements. Oak panels are used to create:
- Worktops (Countertops). Joiners and designers often choose edge-glued panels for worktops, as the material combines excellent decorative and performance qualities. An oak solid wood panel is easily finished: it can be tinted, bleached, brushed, treated with waxes or oils, and varnished. A worktop made from solid wood panels fits into various design styles. Finger-jointed panels are typically chosen for Country, Loft, Industrial, Eco, Boho, Eclectic, Scandi, and Retro styles. Full stave panels are more suitable for Neoclassical, Classicism, Empire, Gothic, and Baroque projects.
- Seating. Robust solid wood panels are ideal for manufacturing bench seats for hallways, ottomans, bar stools, and tabourets.
- Stairs. Stair treads made from finger-jointed panels are considered more wear-resistant due to the higher density of glue joints, which enhances stability. However, from an aesthetic point of view, the “parquet” look does not suit all projects. If a uniform grain pattern is paramount, manufacturers use full stave solid wood panels.
- Cabinetry Fronts. Wardrobes, bedside tables, chests of drawers, and tall units made from oak panels serve for generations. High-quality furniture is chosen for both residential and commercial premises.
- Interior Panelling. Solid wood panels are used as premium wall cladding. Each segment of the edge-glued panel offers a unique texture and natural transition of tones. Edge-glued oak is sometimes used to clad entire walls, but the material is typically used to accentuate feature walls in living rooms, bedrooms, studies, or conference halls.
- Headboards. Thanks to its structural strength and decorative qualities, an oak panel can become a stunning headboard. The material is applied in the manufacture of both modern and classic bed frames.
- Window Sills. Using edge-glued panels for window sills (window boards) is common in apartments, country houses, offices, and hotels. Treated with appropriate protective coatings, the solid wood panel is resistant to fluctuations in humidity and temperature.
Additionally, craftsmen create interior partitions, doors, boxes, shelving units, and various interior decor elements from edge-glued oak.
