Birch veneer is produced by peeling solid wood and retains the structure of the solid wood. The formaldehyde content corresponds to the natural level of the wood (class E1 or E0).
Natural veneer features a unique pattern with knots, medullary rays, and other natural characteristics. Natural transitions of tones and halftones are possible. Birch has a high density (about 650 kg/m³). Natural veneer is chosen for projects where eco-friendliness and unique design are priorities.
Fine-line (reconstituted/engineered veneer) is made from rotary-cut veneer of softwood species. The raw material is dyed, glued into blocks, and re-sliced. The surface of such sheets has a repeating pattern and identical color. Thanks to numerous adhesive layers, fine-line is less prone to cracking when veneering radial (curved) surfaces. Texture and Pattern of Rotary-Cut Birch Veneer
The peculiarity of rotary-cut birch veneer is that the material has a specific pattern that differs radically from sliced veneer. Because the knife cuts a layer of wood parallel to the annual rings (as if unrolling a roll), the pattern comes out wide, blurred, and chaotic.
- The pattern lacks clearly defined lines. Large waves, spots, or smooth color transitions appear on the surface. This creates a watercolor effect, where one layer of color softly flows into another.
- Birch fibers are fine and dense, so they do not create a rough relief. To the touch, this veneer is smooth. In the light, you can notice a characteristic silky sheen.
- The surface has no deep pores (unlike oak or ash), so it looks monolithic after sanding.
- Small dark streaks or tiny sound “pin knots” are often found on rotary-cut veneer, adding an authentic look to the material.

Stages of Rotary-Cut Birch Veneer Production
The process of manufacturing rotary-cut veneer combines mechanical processing and thermal preparation.
- Raw material selection. Sound logs are suitable for veneer production. The logs are cut to a specific size and cleared of bark.
- Hydrothermal treatment. The logs (peeler blocks) are soaked in hot water vats. This softens the fibers, making the solid wood more plastic.
- Debarking. The boiled blocks undergo additional debarking: bark and wane remnants are removed from the trunk to protect the lathe knives.
- Peeling. The log is fixed in the rotary lathe and rotates around its axis. A long knife, set parallel to the log’s axis, peels off a wide, continuous ribbon of wood.
- Drying. The wooden “canvas” is dried in conveyor-type dryers to a moisture content of 8-10%. At these levels, the veneer is stable and can be used for veneering substrates.
- Cutting. The ribbon is cut into sheets of a specified size.
- Bundling. The veneer sheets are sorted by grade, size, and log, and stacked into bundles (flitches). The edges of the bundles are trimmed with a guillotine to align the ends for a perfect joint. The bundles are stacked on pallets.
