Veneered MDF boards are fibreboard sheets whose surface is faced with sliced veneer. A slice of natural wood improves both the look and the environmental credentials of the material. MDF panels are used to make:

  1. Fronts for carcase furniture. MDF furniture panels are hard-wearing and easy to work. Parts of all shapes are cut from the sheets. Pieces with a veneered face suit classical and modern interiors alike.
  2. Facing for floors, walls and ceilings. MDF board on the wall is a trend used widely in studies, living rooms, libraries and bedrooms. Decorative MDF panels are also used to finish ceilings and floors.
  3. Architectural elements. Doors, window sills, screens, beams, arches and partitions made from fibreboard help organise a space properly.

Veneered MDF panel: what is it?

MDF board is a composite material made from finely ground wood dust. Timber-processing waste and trees scheduled for felling are ground down, after which come stages such as:

  • steam treatment of the wood mixture;
  • refining the steamed mass in a defibrator;
  • drying the resulting material;
  • adding binders to the mixture;
  • compacting the wood mass;
  • hot pressing;
  • sanding and cutting the blanks;
  • applying a decorative finish to the surface of the sheets.

Veneered boards are covered with a thin slice of wood. Our warehouse shop stocks MDF panels faced with sliced oak, ash, American walnut and alder veneer.

Properties of MDF boards

Veneered MDF panels are used across many branches of manufacturing. The material offers the following properties:

  1. Environmental safety. The binders used in fibreboard are resins with a minimal formaldehyde content. Sheets marked E1 are safe for people and animals and are approved for use in living spaces. Facing with natural wood further improves the environmental figures of the sheet.
  2. Resistance to wear. MDF panels have a uniform structure. Once the refined mass has been pressed, no voids or gaps remain between the fibres. A composite board is not prone to cracking or warping. Some grades of MDF sheet contain special additives that make them resistant to high humidity or high temperatures, for example. Such MDF panels are used in bathrooms and kitchens. Cupboards, shelves, shelving units and worktops made from moisture-resistant fibreboard withstand the loads of wet areas and last a long time.
  3. Easy machining. The sheets cut readily. A veneered surface needs no painting. Stains, oils and lacquers are used to bring out the beauty of the natural wood figure.

Veneered MDF sheets: the varieties

The WoodWay Expert catalogue holds MDF veneered in a range of species. Sheets faced with alder, oak, American walnut and ash are available. The veneer used to face the boards varies in colour palette, texture and figure.

MDF boards veneered in American walnut. This timber is notable for its strong decorative qualities. Its expressive figure and rich brown tones make it popular for suites in traditional interiors.

MDF sheet with ash veneer. Light timber with a clear figure is a universal answer for dozens of schemes. Ash works equally well in understated Scandinavian modern and in cosy country settings.

MDF panel veneered in oak. The textured surface of oak is used in industrial, eco, minimalist, loft, grunge and eclectic interiors.

MDF board faced with alder. Alder is almost uniform in colour and takes stain well, so the sheet can be finished to imitate other species.
