- Wall and ceiling panels. Wall and ceiling panels faced with ash help to give a room an atmosphere of its own. Lining walls with natural wood is a sound choice for studies, libraries and conference rooms as much as for living rooms, bedrooms and hotel rooms.
- Doors and architectural elements. Doors, arches, screens, window sills and room dividers made from ash veneered MDF make a space functional and, used properly, last for many years.

MDF panels: how they are made and where they are used
Industrial production of fibreboard panels began in 1966. For more than half a century MDF has remained an important material for furniture making and construction. Composite boards are green and hard-wearing. Their flat surface takes decorative finishes well, veneering among them. A thin slice of natural ash bonded to the face improves both the working properties and the appearance of the board. Products made from veneered MDF are chosen for city flats and country houses as much as for offices.
Composite boards are made from sawdust, with lignin – a substance of natural origin – acting as the binder. After milling and steam treatment the wood goes into a defibrator, where it is ground down. The resulting mass is dried and mixed with bonding resins and paraffin wax. The mixture is compacted in a hopper and then passes onto the conveyor. It is rolled out, pressed and heated. Under heat the material becomes stronger and denser. The finished blanks are cooled, then sanded, and the ash veneer is bonded to them.
MDF faced with natural wood is a material used to make:
| Cabinet furniture | MDF fronts, priced according to the finish, suit both modern and classic interiors. Wardrobes, cupboards and tall units made from pressed board last for decades. |
|---|---|
| Doors, handrails, dividers, skirting | Internal MDF doors, available to buy anywhere in the country, take a considerable load. Veneered panels are also used for decorative beams, handrails, screens and other fittings. |
| Ceiling and wall panels | Where a room needs sound insulation, specialists recommend MDF cladding. Wood is a worthy alternative to the usual finishing materials. Ash veneered panels suit interior styles such as country, neoclassical and eco. |
Properties of ash veneered MDF
Among the reasons joiners give for buying MDF, the following stand out:
- it is easy to work. Pressed board saws cleanly with the right equipment. Curved elements and parts of complex shape can be cut from it. The veneered surface takes stains and lacquers;
- it wears well enough. Composite panels are of medium strength, which the production process makes possible. The raw material is milled and ground before pressing, giving an almost uniform mass. There are no gaps or voids between the fibres. Furniture and other items made from ash veneered MDF stand up to the everyday loads of homes and offices;
- it is environmentally sound. Our online shop sells class E1 MDF. This class of panel is allowed in bedrooms, studies, kitchens, living rooms and children’s rooms, because the formaldehyde content is safe for health. The ash veneer adds to the material’s green credentials.
Ash veneer: colour range and figure
The dense, hard-wearing timber of ash is used for all manner of household items. Beyond its strength, the wood is notable for an interesting figure. The rings stand out clearly against the background. Stains and lacquers make the wood more contrasted still. The commonest shades of the unfinished face are grey, white, light brown and yellow, with reddish tones also occurring.
