MDF is a board made from milled wood fibre and binders. Panels veneered with alder offer good environmental figures, wear resistance and an attractive appearance. Sheets faced with natural wood are used to make:

  1. Cabinet furniture. Pale furniture suits almost any modern or classic interior. Wardrobes, chests of drawers and shelving units faced with alder look right in both formal and relaxed schemes.
  2. Wall and ceiling panels. Natural wood in place of the usual wallpaper or plaster is a trend designers are making full use of. Lining walls with panels of neutral grain suits studies, libraries, living rooms, bedrooms and hotel rooms.
  3. Doors and architectural elements. Alder veneered MDF is made into doors, arches, screens, window sills and room dividers. Well-chosen fittings give a space a single, coherent style.

Properties of veneered MDF panels

The qualities usually named for MDF are that it is environmentally sound and easy to work. Thanks to the particular production process, the composite material withstands swings in temperature and humidity as well as everyday loads. Fibreboard panels are widely used for furniture, doors, dividers, screens, ceiling and wall panels and other fittings. Items made from alder veneered MDF sit comfortably in classic and modern interiors alike.

Alder veneered MDF is a popular material in furniture making. Joiners favour fibreboard for qualities such as:

  1. Ease of working. The mass that goes into the press is almost uniform, so no voids remain between the particles. Uniform material saws cleanly and the edge stays straight, without chipping. Veneered MDF, available to buy in Kyiv or any other city in the country, is made into curved elements and parts of complex geometry.
  2. Strength and stability. Alder veneered MDF is a hard-wearing material that neither shrinks nor swells under small changes in indoor humidity and temperature. Items made from fibreboard stand up to the everyday loads of homes and public spaces.
  3. Environmental safety. The MDF sheets in our catalogue are considered environmentally safe, as their formaldehyde content is within the permitted limit. The E1 marking shows that the material may be used in living spaces.

How alder veneered MDF panels are made

Fibreboard, like particle board, is made from milled wood chips. The difference between the two composites lies in how the raw material is processed. MDF is made from timber-processing waste and from trees scheduled for felling. The sawdust is chipped into small cubes, which are then treated with steam at high pressure.

The resulting mass goes into a defibrator, where the raw material is ground down. The part-dried material is then mixed with paraffin wax and bonding resins, dried for a few minutes in hot air and compacted in a hopper. The mixture is rolled out on the conveyor, then pressed and heated by dedicated equipment. Under heat the composite softens and becomes denser and stronger. The pressure is then reduced and the thickness of the blank is set.

After pressing, the boards need time to cool. The final stages of making MDF panels are sanding, cutting to sheet size and bonding the alder veneer. The pressed sheets are veneered to the correct process and on modern equipment.

What alder veneer is like

Alder is known above all for sanding, polishing and staining easily, and for standing up to moisture. Its particular structure lets the wood survive direct contact with water. Properly treated, the face resists rot and fungus. The timber is notable for a neutral figure. The annual rings are visible but not contrasting. The colour range of alder veneer runs to pale tones – milky, golden pink – with red flecks.
