# Wood Drying Methods: Stages, Types, Features

- 20 September 2023
- Categories: Guides

Wood is used in construction, furniture manufacturing, and in producing doors, window sills, stairs, screens, interior partitions, wood wall panels, toys, musical instruments, sports equipment, and various household and decorative items. To ensure wooden products last as long as possible, it is essential to choose properly dried timber. In this article, we cover common wood drying methods, the main stages of the technological process, and identify the optimal wood moisture levels for specific applications.

**Table of Contents**

1. Wood Moisture Content
2. Natural Wood Drying
3. Kiln Wood Drying
4. Wood Drying Stages

## [**Wood Moisture Content**](/product-category/doshka/)

Trees harvested in forestry operations undergo multi-stage processing. Logs selected for the production of edged and unedged timber, beams, and battens have a moisture content of around 50–70% after felling. Due to high moisture content in the log, sawn products can deteriorate. For timber and other sawn products to be suitable for machining and manufacturing, the wood must be properly dried.

Wood moisture content is a metric that defines the percentage ratio of water mass to the mass of dry wood. Timber with specific moisture levels is selected for different applications. The moisture level in furniture timber should be 6–10%, while timber intended for exterior facade cladding should not exceed 16–18%. Flooring boards or wall cladding require material with 8–15% moisture content, while doors, stairs, and windows require 15% (±2%). The moisture content of shipping-dry timber is 18–22%.

The most common methods for drying timber today are natural (air) drying and kiln (technical, artificial) drying. To dry timber properly and achieve specific moisture levels, specialized equipment is used. Temperature settings and heating duration are chosen depending on workpiece thickness and wood species.

## Natural Wood Drying

Air or natural drying of timber is considered the gentlest method, but also the most time-consuming. This processing method yields workpieces with a moisture content of 18–22%. Moisture is removed from the wood naturally. Timber is stacked in piles with gaps between layers to allow air circulation. Stacks are stored in a dry warehouse or under a shed. Drying timber in the open air requires considerable time (months or even years). For example, hardwood timber can take up to 7 years to dry.

## Kiln Wood Drying

In the commercial sector, technical (artificial) drying has virtually completely replaced natural drying today. Specialized dry kilns provide gradual moisture evaporation from timber through controlled heating. Properly organized kiln drying ensures uniform and fast removal of moisture from wood without overdrying the outer layers. High-quality results are achieved using process standards that specify ambient temperature and humidity for drying specific wood species. Kiln drying produces timber, beams, and battens with a moisture content of 8–15%.

Dry kilns vary by heating type. The following types of systems are available:

- electric;
- hot water;
- gas;
- steam.

By design, kiln dryers can be belt, roller, rotary drum, or pneumatic. Kilns also differ by the method of loading timber.

| Kiln Loading Method | Characteristics |
| --- | --- |
| Tunnel | Timber is loaded into a tunnel kiln via rail tracks. The cart with timber enters the kiln on rails and moves toward the exit. |
| Front-loading | Timber is loaded through swing or sliding doors. The cart enters and exits the kiln through the same doorway. |

Depending on the forced ventilation system installed in the kiln, the following technical wood drying methods are distinguished:

1. **Conductive.** Timber dries via heat transfer through contact with heated surfaces.
2. **Convective-thermal.** This method of drying timber with air, steam, or in a vacuum is used in gas-steam, vacuum, or rotary kilns. Excess moisture is removed from the wood through air heating and vapor extraction via exhaust ventilation.
3. **Radiant (infrared).** Infrared drying heats the moisture inside rather than the timber itself. This drying method produces timber with 8–10% moisture content.
4. **Dielectric.** Moisture evaporation occurs under the influence of an electromagnetic field. Wood placed between capacitor plates heats up due to dielectric losses.

## Wood Drying Stages

The wood drying process can be divided into the following stages:

1. Heating the dry kiln to 40°C.
2. Warming up the timber with humidification and air circulation.
3. Drying. Temperature is gradually increased and humidity is lowered. The process is monitored using moisture meters and other specialized sensors.
4. Moisture and heat treatment of the dried timber to relieve internal stresses in the wood.
5. Conditioning. An obligatory stage for top-grade sawn timber. Ensures uniform moisture distribution along, deep into, and across the stack.
6. Cooling the timber to 40°C. Guarantees a uniform moisture level across the timber.
