## Manufacturing Stages of Edge-Glued Panels

1. Raw Material Selection. Only premium kiln-dried boards are selected for production. Timber with a moisture content (MC) of 8-10% provides the essential foundation for a stable, high-quality panel.
2. Ripping and Cross-Cutting. The timber is ripped into blanks — lamellas of a specific width. These strips are then meticulously sorted. Segments containing knots, cracks, wormholes, or other structural defects are either rejected or sent for defecting (removal of imperfections). Selected lamellas are then planed (S4S) on all four sides. For finger-jointed (FJ) panels, a professional-grade finger-joint profile is milled onto the ends of short staves before they are joined longitudinally under high pressure.
3. Panel Assembly. Lamellas are laid out according to a precise technical pattern: the growth ring direction in adjacent segments must alternate to counteract natural warping. During this stage, strips are matched by colour and grain texture for visual consistency.
4. Gluing. Lamellas are joined using D3 or D4 class adhesives (according to EN 204 standards), which are applied evenly to the edges. The assembled panel is then processed in a high-pressure hydraulic press.
5. Calibration and Sanding. Once the curing process is complete, the panels undergo calibration to ensure precise thickness and are sanded to a smooth finish. The resulting material is fully prepared for further finishing, such as lacquering, staining, or oil treatment.

## Why is Oak Edge-Glued Panel More Stable than Solid Timber?

The primary issue with solid timber is its hygroscopicity. Solid wood naturally absorbs and releases moisture, which often leads to deformation, cupping, and cracking. An edge-glued panel (EGP) resolves this issue through three key factors:

1. Internal stress compensation. In a solid board, the fibres are oriented in a single direction. If the board begins to "pull" during the drying process, the entire piece deforms. In an edge-glued panel, the staves (lamellas) are selected so that their growth ring directions are alternating. The internal energy of one stave is neutralised by the resistance of the adjacent one.
2. Absence of critical fracture points. Cracks in wood typically propagate along the fibres. Since the panel consists of individual segments, a micro-crack appearing in one stave cannot physically transfer to another. The glue line acts as a structural barrier.
3. Uniform response to humidity changes. Because an edge-glued panel consists of narrow staves, each element reacts to humidity fluctuations more quickly and predictably. This reduces internal stresses within the material and minimises the risk of warping.

Oak edge-glued panel is more stable than solid timber because its construction compensates for the wood’s natural hygroscopicity. The multi-directional grain of the staves counteracts internal stresses, glue lines block the spread of cracks, and narrow elements respond more uniformly to moisture fluctuations. As a result, the panel deforms less and maintains its dimensional stability significantly longer than a solid board.

Oak interacts well with various types of finishes: oils and waxes deeply penetrate the pores, while varnishes create a durable protective film. A specific treatment method is fuming (staining), where tannins react with chemical compounds, colouring the wood dark or black while preserving the natural grain pattern.
