## Hornbeam Sawn Veneer Grades

For facing materials, the grade indicates aesthetic characteristics rather than technical quality. Since lamella is used as a face layer, its classification is based on visual parameters: the presence of knots, sapwood, medullary rays, and colour uniformity.

All grades in our range undergo the same kiln-drying cycle to a moisture content (MC) of 8–10% and precision thickness sanding. The choice of grade depends solely on the intended style of the finished product.

## Where is Hornbeam Sawn Veneer Used?

### Parquet Board

Hardwood sawn veneer is used as the wear layer of flooring. The Hornbeam wear layer withstands the operational loads of residential spaces and, with proper treatment and maintenance, provides long-lasting service. Engineered and parquet boards are aesthetic, practical, and wear-resistant materials that suit dozens of interior styles.

### Staircase Elements and Treads

Sawn veneer from hard and dense species is used to face the treads and landings of internal staircases. Lamellas withstand significant loads, maintain their structural geometry, and are suitable for future restoration.

### Worktops

Sawn veneer sheets are a durable material used for desks, coffee tables, and side tables, as well as bar counters, shop counters, reception desks, and kitchen islands.

### Furniture Fronts

Sawn lamella allows for the creation of unique custom cabinetry. Due to its sufficient thickness, veneered fronts can be milled or wire-brushed. ## Sawn Lamella Production Technology

- **Raw material selection.** The production process begins with the rigorous selection of premium and prime-grade boards. This stage defines the quality of the future product, as timber characteristics directly affect the aesthetics and performance of the lamella.
- **Kiln drying.** Selected raw materials undergo drying in specialised kilns. This technology allows for the achievement of an optimal joinery moisture content (MC) level (8–10%), which is essential for material stability. Correct drying reduces internal stresses and prevents deformation or cracking.
- **Calibration.** Before sawing, the boards are calibrated to dimensions that match the parameters of the saw frame. This approach ensures high precision in subsequent processing and optimal material yield.
- **Sawing.** Prepared blanks are fed into a Wintersteiger machine. After setting the thickness and other parameters, the timber is resawn into sheets. The use of high-precision equipment guarantees consistent saw-cut quality.
- **Quality control (QC) and grading.** The finished sawn veneer is inspected for compliance with dimensions, thickness, and grade. After grading, the lamellas are grouped into bundles, which are then packed onto pallets for transport.

## Hornbeam Timber: Technical Characteristics and Properties

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is one of the hardest hardwood species in Europe, frequently referred to as «white beech» or «ironwood» due to its exceptional density. In the woodworking industry, hornbeam is highly valued as a structural material for components subjected to significant mechanical stress and wear. Hornbeam stands in Ukraine are primarily concentrated in the Carpathian region, Crimea, and the forest-steppe zone. Trees aged 50–70 years provide the highest technical value for industrial processing.

This is a diffuse-porous, non-heartwood species with a density ranging from 740 to 800 kg/m³ (at 12-15% moisture content). The Brinell hardness value is 3.7 HB. When steamed, hornbeam exhibits good steam-bending properties; however, due to its high density and fiber structure, this process is more intensive and demanding compared to European beech.

The timber features a pale, greyish-white, or yellowish hue. The grain pattern is subtle and fine-textured. Planed surfaces are typically matt and uniform. The presence of interlocked grain makes the wood resistant to splitting but challenging to work. Narrow medullary rays are distinct on the radial section, adding to the material’s authentic appearance.

During machining, cutting tools tend to dull rapidly due to the timber’s high density and cross-grain structure. The use of diamond-coated (PCD) or stellite-tipped saw blades is highly recommended for industrial volumes. The timber can be sanded and polished to a high-gloss, mirror finish. The solid wood responds well to staining (particularly for ebony imitation/eubonizing) but requires professional surface degreasing prior to coating. Hornbeam provides excellent screw-holding capacity, though pre-boring pilot holes is mandatory to prevent splitting.
