# Okoume Plywood: Types, Applications

- 1 February 2024
- Categories: Guides

**[Birch plywood](/product-category/fanera/)**, alder, and poplar plywood are essential materials for construction, furniture manufacturing, flooring, wall and ceiling cladding, and the production of household and decorative items. However, the technical performance of these plywood panels is not always sufficient for demanding tasks. When a material resistant to water or fire is required, waterproof or fire-rated okoume plywood is the solution. Let us examine what enables these sheets to perform in extreme conditions.

## Okoume wood (okoume)

Okoume (Aucoumea klaineana) is a hardwood species native to Central Africa. One of the region’s primary commercial timbers, it is known under trade names such as okoume, gabon, and gaboon mahogany. The latter name can be misleading, as it suggests the mahogany family. Botanically, the tree is not a true mahogany. However, solid okoume wood is similar in texture to precious hardwoods, which is why it is used as a mahogany substitute.

The tree reaches heights of 30–40 m, with trunk diameters of 1–1.18 m. The colour palette ranges from pale pink to light brown. The timber may darken over time. The grain is predominantly straight, though interlocked grain also occurs. A subtle natural lustre is visible on smooth cut surfaces.

Okoume is a durable wood that withstands significant operational loads. The solid timber is resistant to moisture fluctuations and unaffected by direct contact with water. Good workability is another key advantage of this resilient hardwood. The primary applications for this African wood include the manufacture of veneer, plywood, musical instruments, and various interior joinery items.

Okoume is listed as a vulnerable species, as forest stocks have declined by 20% over recent decades due to commercial logging and natural habitat changes. To conserve the species, Gabon enacted legislation prohibiting the export of raw okoume roundwood. Only sawn timber produced from managed forestry plantations is permitted for export.

## Waterproof (marine) okoume plywood

As mentioned above, high-grade rotary-cut veneer for plywood manufacturing is produced from this African timber. Veneer sheets are laid with cross-oriented grain and bonded using waterproof adhesive. Plywood made from okoume offers the following characteristics:

1. **High water resistance.** Solid okoume features a dense structure that tolerates direct contact with fresh and salt water. These properties make the plywood panels suitable for use in demanding conditions. However, plywood components exposed to continuous water immersion must be properly finished. The panel surface should be sealed with epoxy resin, fiberglass, paint, or varnish, and all edges must be thoroughly sealed.
2. **Wear resistance.** The material withstands mechanical loads. The cross-laminated veneer structure provides high impact resistance and overall panel strength.
3. **Light weight**. The density of this exotic wood is approximately 430 kg/m³. Products made from okoume plywood are 20–50% lighter than equivalents made from alder, pine, or birch plywood.
4. **Bendability**. Okoume plywood panels bend well, making the material widely used in boatbuilding, motorboats, and yachts.

**[Waterproof okoume plywood](/product-category/fanera/fanera-morska/)** is designed for exterior use and utilised across various industries. The primary applications are outlined in the table below.

| Boatbuilding | Marine plywood is used to construct yachts, motorboats, rowboats, kayaks, and canoes. The panels can be shaped to curves and, with proper surface finishing, withstand continuous saltwater contact. Marine plywood is also used for the floors and seats of inflatable boats. |

| Cladding works | Waterproof plywood is an essential material for floor, wall, and ceiling panelling. Moisture-resistant sheet lining is used in cruise liner cabins, motorboats, and yachts, as well as in railway carriages, metro cars, and high-traffic public facilities. The panels endure heavy operational loads, provide a stable substrate for decorative finishes, reduce noise levels, and improve indoor climate. |
| Furniture and fit-outs | Moisture-resistant plywood is used to build shelving, racking, and worktops for industrial and commercial premises. Storage and utility zones are fitted out with furniture made from waterproof plywood sheets. The durable material is also used for platforms and partition walls. Movable screens allow easy spatial zoning. |
| Construction | Moisture-resistant plywood, available with delivery across Ukraine, is used in temporary and lightweight structures, as well as in building and finishing terraces, gazebos, and verandas. |

Our catalogue features marine okoume plywood:

- sheet size: 2500×1220 mm;
- thicknesses: 4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm, 20 mm.

## Fire-rated okoume plywood

Fire-retardant plywood panels share the same construction as standard plywood. The panels consist of an odd number of veneer plies bonded with heat-resistant adhesive. Additionally, the wood veneers undergo fire-retardant impregnation.

The specialised adhesive and impregnation yield flame-retardant plywood that resists open ignition, smouldering instead while emitting minimal smoke. The material provides the following properties:

1. **Fire safety.** **[Fire-rated okoume plywood](/product-category/fanera/)** helps reduce fire risks. The lack of open combustion and dense smoke increases available evacuation time in shopping malls, cinemas, cafes, hotels, and other public venues.
2. **Wear resistance**. Solid okoume timber withstands significant mechanical loads, making it suitable for furniture and interior fit-outs in residential and commercial spaces.
3. **Moisture resistance.** Okoume plywood panels offer high water resistance. Properly treated wood tolerates water contact and maintains dimensional stability under humidity changes. These laminated panels are used in demanding construction environments.

WoodWay Expert supplies fire-rated plywood in 2.5×1.22 m panel sizes and thicknesses of 15 mm, 20 mm, 12 mm, 18 mm, 10 mm, 8 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm.

Fire-retardant panels are typically used in the construction and interior finishing of industrial and public buildings. The plywood is used to clad walls in corridors and retail halls, warehouses, and offices. Fire-safe panels serve as subflooring, platforms, and ceiling cladding. Timber panels improve building safety while contributing to better acoustic insulation and microclimate. Fire-rated plywood is also used in passenger railcars, marine cabins, and interior partitions.
