# Interior and Exterior Birch Plywood: What Is the Difference

- 30 January 2024
- Categories: Guides

Plywood is distinguished by its strength and relatively low weight. Thanks to these characteristics, the material is used in construction, cladding work, furniture manufacturing, and flooring production. The technical specifications of the boards depend on thickness, wood species, and adhesive. Various plywood options are available on the joinery market, but specialists consider Interior and Exterior plywood to be the most popular. Let’s find out how these boards differ.

## What is the difference between Interior and Exterior Birch Plywood?

The main difference between Interior and Exterior sheets is the adhesive that bonds the mutually perpendicular veneer sheets. In addition, the panels may differ by wood species.

Urea-formaldehyde adhesive is used to bond veneer sheets in Interior plywood. The material is considered moisture-resistant, meaning it withstands fluctuations in humidity. With prolonged contact with water, the sheets may swell. Plywood boards are intended for interior work. **[Interior Birch Plywood](/product-category/fanera/fanera-fsf/)** is used for manufacturing cabinet furniture, subflooring underlayment, interior partitions, crates, and other packaging.

In Exterior plywood, phenol-formaldehyde adhesive is used, which bonds and impregnates the wood veneers. To improve moisture resistance, the panels are additionally treated. **[Exterior Birch Plywood](/product-category/fanera/fanera-fsf/)** is a material of increased moisture resistance. Water-resistant plywood sheets withstand short-term contact with water, so they can be used for interior and exterior work. Exterior plywood is used for facade cladding, frame structures, and trim elements for train carriages, ships, and vehicles.

When comparing plywood types by bending strength, Exterior wins: 60 MPa versus 40 MPa for Interior. Both types of board are suitable for subsequent decorative finishing. The materials can be sanded, laminated, and painted, but Interior plywood is considered more suitable for decoration.

Hardwood and softwood species are used for manufacturing plywood boards.

1. **Hardwood plywood.** This category includes material made from okoume, poplar, ceiba, alder, and birch. Poplar or alder plywood is affordable, but not suitable for all tasks. Softwood sheets are easily machined and used for manufacturing furniture and household items. Panels made of exotic species are more expensive, as their cost is influenced by complex logistics and the value of the solid timber. For example, **[water-resistant okoume plywood](/product-category/fanera/fanera-morska/)** (also called marine or boat plywood) withstands contact with fresh and salt water. The material can be used in challenging conditions and is applied in shipbuilding. **[Fire-retardant okoume plywood](/product-category/fanera/)** does not produce an open flame, but smolders with minimal smoke emission. Fire-resistant sheets are used for cladding floors, walls, and ceilings in public spaces, retail halls, and production facilities. Plywood made from ceiba veneer is lightweight and flexible. **[Lightweight ceiba plywood](/product-category/fanera/)** is used when it is necessary to produce large yet lightweight items. When manufacturing curved parts, **[flexible ceiba plywood](/product-category/fanera/fanera-gnuchka-iz-sejby/)** is essential. The sheets bend along their length or width due to the layer arrangement: the veneer is laid so that the grain direction of adjacent plies matches. Another popular variety is **[birch plywood](/product-category/fanera/)**. Strong, wear-resistant, and easy to machine, this material is suitable for temporary structures, cabinet furniture production, and finishing work.
2. **Softwood plywood**. Pine plywood is more affordable than birch, but not as strong. Typically, pine veneer is used in the production of Exterior water-resistant plywood. Such sheets are suitable for exterior cladding, as the water-resistant properties of the adhesive are complemented by wood naturally resistant to high humidity due to its resin content.
3. **Combi plywood**. Combination plywood consists of hardwood and softwood veneers. Birch veneer is most often used for the outer layers, and pine veneer for the inner cores. Additionally, the market offers plywood with birch face veneers and a core of alternating birch and pine plies. This affordable material is sufficiently strong and solves a wide range of tasks.

## What thickness of plywood should be used for flooring?

Plywood sheets are used for floor coverings. The choice of plywood for flooring depends on the type of room. For example, for apartments in multi-story buildings, one-side sanded (S1S) or un-sanded (NS) Interior plywood is selected. For private houses or ground-floor rooms where dampness is possible, Exterior plywood is used. Boards with increased moisture resistance maintain dimensional stability under humidity fluctuations, therefore lasting significantly longer in such conditions.

When choosing the thickness of plywood for flooring, adhere to the following rule: sheet thickness should be at least 3/4 of the thickness of parquet, laminate, or other flooring installed on top. Typically, 12 mm or 15 mm thick plywood sheets are laid on floors, less commonly 10 mm or 18 mm.

Our catalogue features sheet material with specifications shown in the table below:

| Specifications | Interior Birch Plywood | Exterior Birch Plywood |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Thickness | 3 mm 4 mm 5 mm 6 mm 8 mm 10 mm 12 mm 15 mm | 4 mm 6 mm 9 mm 12 mm 15 mm 18 mm 21 mm |
| Dimensions | 1.22 x 2.44 m 1.525 x 1.525 m | 2.5 x 1.25 m 1.25 x 2.5 m |

## What load can a plywood sheet withstand?

Plywood strength depends on thickness, density, and adhesive type. The type of load—static or dynamic—is also significant.

A mixture of urea resins with formaldehyde is used in the production of Interior boards. This adhesive formulation does not provide the highest strength values, but such material is eco-friendly and safe. The strength of Interior plywood is fully sufficient for interior finishing work.

The phenol-formaldehyde adhesive used in Exterior plywood has water-repellent properties and provides excellent breaking strength.

FBS panels bonded with bakelite resins are an exceptionally strong material that solid wood cannot match. The only disadvantage of FBS structural plywood is its lack of elasticity.

Specialists give the following approximate load-bearing capacities for plywood sheets by thickness:

- 6–12 mm – up to 100 kg per square meter;
- 18 mm – about 190 kg per sq. m;
- 21 mm – 400–500 kg/sq. m (constant, static) and 200–250 kg/sq. m (temporary, dynamic).

## Which plywood is the most moisture-resistant?

When comparing Interior and Exterior boards, Exterior is more moisture-resistant due to the phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. Plywood with increased water resistance is used in construction work. The material is used for shuttering, scaffolding, and subfloor decking. It is important to understand that layered sheets are still subject to water damage upon prolonged contact. To protect the panels, their surface is coated with oils, waxes, varnish, or paint.

When it comes to the most moisture-resistant plywood, FBS panels lead this category. Bakelized plywood is produced in two stages: the first stage is impregnating the veneer with bakelite varnish, and the second is bonding under high pressure with phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives. Depending on the type of alcohol-soluble resins, plywood is categorized into FBS and FBS1. The second type has inner layers made of lower-grade veneer. The faces of FBS panels are impregnated with alcohol-soluble varnish or simply varnished.

FBS waterproof plywood is used in shipbuilding and the aviation industry. The material withstands harsh operating conditions and temperature fluctuations.
