# Figured Wood and Decorative Veneer

- 18 December 2023
- Categories: Guides

The aesthetics of natural wood are endlessly fascinating. Every trunk offers a unique color palette and grain pattern. When an atypical fiber structure is added to natural coloring and grain, the result is a truly prized material. Interlocked and wavy grain not only forms intricate decorative figures, but also influences the working and performance properties of the timber. Interlocked or undulating grain makes solid wood tougher and more wear-resistant, although processing such timber requires specialized tooling and techniques. Let us examine the types of figured wood recognized by specialists, the species in which figure occurs, what makes [decorative veneer](/product-category/eksklyuzyvnyj-shpon/) so valuable, and the products it is used for.

## What is figured wood?

Wood grain typically runs longitudinally along the trunk. In certain logs, however, wild or irregular grain occurs—a wavy, interlocked, or chaotic alignment of fibers. The wood grain deviates from a straight path. When sawing a log into timber or slicing it into veneer, any wood fiber that does not lie in the cutting plane reflects light as if emerging from the surface. This creates a three-dimensional visual effect: under specific lighting angles, a dynamic figure of curls, interlocked fibers, and wavy lines appears on the surface. It is precisely this chatoyancy and depth that fine cabinetmakers, antique restorers, and custom woodworkers prize so highly.

The exact cause of these structural variations remains a subject of debate. One theory attributes it to genetic mutations in specific trees, while another links it to environmental stresses.

## Types of Figure in Wood

Figured grain occurs in both hardwoods and softwoods. Several primary figure types found in wood are described below.

## Curl

Curl (curly figure or ripple) is a wave-like pattern that produces a rippled visual effect. Curly grain is frequently found in Maple. The term “curly” is often used as a broad descriptor for wavy wood grain, which can cause some confusion. While many figured patterns contain curls, not every figured pattern is classified strictly as curly grain.

![](/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5218126572_w640_h2048_fiddleback_medium.jpg)

## Fiddleback

The name comes from the tonewood traditionally chosen for the back plates of bowed instruments, including violins, mandolins, and acoustic guitars. To be classified as fiddleback, the spacing between curls is typically around 5 mm. The 3D pattern is tight, uniform, and generally runs perpendicular (at approximately 90 degrees) to the grain direction.

## Flame

Flame is another distinctive figure found in figured wood. The pattern resembles tongues of flame from an open fire. This material is extensively used in electric guitar manufacturing, where the pattern follows the instrument body contours naturally.

![](/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5218128207_w640_h2048_quilt_medium.jpg)

## Quilt

Quilted figure resembles rumpled, undulating fabric or a patchwork quilt. This pattern occurs most frequently in western bigleaf Maple. Highly popular among musical instrument builders, a guitar with a quilted top can cost two to three times more than a standard model.

![](/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5218128859_w640_h2048_crotch_medium.jpg)

## Crotch

Crotch figure forms where the main trunk forks into major limbs. This is an area of intense internal mechanical stress, which leads to swirling, wild grain configurations. The intersection of growth rings from the trunk and limb creates an interference pattern resembling expanding ripples in a pond.

![](/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5218129400_w640_h2048_spalt_medium.jpg)

## Spalting (spalt)

Spalting differs fundamentally from the grain patterns listed above. While the causes of natural figure are debated, spalting is definitively caused by fungi. Spalting can occur in almost any wood species, but is most commonly found in Maple. When the cut ends of a felled log are exposed to moisture, fungi enter and begin decomposing the wood. If left unchecked, the log will rot; however, if the fungi are stopped in time, they leave distinctive dark, contrasting zone lines resembling fine pen strokes. Spalted maple is usually stabilized with epoxy resin to restore structural integrity.

## Ray fleck

This is a characteristic feature of Oak. When an Oak log is quarter-sawn, medullary rays or ray flecks appear across the growth rings. They run at an angle across the primary grain lines, resembling rays of sunlight falling across the surface of the Oak Timber. The primary market for quarter-sawn figured oak is fine furniture manufacturing.

## Bird’s eye

Found across several wood species (Maple, Ash, American Beech, Yellow Birch, American (Black) Walnut). The characteristic pattern features tiny, swirling elliptical knots resembling bird eyes, clustered alongside straight wood fibers.

## Bearclaw (bearclaw**)**

Typically found only in softwoods such as Spruce. The pattern consists of pale, shimmering cross-grain ripples resembling bear claw scratches. The effect is caused by slight local interruptions in tree growth.

## Pommele

Interlocking fibers produce a dense, mottled blister figure. The wood surface appears quilted or dappled. Pommele figure is typically found in dense equatorial hardwoods such as Sapele, Rosewood, Bubinga, and Moabi.

## Decorative Veneer from Figured Wood

Timber with three-dimensional figure is a rare, high-value decorative material that cannot be cultivated on an industrial scale. Slicing figured logs into veneer maximizes the yield of these unique logs. Natural Sliced Veneer produced from figured wood makes high-end joinery more accessible. Decorative veneer is widely used by interior designers and master cabinetmakers. Custom joinery workshops use these thin sheets to craft bespoke furniture, unique Wood Wall Panels, and decorative objects (carvings, boxes, specialty items, picture frames, and marquetry panels).

Our catalogue features Natural Sliced Veneer from figured logs of various wood species. Let us examine several of them in detail.

1. [**Sycamore Maple Veneer (Riegel / Fiddleback)**](/product-category/struhanyi-shpon/)**.** The grain of decorative Maple resembles European Sycamore. Figured Maple veneer provides a smooth, silky surface. Its undulating fibers create a three-dimensional pattern reminiscent of pleated fabric. ![](/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5218253417_w640_h2048_4537161971_w640_h640_4537161971.jpg)
2. [**Pommele Sapele Veneer**](/product-category/struhanyi-shpon/). The grain of this hard African timber interlocks to produce a mottled, blistered pattern. A rich palette of pinkish-red to brown tones enhances the visual depth of the figured grain. ![](/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5218178281_w640_h2048_4536888641_w640_h640_4536888641.jpg)
3. [**Bubinga (Kevazingo) Veneer**](/product-category/eksklyuzyvnyj-shpon/). Sheets sliced from African rosewood logs frequently display distinctive figures including flame, pommele, waterfall, and quilt. ![](/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5218178953_w640_h2048_3812463274_w640_h640_3812463274.jpg)
4. **Amboyna Burl Veneer**. Due to its intricate, interlocked grain structure, Amboyna is highly valued in the fine joinery market. This surfacing material is used for luxury items: musical instruments, humidors, jewelry boxes, and decorative art. ![](/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5218183231_w640_h2048_4185251826_w640_h640_4185251826.jpg)
5. **American Walnut Burl Veneer**. The value of this material is determined both by its rich figure and the limited availability of trees native to North America. The dense, figured pattern forms in the burl—an irregular growth at the root flare of the trunk. ![](/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5218214962_w640_h2048_4188153781_w640_h640_4188153781.jpg)
