Edged sawn timber is produced from dried hardwood and softwood logs. Sawing is performed on a band saw or sawmill. Logs of specified lengths are selected for cutting. The bark and outer layer are removed from the log before the round billets are processed on woodworking machines. Kiln drying involves processing sawn timber with hot steam in specialized kilns. Timber dried this way reaches a moisture content of 8-12%. Besides boards, sawmills also produce edged beams and battens. The width of a beam does not exceed twice its thickness. Popular beam dimensions include 150×50, 100×100, 50×50, 150×150, and 40×40. Typical batten dimensions are: thickness up to 50 mm, width up to 50 mm, length 1-3 m. ## Where is edged timber used? Edged timber is utilized in various manufacturing sectors. The application depends on the grade and wood species. Typically, joinery timber is used to produce: - **flooring.** Parquet flooring is a finishing material that suits both modern and traditional interiors. The flooring consists of three layers: a base, slats (usually spruce or pine), and a top hardwood wear layer.
